House Majority Leader Tom DeLay apologized Wednesday for using overheated rhetoric on the day Terri Schiavo died, but refused to say whether he supports impeachment of the judges who ruled in her case.

At a crowded news conference in his Capitol office, DeLay addressed remarks he made in the hours after the brain-damaged Florida woman died on March 31. "I said something in an inartful way and I shouldn't have said it that way and I apologize for saying it that way," DeLay told reporters.

DeLay seemed at pains to soften, if slightly, his rhetoric of March 31, when Schiavo died despite an extraordinary political and legal effort to save her life.
"I believe in an independent judiciary. I repeat, of course I believe in an independent judiciary," DeLay said.
At the same time, he added, the Constitution gives Congress power to oversee the courts.
"We set up the courts. We can unset the courts. We have the power of the purse," DeLay said.
Asked whether he favors impeachment for any of the judges in the Schiavo case, he did not answer directly.
Instead, he referred reporters to an earlier request he made to the House Judiciary Committee to look into "judicial activism" and Schiavo's case in particular.

Why do you, of all people, want to protect Tom DeLay? You're like a case study.
I would submit that you, and the faction of 'Republicans' you represent, would do so because he is powerful. But if he were weak, you would join the rest of the piranhas in the feeding.
God bless Tom DeLay. At least his first impulse is to protect the weak, not to destroy them or callously stand aside while others with power do so.
If we could say the same for the liberal Republicans, Terri Schiavo would still be alive.
Well, I see the WPPFF crowd is back and wishing to tell us all why Terri needed to be starved to death. They think Delay has thrown them a bone, they will soon be disappointed. They sound like the crowd over at DU concerning Delay's "so-called" apology.

Apparently you didn't read or understand much. I asked why these guys get upset at being called a Nazi when they advocate Nazi beliefs, practices and policies. That's not calling someone a Nazi.
No one ever gave me an answer to that question. They just attacked, as do you.

I'll assume the poster meant "dearth." In any event, it's curious that one would think that just because a "prayer" isn't trumpeted loudly on a website, it hasn't actually been expressed to God. Or does God only receive and answer prayers via the internet these days?
They're still a little disorganized. That'll clear up when they get that order of brown shirts and red armbands in...
As for "families able to pay for it out of pocket...few and far between," all my grandparents died at home (my home) and we were not rich. I believe the families financially unable to care for a dying person are few and far between.
