More Seek Help For Marijuana Addiction

WASHINGTON - The admission rate for those who seek treatment for marijuana use nearly tripled between 1992 and 2002, according to the latest data compiled by the federal government.

The numbers released Friday reflect a growing use of marijuana in the 1990s and an increase in the potency of marijuana, said Tom Riley, a spokesman for the White House's Office of National Drug Control Policy.

"This report makes clear what people in the public health community have known for years, which is marijuana is a much more dangerous drug than many Americans realize," Riley said. "This report is a wake up call for parents that marijuana is not a soft drug. It's a much bigger part of the addiction problem than is generally understood."

The study on treatment rates was conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which estimated that 41 states experienced an increase in the number of people who sought treatment for marijuana use during the decade studied.

Speaking to political issues and candidates in churches is protected by the Constitution, until totalitarians changed it.

Funny that you would talk about "facts"

You used to make quite a habit 2-3 years back of spouting off about how marijuana grown in Hawaii was laced with mercury & that pot-smokers were soon to have all kinds of brain damage, etc as a result.

You insisted this story was "all over" the media at one time. However, when I & others would press you for just one link to such a news story you always failed to deliver.

So, ever find a link? Or are you ready to admit you made it all up?

Ummm...hate to break the news to you, but those sites are just wrong, there are no withdrawal symptoms.

There are credible reports that people do experience some withdrawl symptoms following chronic, long term heavy usage. There are also clinical reports of people suffering hallucinations from drinking copious amounts of water over a period of hours. It is a "fact" that marijuana is addictive and causese withdrawl symptoms, just as it is a "fact" that water is a hallucinogen.

If nothing else, these threads provide material for consideration of the difference between "facts" and "truth".

Nonsense, it's easier to find the audience to preach to about pot behind bars in their orange jumpsuits.

My mother was a minister for California and nearly all said they were pot addicted, mixed pot with other stuff often and then got into their various crimes.

Smart people would never get into using IMO.

I think what should be important to conservatives, is whether or not what the federal gov't did in making pot illegal was Constitutional. Otherwise, conservatives who support keeping pot illegal no matter what are no better than "end justifies the means" liberals who force their own opinions on others via the courts.

Long-term marijuana use can lead to addiction for some people

Ummm...note the bolded word...if you are trying to prove a point, you just failed.

It was supposedly (*cough*) because there is such high mercury concentrations in the Hawaiian soil that it seeps into the home-grown marijuana.

Well that explains my addiction to pineapples.

You have quite a fetish for orange jump-suits, I've noticed.

Were you ever institutionalized, apart from public school?

Many people I know insist weed isn't addictive. Perhaps not in the way cocaine or cigarettes are. However, why can't potheads quit smoking it, if its not addictive?

After 22 years of indulgence, On October, 4 2002 my then 5 year old daughter told me I smelled funny after I returned from a trip to the garage. That's all it took. Haven't touched it since. No treatment. No withdrawals. Only some minor cravings in social situations, like fishing, where it used to be a big part of the activity. People just need a good enough reason to quit. Growing children are often that reason.

Your claim was that mercury was affecting Hawaii-grown marijuana & that would cause all kinds of horrible physical problems for those who smoked it.

You claimed it was a story that "all over the news".

Yet, the link you provided does not address those issues whatsoever. It's about the potency of Hawaiian marijuana. No mention of mercury, brain damage, etc.

There are over 60 cannabinoids (poisons) found in marijuana. The worst cannabinoid is tetrahydrocannabinol, (THC), a good spelling word. Let's break the word down. ``Tetra" means ``four" or having four parts; ``hydro" means water; and ``cannabinol" is the poison from the cannabis (hemp) plant.

After you smoke marijuana, you are high for a only a few hours. But chemical traces of marijuana stay in your body for a month or more. THC likes fatty organs best. One very fatty organ is your brain. Your brain is 1/3 fat! Tow other fatty areas are the testicles and ovaries. THC is stored in these organs. Frequent use of marijuana is linked to decreased sperm count and sperm movement in men, and irregular ovulation and menstrual cycles in women. THC can cause pregnancy complications and birth defects.

There was an article and story from years ago that there was high levels of mercury in some pot being grown in Hawaii. Didn't say ALL pot, but it did say the pot was laced with Mercury and could easily have been distributed to anyone.

Must be a 4 year old story by this time. Good luck finding the article.

Don't underestimate the emotional attachment some people have to the subject. Some self described "conservatives" will defend the New Deal to justify the government's actions, and willingly hand over the means to the liberals just to have a little piece of it for their own use.

You are referring to 4-5 year old story, good luck finding it on the web, we can't even easily find 4-5 year stories on FR, much less the web.

Gee thanks professor. Were you addicted? You claim to know so much about this topic and you have the passion of an ex-alcoholic? Like I said, why do you care so intensely?

I really think you should give this one up as I don't think you have the first-hand knowledge that would better serve your credibility. Instead you just keep regurgitating fear mongering "half-truths" and non-truths.
