Search Suspended For Fla. Girl (Jessica Lunsford)
Fox News ^ | March 1, 2005 | AP

HOMOSASSA, Fla. — The full-scale search for a missing 9-year-old girl ended its final day as law enforcement officers turned to child abduction experts for help.

Investigators and hundreds of volunteer searchers have uncovered little evidence during five days of scouring the rural area where Jessica Lunsford disappeared, and the full-scale search was suspended Monday afternoon.

"To continue this, we would be spinning our wheels," said Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy.

Instead, law enforcement officers were turning to 20 experts from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to help crack the case. They planned to focus on a three-quarter mile radius area around Jessica's home.

Jessica's father described the change as a second phase of the investigation. After making a plea for her safe return while choking back tears, he expressed confidence that his daughter would come home.

"Just drop her off. I'll come get her," Mark Lunsford answered when asked what he would say to whoever had Jessica. "I know whoever has got Jessie, they have to have a heart."

He also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support. "It's been overwhelming, the people that have shown up," he said. "It makes me feel real good to know everyone's trying to help me out."

Lunsford said he remains convinced that his daughter did not leave home voluntarily even though authorities have uncovered no evidence she was abducted. He said it's unlikely Jessica was lured away.

"She just didn't go with strangers," Lunsford said. He said authorities also are looking for a stuffed purple dolphin missing from his daughter's room.

Yes, Cherry. It is all just so sad. I just want to wrap my arms around Jessica's father. He and his pain just go right to the center of my heart. You make some very good points in your post, Cherry. And it's just a shame that what you have observed is ofttimes the case. The family needs all the prayers humanly possible.

I am like many of you and feel someone very close to the residence has the answer.

I have alot of un-answered questions.

The children that Jessica plays with frequently are the ones who know her better then anyone.Children will tell ALL to their playmates. So that leaves me with some questions. The 10 year old boy and his sister Tiffany and the OTHER cousin who talked of the 4 of them forming a band together. I feel like those kids are very close ....(The 2 girls went to church together ) It is not unheard of for children to SNEAK out at night! I'm not saying this happened ,but it is certainly a possibility ! I do not want to point finger's ,but in the best interest of Jessica ,does it matter? Which is why I have to ask ....is there any possibility that the 10 year old brother ( Ricky Powalish) and the 9 year old girl had a crush on one another ? They were wanting to form a band etcetera....... The possibilities here are endless ..perhaps something in that direction may be beneficial and again I am not accusing ,but feel NOTHING should be left out !

This is the quickest end to a search for a missing child I've ever seen.

The evil perps that are nobody's get caught. Not the ones politically, socially, financially, professionally well connected IMO.

I have seen some dark dark days as a child......I have never trusted anyone except God as an adult, and my son and dogs.

Dot to dot creeps prey on kids who have no one watching out for them.

If Jessica was yanked out of her bed in the middle of the night, wouldn't she yell and scream?

Not if she knew the person. Not if a hand was over her mouth. Not if she was still asleep or very groggy and disoriented and whispers were calming her.

Also, the dog didn't bark.

Think it was the grandmother that said the dog liked to curl up under the bed covers or something. Might not have heard anything to bark at.

The grandparents were close by.

They didn't hear her alarm clock either, so why would they hear someone that was trying to be quiet?

It had to be someone she knew, who let her take her doll.

It wasn't a doll. It was a stuffed dolphin.

The alarm clock bothers me. The father hears it when he gets home but doesn't check on Jessica and ask her to turn it off.... ? the grandparents didn't hear it...... ? This was supposed to be a school day. Jessica would need to get up to get ready for school, so why not make sure she was getting up since the alarm was going and not being turned off???

Cherry you are right. When I first saw him on TV I knew that immediately the people would judge him based on his appearance. Yes, he looks "rough" but I suspect he is not sleeping, eating, and is tirelessly looking for and crying about his daughter. Who wouldn't look terrible?

Then, he is not well-spoken, but his heart speaks, and it speaks volumes about his care and concern and love for his daughter. Who cares if he is a "'dis" and "'dose" type talker? I know plenty of eloquent speakers who don't give a hoot about their children

Oh, and a whole lot of people, even "intellectuals" watch Nascar races. LOL

Thanks. I was wondering about that. Dead prostitute found floating in the lake ... serial killer? Wonder if they'll ever make an arrest or even bother to investigate this.

Hello Howlin.

"To continue this, we would be spinning our wheels," said Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy.

That's the end of that, I guess...

At which case (since Dad did not come home until morning, and was hearing her alarm going off) the abduction would have been before Dad got in.

So he says. Anyone see him enter the home? What time did he get home? When he got ome and heard his daughter's alarm clock ringing, why didn't he go make sure that she was getting up and getting ready for school and turn off the alarm so that it would wake the rest of the people in the house?

I don't if the media has delved into her mother's life and what led to her living with her father.

Sorry to hear how your childhood went. Did you ever find your grandmother or mother?

The grandfather has taken a voice stress test and reportedly passed.

Here's a recent article that *claims* he passed a lie detector but I have no idea of the news channel's reliability--oh, I see it's the AP posted on their site:

Child abduction experts get involved in Lunsford case

HOMOSASSA, Fla. Child abduction experts are getting involved in the search for Jessica Lunsford. She's the nine-year-old Florida girl who vanished from her home almost a week ago.

Law enforcement officers are turning to 20 people from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to help crack the case. They will focus on a three-quarter mile radius area around the girl's home.

The full-scale search was suspended yesterday. Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy says to continue it "would be spinning our wheels"

Authorities have uncovered no evidence the girl was abducted but her father says he's convinced she didn't leave voluntarily.

The girl's father and grandfather have passed lie-detector tests.

It's increased with the surging illegal immigrants. Nobody reports an illegal missing, and nobody claims the body. The body we never identified was, we believe an illegal who simply drowned, although we can't be sure. We believe the illegal simply drowned, as there were no signs of violence, and his clothing was removed, indicating a probable midnight swim. I never saw the toxicology reports, so I suppose he could have died of a drug overdose and others threw him in or something similar. The other had been reported missing five years earlier. She was in the back of a car (nothing left but bones and crawdads), and she was identified by the license tag on her car. The police force had a suspect, but did not want to bring charges without a body. The criminal had given clues of her whereabouts in questioning five years earlier, and was in prison on an unrelated charge when we found the body. They held the charges, and figured they'd not worry about the expense of a trial until and unless he was close to the end of his current sentence.

During our first training dive at one particular walk bridge, we found a Harley Davidson, about 200 blasting caps, a safe, a shotgun, and six or seven handguns. This was in Austin, TX. I hate to think what the rivers and harbors around NY hide.

I agree with you...

We have no clue as to what went on between the mother and the father. More often than we care to admit, the hurt of a marriage gone bad clouds the judgement of both parties as far as the kids concerned. The kids become pawns and many times the parents do not realize it.

It is human nature.....It is something I am sure all broken families must have to deal with. It does not make either one of them more of a suspect than anyone else. It makes them human.

The important thing is that Mom and Dad sat together last night pleading for Jessica. It may not be easy and it may have been strained, but they did it. When Jessica returns home I think they will realize Jessica needs both of them in her life.

Every one of us has acted selfishly in our lives at one time or another and sadly, it sometimes takes a tragedy like this to realize the one who suffers most are the ones who are the most innocent.

Jessica's room is the way she left is, with the addition of cards and photos on her bed.

On Greta's show last night, the father said that the grandfather had NOT taken the lie detector test and was scheduled to take it either today or tomorrow.
