SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) A woman accused of digging up and taking her boyfriend's cremated remains more than a decade ago and drinking the beer that was buried with them was sentenced to 60 days in jail Monday, a prosecutor said.
Karen Stolzmann, 44, was sentenced on a misdemeanor charge of possession of stolen property, Sheboygan County District Attorney Joe DeCecco said. She had faced up to nine months in jail on the charge, and DeCecco had recommended a six-month sentence.
``I kind of thought she should be punished more,'' he said. ``Under these kinds of circumstances, this is just unexcusable.''
Investigators accused Stolzmann of digging up the ashes of her former boyfriend Michael Hendrickson at a Columbia County cemetery possibly out of spite for his family.
Hendrickson was 27 when he died in 1992 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His relatives contacted authorities last fall after finding out his remains were stolen.
An exhumation discovered Hendrickson's cremated remains were missing from the Cambria Cemetery. Beer and cigarettes buried with him also were missing.
Investigators were led to Stolzmann, who had lived with Hendrickson and was with him when he shot himself. Both were married to other people at the time.
Detectives searched Stolzmann's Sheboygan home, found her hiding in the shower and located the remains in her garage, authorities said.
Circuit Judge Terence Bourke also ordered Stolzmann to pay restitution for metal plaques missing from Hendrickson's grave site, DeCecco said.

Tell your friend he was mistaken about the anticipated value of the beer. I don't know what full ones are worth, but I just saw an empty six pack for 99 cents on eBay. Here's what I found on a collector's site (http://www.larwoodlimited.com/welcome.htm):
Is Larwood Limited interested in any old beer can?
Unfortunately, No. As a general rule, any cone top or flat top in excellent condition may be of interest to Larwood Limited. Tab tops, on the other hand, are more questionable. There are several varieties of tab tops that due to their desirability are valuable. Those include James Bond's 007, Playmate and Soul. Others, due to a lack of rarity are not of interest. Those include Billy Beer, JR Beer and MASH Beer.
