Federal Agents Discover Illegal Tunnel at Mexican Border
Published: Feb 25, 2005 CALEXICO, Calif. (AP) - Federal agents on Friday discovered a clandestine tunnel that may have been built to smuggle drugs and possibly people from Mexico to the United States.
The tunnel was found on the U.S. side of the border fence in Calexico, about 120 miles east of San Diego, said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It was about 20 feet underground, measuring 3 feet in diameter and reinforced with wood and plastic. Agents found rubber tubing possibly intended for ventilation.
U.S. and Mexican authorities had not determined where the tunnel originated and ended - or even if it was completed, said Mack.
Federal authorities have discovered at least 12 tunnels along the U.S.-Mexico border since Sept. 11, 2001, some of them only partially completed, Mack said.
The latest discovery was made using surveying tools that Mack declined to explain in detail.
Last year, Homeland Security began using technology developed by geophysicists to pinpoint suspicious terrain. Previously, it relied on human intelligence and sheer luck, such as when a Border Patrol agent in Calexico struck a sink hole in 2003.

WHAT in the world does you incoherent rant have to do with defending the US Border from invasion?
I'm not going to accuse CJ of being a member, but there really is an honest-to-God Open Borders Lobby out there. Mayor Borane of Douglas and Cochise County Supervisor Newman (I'll post that one shortly) are vocal members. Why they want to let the third world in to our country unchecked, I'll never know.
But CJ's comment ("Just those who advocate committing mass murder against unarmed women and children.") is a parrot of the rhetoric posed by the real OBL to shame the other side - you and me - into thinking we're wrong. He knows it. You and I know it.
And secretly, within my heart, I think he's trying to get us to make the kind of mistake that gets us banned. That way, he wins the debate. And my neighbors continue to die. He doesn't care about that, though. He just gets to win the debate. All Fame and Glory to the winner of the debate.
As I said, that's just my humble opinion. And, for what it's worth, I really detest people who'd rather win at the keyboard then save the lives of innocents.

Values based reasons for actions are good and laudable and exist. That doesn't mean that material-based reasons don't exist.
As a matter of fact, that thread probably exhibits both the values and the material needs of a public official.
I speak for myself.
This issue is personal for me. I have to live with it.
OBTW - now that I've had a moment to reflect - that's a really snide comment. But I don't really care because I wouldn't make the mistake of thinking of 'my side' as being monolithic.
