Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net
The Conservative Voice ^ | Feb 11, 2005 | by William Gheen, President, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC

Posted on 02/11/2005 10:55:36 AM PST by Jim Robinson

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. The unfortunate part though is that there are those here who would attack it as Racist, Xenophobic, Ethnocentric or any one of another derogatory 'Nasty' words they love to use to marginalize the debate.

IMO That kind of behavior and the apparent tolerance of it on FR while, at the same time, appearing to silence other voices is the spark to this whole Immigration imbroglio

Oh sheesh, the "cyber-martyr" rhetoric in full bloom, how charles rangel.

RE: "And trying to get these people doing honest hard working jobs above ground isn't pushing illegal immigration, but trying to bring sanity to a system that has been out of whack for 40 years."

You are responding to a response to my post. In that post I asked, "are Americans going to be asked if they want those jobs the undocumented workers have held for years? I thought Americans had to be asked first then the search for 'willing workers' began."

Here I was referring to the "guest worker" plan that promises that Americans will be asked first before the ILLEGAL immigrant-cum-guest worker can be legally hired under the plan.

The "guest worker" plan may be fine (though unnecessary in my opinion) for temporary work but what about undocumented workers who have careers? Would you have the "guest worker" plan renege on the promise to ask Americans first?

Your lame attempt to change the subject matter does not distract from the fact that, as opposed to the (European) immigrants you spoke in post 2737, the majority of third-worlders now in America have no intention of assimilating into our culture

Whatever, say that to the face of Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida or Rep. Bonilla of Texas.

You don't have the cajones, IMO.

Just to bring it to the attention of those who may be ignorant of the reality that the anti-illegal immigration stance is the *majority* opinion whereas the pro-amnesty stance is the piddling minority opinion among conservatives:

Spot on.

When the message and messenger of the truth is demonized, it's clear the last line of "defense" from the opposition is overrun.

Who usually engages in this style of attacking the truth? Barabra Boxer, Al Sharpton -- in short, the Left.

None of the usual Malkinbots will be able to meet that challenge. They are lying, but sadly, I fear that their lies are carrying the issue.

Hysteria, fear, and lying have trumped reasonable debate on the issue.

Not to mention blanket statements such as the one you made above. Unless you're seriously suggesting that those advance reasonable debate.

Note that I've been saying that the majority of third-worlders are against cultural assimilation, not all. ....and I wouldn't hesititate to tell Bonilla to his face (whom I presume is in the minority on this matter).

"where people actually die attending soccer matches"

At least people from south of the border only murder their own players for losing a match. Yea, that's the ticket--that's why we want all of these non-assimilated people here.

Dude my parent was a first generation immigrant and my parent told me that they were called derogatory names and were disliked.

one of FR's dirty little secrets is that a lot of you race baiters and open borders types have your own little axe to grind don't you Dane?

you're still angry over mom and dad's tribulations and you want us to pay for it.

you ought to be grateful you're here cause they made the right move and stop your resentment and calls for destroying the culture that founded us.

Can you name one nation on earth that would allow the massive immigration you and your posse howl for on this forum? Name one.

None of the scores of countries I've lived or worked or visited in would wish this...none. Wars are usually fought over what you are trumpeting.

Kool Aid drinking ingrate. Lets' just open the doors to everybody from everywhere...we will go from 300 million to a couple of billion in a decade or so and places like Haiti or Sierra Leone will be vacant but you will be happy because you have seen the destruction of the existing culture here which you despise. Spit it out Dane...vent for all of us. Let us feel your pain about feeling like you are a "minority" or whatever you think you are. We owe you right?

"The MAJORITY of third-worlders now in America have no intention of assimilating into our culture."

"Whatever, say that to the face of Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida or Rep. Bonilla of Texas."

You mean the same Senator Martinez who addressed the U.S. Senate en Espanol?

And btw, how's your reading comprehension? That's "M-A-J-O-R-I-T-Y."

Having you been in South Florida or Southern California recently?

The U.S. government AND academia have indeed been encouraging a Balkinized culture for years now -- and that's what we're getting.
