Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net
The Conservative Voice ^ | Feb 11, 2005 | by William Gheen, President, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC

Posted on 02/11/2005 10:55:36 AM PST by Jim Robinson

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

I don't believe in your solution ray, you don't have the answer, but contrary to your claims, and the claims of others like you, that does not mean that I approve of illegal immigration.

Closing the border is only part of the solution. Since you never even acknowledge this - simple reason and logic say you must be for an "unprotected", "open", "porous" (use whaever euphamism you choose) border. It's simple reason and logic. Real simple.

I am for our federal govt. and the Bush administration proving they are serious about immigration reform by enforcing the existing laws first and then we can go from there. Until then, no matter what program or law that is enacted, can't be taken seriously. Show me that Bush is serious about the sovereignty of this nation and I will listen. So far it's "come one, come all" and then will see what we can do about the resulting mess.

Maybe I'm missing something --- I saw the "actions speak louder than words" --- which doesn't go to the personal attack category. I don't think it does --- but we can just stop it all here and not take this lower and lower until people get banned. Really I hate to see people have to be banned or suspended --- and it's never me hitting the abuse button on anyone.

Now it's heading to the personal insults category.

It's all part of their MO.

Our founding fathers saw the reality of the inefficiency of the Crown ruling a nation from across the ocean; they saw the world as it was, and changed it.

And many of us Freepers see the reality of what illegal immigration is doing to our country and vow to do something to change it.

Also, "inefficiency" was not at the top of our Founding Fathers' list of reasons to depart from the crown.

The only way to prevent illegal border crossings is to remove the incentive for doing that.

I agree. That is what makes Dubya's worker amnesty plan so unpalatable, no matter what sugar-coated euphemism he chooses to call it. Those employers who aid and abet illegal immigration should be held accountable and severely penalized. THAT will remove the financial incentive for illegal immigration.

Nice post, thank you. I see quite a bit of activity going on against FR and its members. I guess FR has become a threat to our political adversaries... you know - the ones who demand tolerance.

Am not that old...just my observations. Those you mentioned were legal immigrants...if you are fan of the current situation, are you working to change current immigration laws to allow this level of inflow?

Forest fires destroy homes, kill animals and humans, and generally cost lots of money.

They also help regenerate the forest by generating nutrients and clearing out the underbrush that chokes off new growth.

Flood destroy property, kill animals and people, and generate millions of dollars in personal and property damages, they also pull up nutrients that revitalize the land for harvesting.

Does the fact that I understand the positive aspects of forest fires and floods mean that I approve of forest fores and floods?

Does the ability to see both sides on an issue mean that you are in favor of one of those two sides?

Or does the inability (or unwillingness) to see all sides mean that you are prejudiced one way?

businesses from relocating or outsourcing

You won't find me complaining about outsourcing on this forum.

What's wrong with Mexicans growing tomatoes and such in Mexico and then importing it to us? I have no problem with that situation whatsoever.

I do have a problem with illegal immigration and ills it brings to our country.

That's right...they didn't see the King as "just", or "benevolent", or as anything other than what he was...an unjust ruler.

They saw things as they were, and they took action.

They were effective people as described in my tagline.

How are employers supposed to verify citizenship when conservatives are demanding the right to not furnish evidence of it?

It's not what I want, it's just trying to encourage an atmosphere of friendly discussion. You can disagree with me and I can disagree with you, but I will not call your opinion asinine. Isn't it akin to calling someone's thought "stupid?" I really don't like the way some posts contain hostility. Aren't FReepers on the same team?

I saw the "actions speak louder than words" --- which doesn't go to the personal attack category.

Your right, it's not a personal attack, it's an observation. Unfortunately, with these folks, if you disagree with them, they seem to construe that to a personal attack, which is fine with me, because it just proves my point about them.

Maybe one day they will follow their own advice and we can have a civil debate about the problem. Until then, I’ll just ignore them.

BTW, I’m quite sure I’ll be attacked for that last part.
