President Bush cannot push his guest-worker program for illegal immigrants and new foreign workers and still win reforms to Social Security or the tax code, congressional opponents said yesterday.
"There are a lot of ambitious plans, a lot of necessary reforms that need to take place, but this rush toward amnesty-light should not be one of the priorities," said Rep. J.D. Hayworth, Arizona Republican, who called himself a friend and political ally of the president, but said Mr. Bush's immigration proposal would hurt his broader legislative agenda.

"And then you come to the rank-and-file guys," Mr. Hayworth said, "who, on nine out of 10 items agree with the administration, this is the 10th item. And now, if it goes to number one on the priority list, it is the item where there will be serious debate and discussion and ultimately rejection of this initiative."
I just can't figure out Bush's logic on this whole issue. It's so out of phase with everything else he's doing.
Reforms to Social Security and the tax code have just been put in the backroom. Open borders and green card amnesty are his priorities.
Smart move.
Well, I'm not that pessimistic. In a perfect world, we would get an SS opt-out law, the FairTax, and real border control. I think instead we'll get a somewhat watered down version of the economic laws, and hopefully at least gridlock on the borders.
Who is the head of the open border lobby? What ties does the group have? Where did their contributions go during the election cycle?
Once you answer these questions, you will know what is going on with the issue.
Follow the money.
Okay, spell it out.
I've heard lots of theories, what's yours?
As long as Gorge Bush pushes to give citizenship to 20 million illegals, he is going to need a new plan for Social Security plus a tax increase of major proportions in order to take care of these people.
The Republicans would do better to force a change on open borders. Send illegals back and close the borders. Many problems would be solved by doing that.
Shouldn't be hard. 25% of them are already in prison.

It's personal for Bush, the public and constitution be damned.
It seems to me that Social Security reforms and any "guest worker" program go hand in hand, since guest workers will probably be eligible to collect SS.
...Which will further bankrupt the system.
For Indonesian Tsunami relief, that is.
I have no problem with flying millions of low-wage sub-literate "workers" to Southeast Asia, to work at rebuilding that area.
Of course, there really won't be any reason to bring them back, 'cuz once they've built the place up again, they'll want to stay, right?
Win-Win for everyone.
Is that 24 billion just federal assistance or does it include all the states assistance as well?
I like you're thinking.
It's really *stupid*, and I can't emphasize that enough, of President Bush to push his amnesty for illegals proposal when issues like reforming SS and cutting taxes and spending in general are far more important and actually beneficial to our nation.
Bankrupting the system appears to be the goal.
Gompers, Samuel - (founder and pres. of AFL, an immigrant)
"America must not be overwhelmed. Every effort to enact immigration legislation must expect to meet a number of hostile forces and, in particular, two hostile forces of considerable strength. One of these is composed of corporation employers who desire to employ physical strength (broad backs) at the lowest possible wage and who prefer a rapidly revolving labor supply at low wages to a regular supply of American wage earners at fair wages. The other is composed of racial groups in the United States who oppose all restrictive legislation because they want the doors left open for an influx of their countrymen regardless of the menace to the people of their adopted country."

Whoops. My numbers were off a couple billion ( cost for govt assistance for illegal aliens)
Can anyone post this google cached article in it's current page?

From that article in the Washington Times:
"In August, a similar study by the Center for Immigration Studies in Washington, said U.S. households headed by illegal aliens used $26.3 billion in government services during 2002, but paid $16 billion in taxes, an annual cost to taxpayers of $10 billion."
