Immigration plan discouraged by GOP lawmakers

President Bush cannot push his guest-worker program for illegal immigrants and new foreign workers and still win reforms to Social Security or the tax code, congressional opponents said yesterday.

"There are a lot of ambitious plans, a lot of necessary reforms that need to take place, but this rush toward amnesty-light should not be one of the priorities," said Rep. J.D. Hayworth, Arizona Republican, who called himself a friend and political ally of the president, but said Mr. Bush's immigration proposal would hurt his broader legislative agenda.

Fiscal logic is not a known trait with todays legislators. They give away or spend us into a deep hole and then say we need to cut services......to those who have assets that show they could pay for those services.

>"Is that 24 billion just federal assistance or does it include all the states assistance as well? "<

-I'm not sure. See if you can decipher the article...The article does say that California alone spends 1.7 Billion in health care for illegals, so maybe state spending is in addition?

Either state spending is in addition to that or that number is just the states spending totaled up.

I shudder to think what the TRUE (total) cost is in terms of not only federal and state government assistance but criminal costs, etc.

there does not seem to be any logic to current immigration policy. Other than...vote pandering to Hispanic immigrants?

I know that's what drives the Rats immigration policy, but it appears that many on the Republican side of the isle is on board with that program as well.

Well, here's another stat: $400,000,000 per year to educate 900,000 children of illegal immigrants:

"The more you learn about illegal immigration, the less you should like it. Chances are you never cared much for it in the first place.

The Migrant Education Program gives you 897,000 more reasons to be disgusted by the stealth invasion from Mexico.

Taxpayers paid $393,600,000 last year to educate many of the roughly 900,000 eligible offspring of migrant workers in America. All of whom could be in this country illegally."

Hoorah for J. D. Hayworth and other congressmen who put principle over party on the immigration issue. On this issue, the president deserves to be opposed tooth and nail. It's high time the president look out for the interests of the majority of Americans (rather than Vicente Fox and employers looking for bottom-of-the-rung laborers), enforce the laws, halt illegal immigration, and sharply reduce our insane LEGAL immigration policies. Kudos Mr. Hayworth et al.; shame on you, Mr. President.

Illegals contribute approximately (guesstimate) 14 billion in tax revenue.

It's also estimated that the U.S. loses well over $20B (as I seem to recall, it may actually be higher) a year (and growing) in uncollected taxes due to the underground "black market" economy associated with illegal immigration of all stripes.

One of these is composed of corporation employers who desire to employ physical strength (broad backs) at the lowest possible wage and who prefer a rapidly revolving labor supply at low wages to a regular supply of American wage earners at fair wages.

This is true, and the greedy thieves have George Bush in their back pocket. It has only been within the last 60 years that Americans have, on the whole, earned a living wage, pensions benefits and health care. The greedy corporations and business people are ecstatic that now they have a President who will send us back to the 1930s in low wages and no benefits.

The other is composed of racial groups in the United States who oppose all restrictive legislation because they want the doors left open for an influx of their countrymen regardless of the menace to the people of their adopted country." (Letter to Congress, March 19, 1924)

This is probably the hardest one to fight against. Each day brings more invaders across the US border. Each day they become more of a political hazard, as they will eventually outvote American citizens. We have lost our country, thanks to George Bush and his love of open borders and slave labor.

It's personal for Bush, the public and constitution be damned.

You got that right. Bush owns the ball and we are playing in his yard so we have to go by his rules. He is like a little spoiled kid.

We haven't lost it yet but we are teetering on the brink of losing it.

Keep hounding your representatives about these guest worker programs and amnesty. Get the word out to all your friends about what is going on. I have found some real captive audiences when I explain the facts to them. The fat lady ain't sung yet. Hang tough!!

The fat lady ain't sung yet.

:-) But her mouth is wide open and her tongue is getting in gear. Just read e-mail from Ton Tancredo. He states that Bush is determined to give millions of illegals green cards and later citizenship.

You don't hear many Freepers who are worried about this mass invasion of an unfriendly country, do you? Wonder why? Guess it is fear of being ostracized from FR. In a few years we're all going to be ostracized by the Mexicans. So get used to it early on, I say.

I just heard on Dobbs that Duncan Hunter took a "group" of other congressmen on a tour of the border. They're getting serious about this. There's a new poll up as well.

http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/lou.dobbs.tonight/

Do you believe legalizing illegal workers will take pressure off U.S. borders, as President Bush suggests?

Yes 4%

No 96%

No, they spend non-recurring income and then when things get tight say we could never do without the income transfers that were wrong in the first place.

"I just can't figure out Bush's logic on this whole issue. It's so out of phase with everything else he's doing. "

You are confused because you are reading things into the article that aren't there. For example, the fact that Tom Delay opposes amnesty doesn't mean that he opposes a guest worker plan. Tom will be one of the leaders in getting the President's plan passed.

The U.S. economy is dependendent upon immigrant employees. The US population only grew 1% last year, including both legal and illegal immigrants. Without immigrants we would be losing population. Already some areas are experiencing a labor shortage.

I am a big supporter of Tom Tancredo and I have been speaking out about the invasion from south of the border for years. Bush is going to get a lot of heat from the house republicans about his guest worker/amnesty insanity. I think he is going to have to back off. If he doesn't he could do a lot of damage to the party. Not to mention the conservative base.

"Open borders and green card amnesty are his priorities. "

That's false. Those are two lies that you continue to repeat.

President Bush does not have an open border policy. To say he does is a blatant lie. There is no other word to describe it but a lie.

President Bush has not proposed an amnesty. His guest worker program does not automatically apply to any illegal immigrant in the US. Just because a person is allowed to apply for a new immigrant program does not mean that he is being granted amnesty for anything.
