Immigration plan discouraged by GOP lawmakers
washington times ^ | January 13, 2005 | Stephen Dinan

President Bush cannot push his guest-worker program for illegal immigrants and new foreign workers and still win reforms to Social Security or the tax code, congressional opponents said yesterday.

"There are a lot of ambitious plans, a lot of necessary reforms that need to take place, but this rush toward amnesty-light should not be one of the priorities," said Rep. J.D. Hayworth, Arizona Republican, who called himself a friend and political ally of the president, but said Mr. Bush's immigration proposal would hurt his broader legislative agenda.

Yhen we need them from every country"

The USA accepts individuals from all over the world to become naturalized citizens. There are established quotas for each country. There is even a lottery. You will find FR threads complaining about various group auch as Hmongs, Somalis, etc.

The guest worker visas tend to focus on countries where there is a pool of qualified workers. Ag visas would be filled primarily from Mexico. Nurses and bilingual teacher visas from the Phillipines. Crew worker visas from asian countries. Technical worker visa from India.

Milliones aren't crossing the canadian border. When fixing a dam you start with the largest leak and work your way down to the smallest.

The mexican border is the largest, it gets a wall first.

"Start with the largest leak"

Wrong, you start with the biggest threat.

The number 1 terror threat from illegals is from those who entered the country on a student or tourist visa and then disappeared. They are called sleepers. The primary reason that Congress want to do immigration reform is to reallocate the money being spent to chase Mexicans around the Arisona desert to finding the sleepers. If you followed the student visa tracking fiasco, you'd be sick to your stomach.

The number 2 threat is from Canada, Canada's policies on immigration and political asylum are so lax, it is easy for a bomber to enter there. Once in the country, there is a huge muslim population within which to hide. The Millennium Bomber proves this.

The number 3 threat is the southern border, but it is not from illegals. Congress knows that the increase on border patrol over the last decade, re-enforced after 9-11 has driven up the price that coyotes charge. That price has risen so high that organized crime has taken over the human smuggling. The drug cartel with their international connections and their distribution systems in the US could easily get a terror attack squad into Mexico, across the border, and to their final destination, if the price is right. Immigration reform will eliminate this.

We're talking about stopping illegal aliens AND terrorists, and since a wall would certainly help stop sleeper terrorists from crossing the border as well there's no reason not to build it.

The only immigration reform we need is for the feds to start enforcing the laws they've been ignoring.

If President Bush wanted an amnesty, such as Reagan granted, he is the type of man who would say that he wanted an amnesty. He wouldn't lie.

When you call something other than what it is you're lying, or being disingenuous at best. Rewarding people who have broken our laws by letting them stay is amnesty, if you don't believe me look it up in the dictionary.

Wrong. The USBP and Canadian authorities apprehended a would-be bomber whose target was determined to be LAX terminal on Jan 1, 1999. My family and some friends were scheduled to have flown into LAX that very day. Indeed we did - without incident.

The Millenium Bomber was caught by accident. As he was passing thru customs he suffered a malaria relapse and began sweating profusely. The agent mistook this for nervousness and opened the car trunk. She saw it but didn't recognize it as a bomb. The bomber got scared, ran, and was apprehended.

See! They at the Northern border do more by accident than many on the Southern border can do intentionally.

There valid reasons to oppose illegal aliens. There are valid reasons to oppose naturalization of foreigners. There are valid reasons to oppose guest workers.

But, when you try to invent reasons beyond the valid reasons, you lose credibility.

Sure!!! Houston's schools have 80% of the kids being fed by the government. 80% on free breakfast and lunch programs --- that's REAL prosperity isn't it!! Only 20% have parents who can feed them?

Bingo !

Rod's idea of prosperity is he'll employ the illegals on the cheap, and the rest of us get to pay taxes to subsidize his under the table wages.

Do you believe legalizing illegal workers will take pressure off U.S. borders, as President Bush suggests?

What? We are quoting Lou Dobbs polling data on FR?

That guy is a certified financial conspiracy nut case. As are all his "protectionist" rabble that follow his every word.

Yes, I do think it would take the pressure off the border, by eliminating the reason they cross. The Bush plan would make illegal employment opportunities a historical discussion. I would not happen immediately, as the underground economy is vast, but it would happen.

"Rewarding people who have broken our laws by letting them stay is amnesty"

1. No. That is not amnesty. No one is being pardoned for past convictions. No indictments or other pending charges are being dismissed. No investigations or laws are being suspended. No grace period is created. Border jumping laws are not being repealed.

2. No one is being "rewarded" for anything. Unlike Reagan's amnesty, which allowed all those who were already here to stay here, Bush's guest worker plan requires everyone to apply, whether they are here now or never have been here. Those who qualify are given guest worker visas whether they are already here or have never been here. Those who don't qualify are not given visas and if caught here are subject to the same sanctions whether they are already here or had never previously been here.

Name one, and prove it by postings!!!!

I'm not falling for that bait, but you might want to investigate the posting history and signup dates of those you "high five" all the time because they agree with your premise.

I did and do. There are some who have been here for years, post very little and only on this subject or similar matters.

Issues like this attract strange bedfellows.

"Because a documented worker would cost him SS and taxes. Employers who hire these people screw the system at honest citizens' expense. "

There are lots of employers who are avoiding federal withholding taxes by classifying employees as "independent contractors" or by paying them cash off the books. This happens with native born citizens far more often than with illegal immigrants.

Tax avoidance is not an immigration problem, it is a tax enforcement problem.

I would definetly seal the Canadian border. We don't need Alan Thicke coming down here any time he wants.
