TEHRAN - Seven drug traffickers have been hanged publicly in a park in the south-eastern Iranian city of Zahedan, the Kayhan evening newspaper reported.
It said the men had been found guilty of involvement in international narcotics trafficking and attacks on security forces.
They were hanged in Zahedan's Laleh Park.
Zahedan, the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan province, is close to Iran's border with Afghanistan and Pakistan and on one of the main international heroin smuggling routes.
At least 94 people have been executed in Iran this year, according to reports in Iran's main newspaper.
Amnesty International has reported that at least 108 executions took place in 2003 and 113 in 2002.
Murder, armed robbery, rape, apostasy and serious drug trafficking are all punishable by death in Iran.

Seems to me it's working quite well with the traffickers.
Your article is about the users -- are you suggesting they hang them also? I mean, if they did, then you could say "it seems to be working with the users as well".
Then where are the addicts getting their heroin, from the Easter bunny?
Our resident FR Drug Warriors sound more and more like the ayatollahs every day.
I have no idea. Maybe they're crossing the border themselves to get it, who knows?
The article was about drug traffickers, not users.
But so what if there were a direct correlation between the execution of traffickers and a reduced use of heroin? Would you then support the same in the U.S.?
Nah, you'd just mumble something about "correlation does not equal causation" and slink away.
Well, you have now. You can have the rest of it too. Like when they stone your daughter to death for kissing the neighbor boy.
Welcome to the new America.

I know. You can then complain about jack-booted government thugs! Now you can complain no matter what, and I bet that makes you happy.
There is a direct correlation between killing everyone and the reduced number of homicides committed by the dead ones. I guess that deserves support.
There is a whole group of mullahs on this thread. It works everytime. Posting the word hanging and drugs in the same sentence.
well, it's a start. Do that here with rapists and murderers and that is a beginning! Ah, if only... bleeding heart liberals are too into enabling criminals rather than making it way too risky too engage in. Loosers.
There is a whole group of anarchists on this thread. It works everytime. Posting the word legalize and drugs in the same sentence.
When we start doing that here, the drug problem will disappear!

Name one.

That's DONNING, JimRed. Preview twice, post once!
It worked the same way with murder. Once they started hanging them, the murder problem disappeared. Same with all the other capital crimes.
Looser than what?
My guess is the main charge dealt with security forces attacks.
I have no idea. Maybe they're crossing the border themselves to get it, who knows?
That would be quite a drive from Tehran to the border for millions of addicts to make.
An alternative explanation might be that trafficking in heroin is a thriving business in Iran.
The article was about drug traffickers, not users.
Isn't the point of executing traffickers to reduce the number of users? How else do we measure the success of the policy?
But so what if there were a direct correlation between the execution of traffickers and a reduced use of heroin? Would you then support the same in the U.S.?
I have no problem executing major heroin trafickers.
Now, what if there were a direct correlation between lax drug laws and reduced heroin use. Would you support such a policy in the US?
Nah, you'd just mumble something about "correlation does not equal causation" and slink away.
Does robertpaulsen think correlation equals causation?
When we start doing that here, the drug problem will disappear!
What evidence can you produce that backs up your contention that this strategy will make the drug problem disappear here?
As the article from the BBC posted above (#17) illustrates, Iran has the highest proportion of heroin addicts in the world.
The effort seems ineffective at best. Possibly even counterproductive.
Apostasy(leaving Islam) is punishable by death. Mohammed said,
"Whoever changes his Islamic religion, kill him." QU'ran,Surah Vol. 9:57
