Gee, I don't know. Do you suppose NYC restaurants have had people phone in phony reservations before? Maybe they have a way of dealing with it?

They always ask for a callback number, and a chic place actually will call the day of the reservation. They also keep a tally of names and numbers that stiff them on reservations.

One way to get noticed is to make a res and then call in a day or two to apologetically cancel. This type of behavior is appreciated by owners who lose bucks holding tables for no shows.

The owner BTW was rude and thoroughly uncool, but Manhattan hot spots are and have been known for these traits. A famous story about Josephine Baker, Walter Winchell, and 21 tells a lot about NYC chic.
