Let the debates begin.
Former Presidential hopeful Dr. Alan Keyes has told Illinois Republicans that he would accept their request to take on Democrat Barack Obama in the US Senate race.
Members of the Republican State Central Committee insisted that the former radio and television commentator make the promise to run before they would give him the nod Wednesday night, sources told the Chicago Sun Times on Thursday.
The Republicans were leery of voting to give Keyes the nomination without some guarantees.
So he went back into the room and bascially said, 'If you offer, than I will accept.'
Another GOP source said that Keyes had agreed to accept the nomination but told the committee that he wanted to wait until he could publicly announce it at a 'campaign style' rally on Sunday.
'He told them that he would do it,' the source said. 'he just wanted to take a few days to put things together and make his announcement.'

You're a liar.
None of that happened.
Malicious slander is unbecoming for a FReeper.
My goodness, is that an actual quote?!? With Republicans like that who needs Democrats? lol.
"However, I do believe Keyes has already indicated to the Pub party in IL that he is running, and is waiting to announce it on Sunday to get the most play (he'll probably appear on one of the talking heads Sunday programs). Plus, if he accepts, he'll probably be buying himself a position as a speaker at the Republican convention (unless all the speaker slots are already filled); that's if the Pubs are smart and give him a platform to speak from and thus enhance his candidacy credentials for the run for senator from IL. Our answer to Obama at the Dem convention. We'll see. Hope I'm right." (My post from last night on the ever so long Keyes thread).
Looks like I was right, no pardons. By the way, where is your sidekick Howlin on this thread. Did she work her fingers to the nub trying to badrap Keyes last nite? Can't type anymore for a while? Well, now we've got Keyes, much I'm sure to your dismay. Oberweiss was no longer a viable candidate due to his making a big issue of illegal immigration in Illinois during the primary. Although I agree with him 100% on this point, it just wasn't going to fly against an opponent like Obama (himself an immigrant). The dems would have gone after him viciously. Also, Oberweiss has flip flopped on abortion, and many didn't trust his true beliefs. Perhaps he'll pop up in some other election, but not this one. Keyes is a much better matchup for Obama. Ok, now you can startup your anti-Keyes rant again on this new thread. Have fun.
No, that wasn't an actual quote. But it was an accurate summing up of her post.
Thank you, tame.
To whatever extent he was verbally brutal to the guy he was running against (Bush) - we can expect him to be brutal with Obama. I hear that politics is something of a blood sport.
G.H.W. Bush notoriously called Reagan's plan "voodoo economics" but was able to get on board. If Keyes wins here, I expect he will get on board in the Senate as well.
Unfortunately, Illinois Republicans *have* been looking foolish and desperate. Until now, that is.
Me rather think you're agenda is deeply rooted in the La Raza Unidas.
So you'd prefer conceding the Senate seat to Obama rather than putting forth our best effort to win?
Sheeeesh, no wonder I can't go along with your brand of invertebrate conservatism.
FINOs. Freepers, In Name Only.
Dr Keyes is the embodiment of the principles Free Republic values most.
"But there are those of us who are actually from Illinois who:
a) understand the actual situation on the ground, and
b) really resent the party importing an East Coaster instead of supporting a local candidate by putting their money where their mouths are."
Sorry Mr. Expert on what all Illinoisans are thinking. I'm an Illinoisan and I'm all for Keyes, and can't believe you are still ranting on about what the Pub Party in Illinois has done. What's done is done, and Keyes will be the candidate. Deal with that rather than constant prattling on how the Pub Party in Illinois done you wrong.
Obama has been running,including the primary,for what...a year? And he was a prime-time speaker in Boston.How articles have been written about him,how many news reports,how many churches has he been in,and how many get-to-gethers on the South side,etc.?
Keyes is NOT well known to the majority of people in Ill. and he's off to a VERY late start.
There is absolutely NO way that Keyes gets Chicago,Springfield,Evanston,Champaign-Urbana,Hillsdale,Glen Coe,Skokie,Lincolnwood,Wilmette,and on and on.Look at the population figures for the state.That's what I'm doing,combined with what I know of how mushy Republicans are either fence sitting or NOT going to vote for President Bush.Ill. is a VERY difficult state for GOPers this year.
I wish it were otherwise,but all of this "KEYES WILL WIN" ," KEYES WILL EASILY BEAT OBAMA IN THE DEBATES" stuff,is delusional.
that's if the Pubs are smart and give him a platform to speak from and thus enhance his candidacy credentials for the run for senator from IL.
~~~~~~
I'm sure they will and as a kenote speaker to boot.
This in conjunction with the debates and Alan has a very good chance of mantaining our majority in the senate.
I hope and pray the Party and the President won't abandon Alan.
Thanks, Tame. Did you get a chance to ping the rest of the pro-Keyes crew, from last night's thread? They'll be delighted to hear the good news.
Willie: Three whole days in FR and you KNOW me? Attaboy Luis!!! Show him what you're REALLY like!!!
That's nothing, Willie. You should see how many times the Luis keeps using the F word (with all kinds of different variations) in his e-mails to me, lol.
But...but...but....don't you know that he is the VOICE of Illinois Republicans?!?
Oh wait, in this case, the State Committee was the voice of Illinois Republicans....
Never mind!
;-)
Well said, Tomas! Can you IMAGINE being in the trenches, with some of these doom-and-gloom merchants???
Maybe, if you would have simply quit e-mailing me after beinfg asked to stop, I wouldn't have needed to use it at all.
No, I haven't. I might someday :o)
