But even at that, a race against no opponent is not as newsworthy as this race has just become.

Doubtful. He's been all over NPR and other outlets since his convention speech. He's the fair-haired comer and darling of the media. They've put much stock in his bid to become the first black senator and it was not going to fade.

We all suck it up when we have to, but this does not mean that we have to lie to ourselves in the process.

What lie? What's more important: the possiblity of seating strict constructionist judges that may overturn Roe V. Wade or saving face?

Damn the torpedos...

I haven't commented yet on the Keyes thread, but I would like to do so now.

The speech that Obama gave at the convention was outstanding. If he really means what he said, then he ought to be a Republican. He was talking mostly to centrist themes.

If he didn't really mean what he said (as some have graded him an extreme liberal) - then he could be a most dangerous politician, like Clinton - who can convince people to believe "A" while doing "B".

Enter Keyes. By many accounts (including some Democrats) - in the primary debates leading to the 2000 election, Keyes was the best debater. Just having Keyes and Obama in debate - whether in person or by articles or advertisements - will help "flesh out" who Obama really is. That's a plus no matter what else happens.

And hopefully, the debates will cause enough doubt over Obama to motivate the ones who elected the current conservative Senator - especially the people downstate.

My two cents ... FWIW

Obama is not "on the run".

Now that he has a known opponent,he's probably getting to work on how best to defeat Alan and he will.

Alan has yet to win a single election he's tried on.He is,unfortunately, a lamb to the slaughter and as a nationally know figure,of sorts,he is only going to help Obama rise.If Obama had been up against a local, more or less unknown GOPer and won,it would NOT have been the same.

You don't have any idea about the numbers, nor about politics in general.Yet you keep right on posting your delusions as though they were facts. They aren't! There are a LOT of mushy Republicans in Ill.,who are talking about not voting for President Bush;yet YOU imagine that Alan will get them to vote for him? Not in this universe.

I wish it was otherwise, but it isn't;no matter how many childish posts you make.

I am a broken glass Republican, and my loyalty to the GOP gives me the right to opine freely; I believe that this is a tactical mistake.

No, the Constitution gives you the right to opine freely. The question is, why are you, a "broken glass Republican", so adamant about promoting this particular opinion right now? The choice is already made. If your opinion ever had the smallest chance of mattering, it doesn't anymore. The choice was already made, and right now all you can do is demoralize people. More than they already were, that is.

If I lived in Illinois, I would do whatever I could do to help Keyes defeat Obama, and I woud still think that this was a tactical mistake by the GOP.

But as it is, you'll just yell "tactical mistake" at everyone who actually does whatever they can to help Keyes against Obama. Okay, posit it was a tactical mistake. It's already made; now what? There's a time for everything, and now is the time for campaigning. If you're right after all, we can do all the postmortems we want after the election.

As I said, I would support and vote for Keyes if I could, but I detest tactical mistakes, and I believe that this is one.

So, I have the right to opine, except here and now?

Is that it?

Alan has managed, over the years,to turn off his own base, but YOU think he will attract Dems in Ill.?

And Keyes would be little help in the Senate and you're only speculating;you have absolutely NO proof of what he would or would not do.If the past is prologue,he's no team player;but none of will find out this go-round.He's going to lose and lose badly.

I just keep mulling over this 'tactical mistake' argument.

It just isn't logical.

To argue this is to argue that surrender is the right course tactically.

It sounds downright French, as an argument.

Well stated. The fact is Keyes is apparently the GOP candidate, so all the carping and debating is mute. We need to get behind him a %1000.

You definately have a right to opine. I'm just amazed that you and nopardons being so adamant that Keyes will lose.

None of us know the future to that degree-do we?

Repeat it often enough-you've left no room for a possible mistake on your part that you could be slightly wrong.

How has he turned off his base? Either way, I don't think he'll do well in the senate, for the same reasons that I think Rudy Giuliani won't either. There you have two people who DO NOT play well with others, and more than that, can only be in charge and not taking orders.
