I read the article that Drudge was talking about. First it basically independently documented the monster waves reported by sailors. Secondly it began to provide insight to their formation. Leading theory is wave amplification from multiple sources. If two waves intersect they will generally cancel or build up arithmatically, so if they come in the correct frequency they could pile up into a very large, albet temporary, wave. Constructive interference is the scientific term. You encounter it alot with your radio but probably don't notice it, except for the apparent change in volume.
