ANKARA, Turkey (AP) A high-speed train derailed Thursday in northwestern Turkey, killing at least 14 people and injuring 40, the private NTV television station reported.
Four of the train's cars overturned near Pamukova in Sakarya province, the report said. The cause of the accident was not known.
CNN-Turk television said the train was traveling from Istanbul to Ankara.
"We have heard that there is a serious accident," said Deputy Governor Orhan Aydinsoy who was traveling to the area. He said hospitals had been put on alert.
Oguz Dizer, a journalist who was traveling in the area, said he saw several bodies lying near the tracks.
"The scene is one of carnage," Dizer was quoted as saying. "There are people lying all over the place."
He told NTV that soldiers had arrived on the scene to help the injured.
Fox News has upped the dead to 70. Tragic.
