Are "intlligent design" and evolution necessarily contradictory?

I think not.

Evolution is a biological mechanism. When a scientist strays beyond studying what can be determined only by scientific methods, and condemn "intlligent design", he is no longer speaking from a position of authority in his field - just rendering a personal opinion. In this case, I would view that opinion as flawed.

Who the heck does he think created the laws of biology and physics by which evolution and other processes in the universe operate?

I was all a fortuitous accident? I hardly think so.

Professor Ernst Mayr, the scientist renowned as the father of modern biology, will celebrate his 100th birthday tomorrow by leading a scathing attack on creationism.

At 100 years of age he should be reading the Bible - "cramming for finals."

intelligent design” — the latest way in which creationists have sought to present a divine origin of the world — was thoroughly refuted by Charles Darwin a century and a half ago.

8-) I think Darwin thoroughly refuted himself a century and a half ago when he said that the theory of evolution would be disproved if the fossil record did not, in the century to come, show itself to be replete with transitional forms.

The historic role of religion has been to fill in the gaps of science.

As those gaps disappear, so does the need for a Creator.

A little "handywork" from Sunday School teacher Jimmy Carter - ping.

(J.Carter FOUGHT to retain evolution teaching in public education.)

I guess this is why evolution is still a "theory".

There is no proof that evolution or creation either one ever took place.

However, I defy anyone to prove to me that a simple blade of grass just "happened" to appear one day.

If anyone can prove that beyond any reasonable doubt, then I will look seriously at whether or not an entire Universe just "Happened" to appear.

When they do this, then we can all go out and buy plastic, glass, fiberglass and metal and put them into a large bag. In oh... 20 million years or so, that stuff should morf into a Pentium computer.

"One of these, scheduled to appear later this year, will examine how “intelligent design” — the latest way in which creationists have sought to present a divine origin of the world — was thoroughly refuted by Charles Darwin a century and a half ago."

Will he also tell us how he walked 20 miles to school, barefoot, through two feet of snow?

The same people who are getting all excited about this 100 year old guy 'refuting' creationism are the same ones who would just roll their eyes at him if he were to share some other tidbit of 'wisdom.'

Evolution is a dead religion. Intelligent Design is the only rational explanation for the existence of matter. Of course, Latter Day Saints (aka Mormons) would disagree, as they believe that matter predates any of their gods. Neat trick.

Evolution is a reality. It takes nothing away from's God's divinity or role as creator everything. If God wants to use evolution to change things, who are we to say otherwise? Babies evolve from single-celled animals. Don't they?

As for the origin othe universe, it happened about 5:00 a.m. this morning, when I woke up.

His work is motivated in part by a sense of exasperation at the re-emergence of creationism in the USA, which he compares unfavourably with the widespread acceptance of evolution that he encountered while growing up in early 20th-century Germany.

For some reason I don't think pointing out the widespread acceptance of evolution in the days preceding the establishment of Nazi Germany contributes well to his thesis.

Pat Hen! I've been trying to reach you about that guy who "created" a new species of fruit fly. You remember--you posted the original thread. I've searched and searched, it's been over sixth months, and I don't believe new flies are to be found.

Yet, a scientist claimed to have "created" them.

Any news? I'll be back with a link to your "new species of fruit fly" thread as soon as I've found it.

It's all about the grants. Who cares about the truth? Here's a link to claims by one Very Famous scientist that he created a new species of fruit fly.

two daughters, five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren

Just barely squeaking by. Replenishment level is 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Does that say anything for the Doctor's species?

Suppose he is right. Suppose people evolved directly from animals and that the only thing that separates us is self-realization. Suppose he is right that there was no divine creation, then it stands to reason that he would argue that life is ultimately pointless and that upon our deaths we merely cease to exist.

If that's the case, then why would he protest creationism so forcefully? What does he care? He will soon cease to exist and at some point in the future the entire earth will dissolve into a firey ball of flame, wiping out all his efforts.

Has he not faced up to this dilema?

There is no inherent inconsistency between evolution and intelligent design. Anyone who says otherwise has an ideological chip on their shoulder.

Personally, I believe whole heartedly in Creationism. I do not have any scientific facts to back why I feel the way I do. All I have is my own observations of life. When one has a 6 year old in the house, quite often one's eyes are opened to things that never ever would have even been considered before.

I have literally watched my beautiful, intelligent and often mischievious daughter grow from conception to the point she now has grown to become. I can not figure out for the life of me, how anyone could ever believe such an idea as evolution. Oh, I know someone will post a belligerant and rude response to my post, but to me, belief in evolution takes far greater faith than to believe that a Holy God created all.

When I observe all of the tiniest details of life, especially those pointed out by my little one who quite often excitedly points these things out to me, I realize there is something far greater than a slow but sure chemical transforming of life happening. Surely, we are all held in the Palms of the Hands of a Loving and Just Creator.

Life is just too intricately detailed to have come about by evolution. We are here for a purpose, and not by a series of Chemical reactions that happened because the conditions happened to be right that one point in history literally billions of years ago.

Let the insults and belligerant remarks, fly, but my position will not change. I stand by my belief we are created by God and not a series of chemical reactions from some primordial soup billions of years ago.
