I comes up, ok, and it scans, but I can't do anything with whatever I'm scanning, including save it to file for FAXing. Or anything else.

What program is it posting to? Sounds like you have nothing that aquires the scan.
Could be you need to open some program to acquire a scan through.
A freeware drawing or photo program perhaps if you have nothing now.
