Well, how can you explain how a slide rule works if you don't understand logarithms?
Easy explanation -- adding and subtracting is easier than multiplying and dividing, particularly with five or six digit numbers.

What you said. Slide rule ... hole in the head ...? We had log tables in our science books in school. It was frightful. Did I mention I Don't Get This Stuff?

Thanks Tax-chick. I have lots of graphics hosted and a lot of vids on my homepage, too. Feel free to use them anytime. The "Grim Freepers" have been coming out of the woodwork since the debate and I'm sure many are trolls.

I'll watch for the opportunity! I've just learned to post pictures in general ... you may have noticed my green tree snake in the last 200 posts or so ... and my baby more recently.

Just pulling your chain ... I'm only a lady on Sunday, when I wear my Official Southern Church Lady Hat. Rest of the time, I'm just a redneck chick :-).
It would be nice to have a bagpipes ping list, though ... Mz Tax-chick, my origins are in the South, where I understand (and I presume) a lady is assumed to be a lady until proven otherwide. All accords to you, your disclaimers not regarded.
You think FR needs a bagpipe ping list?!?

Given the lists I'm running already.. yes. Actually, it would be fun to organize the "Pipes and Drums of Free Republic"! Hmmm....
But I need now to sign off for the night. Hm...

Wellnow!
I have been to many Scottish Games and even traced my ancestry (heathen Irish included) and have enjoyed all the forms of entertainment.
I have also sought history on all aspects of UK history, and beyond, to the Viks, the Gauls and others of lesser renown.
I can trace my ancestry back to the European Royalty (aka QEII) and far beyond.
That seems to be so far behind me that I can't relate. However, I am proud of my heritage (Scots and Gaels alike)and even the Spanish, the Egyptian and the Galilean ancestors ~~ even if I look like a "Heinz 57"

The picture I saw on Google of "Napier's Bones" looked for all the world like the charts of multiplication answers we used to use. (Some were built into pencil sharpener/pencil boxes, and in those days, the teachers didn't want you to use them.)
John Napier, 1550-1617
Lee de Forest, 1873-1961
Here's one I missed.
"Leonardo Da Vinci was a genius: painter, musician, sculptor, architect, engineer, and so on. However, his contributions to mechanical calculation remained hidden until the rediscovery of two of his notebooks in 1967."
"These notebooks, which date from sometime around the 1500s, contained drawings of a mechanical calculator, and working models of da Vinci's device have since been constructed."
