Just when exactly is that gonna happen? First we had no Whitehouse, no House, no Senate
It seems you have the patience of a gnat. The country has been on a hard and steady push to the left for DECADES, it will take us longer than 3 years to undo the enormous damage to our country.
Regardless of how long it should take in your mind, the fact is that approximately half the country falls to the right and in the GOP of our current center and the other half falls to the left and in the DNC. THAT is our political reality no matter how much we whine.

Let me get this straight. If we invite lefties to become Republicans, that will not move the party to the left?

That's the beauty of the system we inherited. We TALK to leftie voters and show them why conservative values are better than liberal ones. You might want to start by talking to that notorious lefty.. George W. Bush.
For some reason he thinks new social programs, increased federal involvement in education, budget-busting pork, an expanded NEA, and federalizing airport workers is "conservative".

You're just a troll. Posting thoughtful comments which go against the conventional is not trolling. But how are relative newbies supposed to know that?

I hate all the Bush-haters! They only post their rants, never a balance post. Never give Bush credit for trying to keep the republicans in power, recover from the Clinton recession, fighting two wars to save the Bush-hater's a$$e$. Y'all might just as well go over to DU where you would be more welcome. You need to learn the difference between a conservative news forum (FreeRepublic) and a Republican news forum (I don't know of any). Conservatives (like myself) who are more conservative than you support Bush's standings on defense and taxes, however they are disenchanted with Bush's ballooning of the federal government (Medicare, Dept Agri, Dept Ed, NEA, spend, spend, spend, $$$ for AIDS Africa). Therefore, while Bush has been betraying the ideals of conservativism, the "Bush haters" have not, instead they desire a limited (read: SMALLER) government where federal spending is REDUCED instead of increased. That is the difference between an intelligent conservative and a simple-minded, follow the leader Bushbot. Intelligent conservatives are much more in the right place at FreeRepublic as opposed to Bushbots who are lock-in-step with President Bush's liberal, vote-buying agenda.

"My first principle when voting is not to do anything that will put the worst choice in office. ""That would be an inspiring, uplifting campaign slogan"
LOL
That would be a great campaign slogan: "Vote for him, he's not so bad!"

You are not throwing your vote away; you are throwing your support to Kerry, Kennedy, Soros ... Choosing to vote for a true conservative, as opposed to President Bush is not throwing support to Kerry, Kennedy, Soros, etc. That's a pretty stupid statement.

The fact is that you have no better choice to offer.
If there was a more conservative candidate with a realistic chance to win we would all vote for him.
There isn't. So you think we should all join you in electing the most liberal candidates because you are mad.
Dream on. Logical people don't care about your tantrums.
Bye for now. See you all next time.

It seems you have the patience of a gnat. On the contrary.
I waited for decades for the GOP to make good on it's rhetoric.
But I got a rock.
The country has been on a hard and steady push to the left for DECADES,
Uhhh.. yeah... that was kinda my point.
And the GOP has held either the whitehouse, OR both houses of congress for a significant part of that time.
And rather than turn back the leftist tide, they embraced it, and propelled it forward.
If you can't see that, you're being dishonest with yourself.

The safeguard the Founders had installed to prevent the "20% from forcing it's ideals on the other 80%" (that safeguard being the Constitution itself) is now routinely ignored and superceded.Which safeguard is that, praytell? One worked fairly well in 2000 when it put Bush in the office despite Gore winning the popular vote.
We deal with the America we have NOW and work within the system we have NOW... the Founders would surely shoot us personally if we deliberately handed America over to a Democrat that wants to subjugate her once and for all to Europe and the U.N.

So what would you have us do? What is your grand strategy to change the country?
Demolition is easy, it is building up that is work.

"If there was a more conservative candidate with a realistic chance to win we would all vote for him."And there will never be a more conservative candidate if you don't demand one. You continue to not hold GWB accountable, allowing him a free pass to swing as far left as he wishes.
If the entire base of Repub's expressed complete anger and disgust with GWB, don't you think he would change course?
As long as you continue youe unconditional love, why should he change?

Well, yeah. But we didn't get rid of King George and put Robespierre in his place.
To: Constantine XIII
So what would you have us do? You might start by actually changing your OWN expectations.
Stop apologizing for leftism on the part of your party, and start criticising it.
When you cheerlead and excuse-monger for every socialist abomination that comes down the pike.. your party begins to think you actually like it.
(maybe you do)

The Founders don't need to be blamed for anything. It is the "overall political climate" of comprimise that is to be blamed. The Founders installed a system whereby the political climate would not be able to eliminate Constitutional limits on federal power, spending, and everything else. The modern political climate has, unfortunately, still found a way around the Constitution and as a result, those limits and our Constitional rights are now up for the popular vote, which was never intended (other than in the case of a Constitutional amendment.) Now that the Constitution has been thrown out the window and we are a popular democracy, voting for the (supposed) least of two evils simply brings us further down the path we don't want to go. The line must be drawn at some point, and while the results may not be initially pretty, things will have to get worse before they get better. The Republican Party must be tested to see if they are willing to actually represent Constituitonal conservatism or if power must be shifted en masse to another party that will.
Those that blindly cheerlead for Bush can do so all they want but you're not going to sway us. Bush is every bit as distasteful as Clinton or any one of the current Democratic candidates and perhaps even worse in his no-limit power grabbing and spending habits.
