Republicans in leadership positions with spines would be nice. Spines would make them more effective... So far, I'm not too impressed with Frist's leadership - at least with regards to judicial nominees. When it comes to appointments, Daschle is still running the show, it seems like, and I am deeply saddened about that...

Greater unaccountability = less spine. First you demand your politicians act according to their conscience and not political expediancy, then you demand they not act according to their conscience, but to your conscience.
You can't have it both ways. Pick the man who you think is best fit for the job and, illegal or immoral activity aside, give him your full support.
If he doesn't live up to your expectations, there's always another candidate and election right down the road.
