Earlier this week, I asked the other moderators what to do about the new names. Should I go back to being Dales, or keep my new name. It was not unanimous, but the majority felt I should keep the new name.
On the other hand, several people (not mods) have written me at the Dales account asking me to do the polling work I used to do again this campaign season. I was planning on using Dales to do it; the polling information that I track is what it is- a compilation and an analysis of what the numbers really say and mean (not what I wished they meant but rather from a mathematical point of view what they really really say). But if that is going to be controversial, that is easy enough to fix. I won't use this account either, except for finishing off this thread. It really didn't dawn on me that it would be controversial, since I know that the polling info that I do is not really a partisan activity in any way, shape or form.
As for if you could have two screen names- ask Jim, tell him why you want them and what you would do with them. If he says yes, then the mods don't have a thing to complain about.
Good! ;^)
(Do you remember the reason I would say "Good!"?)
In my opinion (and yes, opinions are like that part of the anatomy...) if it's frowned on to have more than one screen name, moderators especially should be setting the standard, not flouting it.
To me, it's a matter of integrity - we know people here not by their appearance, but by their screen names and by their posts. Posting under a different screen name is like wearing a disguise in real life - it's deceptive. I'm also a bit funny, even in 'real life', in thinking that people who enforce the rules have a responsibility to be as scrupulous in following them as they are in enforcing them.
IMHO - if the "Dales" name has been irreparably damaged by Badjoe's slanders, close the account and use the new name. If "Hugh Akston" is not going to be used again, close the account. By 'close the account', I mean "no such poster by that screen name", not just holding it for "just in case".

Sometimes it would be fun to have two screen names, but the only real reason to do so would be to say things I didn't want to take responsibility for as Amelia - to go out in disguise, so to speak. It would be deceptive and dishonest, I have no real reason to do so, and I highly doubt Jim would approve it anyway.
I was under the impression you couldn't have two screen names. At least that is what I was told when my first screen name was deleted -- after somebody raised holy hell about me having two screen names, even though I had been completely open about why I had had a different name when I first signed on here.
And how ironic it was that SHE turned out to have two screen names.
