I like Reagan's approach to the Iran-Iraq War in the 80s:
They are both our enemies. We should help the weaker one just enough to keep this going for as long as it can so that in the end, both nations are considerably weakened.
Agreed, Reagan did exactly the right thing. I doubt we can hope for anything even close to that from Obama.
It is getting hotter out there and some of the sides are kind of mixed up. The unfortunate part is that with such weak leadership in the US, things are going to get much worse.
Importantly, the way the Iranians do things is to let the hot heads spew, but with no official government backing, so that if it turns out more than they bargained for, they can disavow it, and claim that the hot heads were speaking out of turn.
In high risk brinkmanship, they will try to cover the whole gamut as insurance, so no two Iranian leaders will say the same thing.
And we’re at war with the mexican drug cartels, although you’d never know it from the news.

The evil Mullahs of iran can disavow all they want, but if there is an uptick of suicide attacks, Saudi Arabia, woun’t play by Marquis of Queensbury rules. They’ll send kill teams into Iran...They will bomb Iran right up their oil fields. And who do you think the worlds countries ally themselves with? The worls biggest Oil ptoducer? Or a country of powe mad murdering Mullahs, whose own people want to burn them to death?
So, does that extend to the Saudi-sponsored madrasa in the U.S.? I don’t plan on becoming a secondary casualty.
I think most FReepers would tell you the Eternal Vigilance is the cost of freedom.
So, is the US at war with the cartels, or the government?
The cartels are killing off the mexican govt officials who either won't be bought or won't stay bought and they are starting to come north of the border and do the same thing. It is very dangerous and thousands of people have been killed. But there is almost no press coverage of it because it would be politically incorrect and make people want to close the border.
I am not so optimistic. Remember the Iran-Iraq war? Most nations were content to let Saddam and the Mullahs butcher each other’s people for eight years. Then, just two years later, when Saddam invaded Kuwait, everything changed.
The world is a fickle place. Today, Iran’s military vastly outnumbers the Saudi and Gulf States, but Saudi has much better weaponry. As well, the Iranian people are not enthusiastic supporters of their regime.
Yet the Mullahs do have enough fanatics to have repeatedly tried to upset the Hajj, to make the Saud look like poor managers of Mecca and Medina. And many Iranians have been beheaded after trying it on, as well.
With troubles in Bahrain, the US again proved fickle enough to mostly leave, so that the Saudis could enter and put down the restive Shiites, just not in the presence of the US.
All told, it is a complex mix. One can but hope that the Iranian regime is overthrown. But even that is an irony.
As with Japan prior to WWII, the Iranians feel that they should “take their place in the Sun”. And like the Japanese, in many ways, they are ready to do so. But like the Japanese, they are going about it in entirely the wrong way.
If the Iranian people can overcome their leaders, their future could be very bright, indeed. But their leaders are what is holding them back, and could even result in their destruction.
And some government officials/employees are complicit in the drug trade.
I’m not sayin it won’t be a bloody mess, but it will be the ruination of the Iranian mullaharchy. Pit bull vs Bear, No matter how much of a bunch of sniveling backstabbers Obama the Dems are, it would be suicidal not to back Saudi Arabia.
Europe as well, knows their best bet would be to do the same. If Iran pulls their troops and Basiji from their cities to fvfight , the people will begin massacring the ones left, the Hardcore supporters, and the hardliner mullahs will be hung from cranes all around Iran. The Mullahs and their goons can barely keep their enslaved population from revolting as it is *now*.
