Writers and broadcasters friendly to the Democratic cause have already been provided talking points suggesting the war is about oil, not terrorism.

This will backfire the way that gun control backfired on the Democrats. Most Democrats drive cars (gas-guzzling SUVs?), many Democrats need heating oil in the winter. If they think that "it's only about oil," then they are saying that they can do without gasoline and heat, not that Exxon will be deprived of reserves and profits.
