Vanishing Lady

Revealing my beauty
Is what I do best
Behold every petal
A rainbow at rest

Sweet grass does surround me
My temple seems safe
But not from the cruel ones
Who may seal my fate

The wind softly caresses
My petals so fine
I once was abundant
But I'm lost now in time

I hope I will be here
For your children to see
But I need your protection
Or I'll just cease to be

Like the star,
That shines afar,
Without haste
And without rest,
Let each man wheel
with steady sway
Round the task that
rules the day
And do his best.

A blonde was bragging about her knowledge of state capitals. She proudly says, "Go ahead, ask me, I know all of them."

A friend says, "OK, what's the capital of Wisconsin?

"The blonde replies, "Oh, that's easy: "W"

My Friend, The Carrot

by Ron Lunde

Look,
Pink's for noses, like my cat's,
Green's for leaves, or maybe parrots,
Brown's for cocoa or fruit bats,
And Orange's just the thing for carrots.

Bite,
A clean snap, molars chew,
Vegetable of hearty satisfaction.
Not like okra, ooh what goo,
Where teeth don't get no traction.

Chew,
Sometimes though, a bit of grit
Hit's filling, and you'll hurt
You'll grimace then, and out you'll spit,
A bit of carrot dirt.

Good choices, Amy. I guess you didn't want to see what would happen when we hit 666. LOL :)

TWO butterflies went out at noon
And waltzed above a stream,
Then stepped straight through the firmament
And rested on a beam;

And then together bore away
Upon a shining sea,—
Though never yet, in any port,
Their coming mentioned be.

If spoken by the distant bird,
If met in ether sea
By frigate or by merchantman,
Report was not to me.

Oh goodie, a new thread! Thanks Amy. You are such a lovely hostess. Thank you for all your hard work on reviving the Poetry thread and making it even better than it was before. I love the addition of Potpourri - even some of the 'interesting' recipes - and of course your jokes! :)

A police officer stops a blonde for speeding and asks her very nicely if he could see her license.

She replied in a huff, "I wish you guys could get your act together. Just yesterday you take away my license and then today you expect me to show it to you."

A Minor Bird

I have wished a bird would fly away,
And not sing by my house all day;

Have clapped my hands at him from the door
When it seemed as if I could bear no more.

The fault must partly have been in me.
The bird was not to blame for his key.

And of course there must be something wrong
In wanting to silence any song.

Another autumn poem....

Good morning, or good night, as the case may be. Have a wonderful weekend.

Summer Shower

By, Emily Dickinson

A DROP fell on the apple tree,
Another on the roof;
A half a dozen kissed the eaves,
And made the gables laugh.

A few went out to help the brook,
That went to help the sea.
Myself conjectured, Were they pearls,
What necklaces could be!

The dust replaced in hoisted roads,
The birds jocoser sung;
The sunshine threw his hat away,
The orchards spangles hung.

The breezes brought dejected lutes,
And bathed them in the glee;
The East put out a single flag,
And signed the fête away.

Acquainted With the Night

I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain --and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.
I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.
I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,
But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height
One luminary clock against the sky
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.
