Authorities said Franzman was wearing a full wet suit, goggles, and fins when she was attacked about 75 yards from the beach, and that she may have been mistaken for a seal.

"Being in a wet suit with fins, moving in a slower pace ... the other seals moving faster. It appears to be an injured or sick seal, which is typically a food source for sharks," San Luis Obisbo County Sheriff's Department Lt. Martin Basti said.

Why do people do these things when there have been reports of sharks in the waters off CA .. I will never understand

That's why Lake Michigan is so lovely.....the only great white is the wave tops breaking over on a windy day.
