The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…

Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

The Road Goes Ever On…

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Please, some added prayers for her pain relief would be appreciated now.

Coming right up. Glad to hear all went fine.

Telephone man is here, working on the lines. The chickens are very disgruntled for still being in the coop.

Check out this pie shell! It's meant for a pumpkin pie...

1-3/4 cups gingersnap crumbs (about 43 cookies, finely crushed)
2-1/2 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Combine ingredients in a bowl; toss with a fork until moist. Press into bottom and up sides of a 9-inch pie plate coated with cooking spray. Bake at 325° for 5 minutes; cool on a wire rack.

Yeah, Luke is whining about being in his high chair. Half the living room ceiling is now on the floor and we're hesitant to let him down...I'm kinda to the point of being in the way as well. Maybe Luke needs to go somewhere...

...like a new house...

Sigh....Luke thinks the plumber looks like Papa.

I don't wanna cry in front of the repair man...

I would be a good cop....

Yes, you would. You've got the right attitude and people skills.

I wonder, though, if the price paid in sickening exposure to the worst of the worst of the city wouldn't be too high a price. After the sixth trip out to the same address for a domestic, where one crack-addled loser keeps beating up the other crack-addled loser, I'd be getting pretty tired of it all.

That... and I'd be too easy on people. I'm too much of a softie to give gramma a ticket for 45 in a 35.

Good grief, man... that's no way to start a day. Hmm, well, now that I think about it... it's not like it would be better at some other point in the day either.

Glad to hear good news about the coffee, though.

I had a similar experience in an apartment once, though I didn't have any expensive furniture at stake. But it certainly was an odd feeling to come home one day, open the door and hear water running in the living room. There was a garden hose sort of flow of water pouring through the ceiling, and about two inches of water everywhere.

When I called the management, they said they were working on the leak-- and sent up a shop vac. It's a long story from there on out but they ended up NOT even being willing to replace the ceiling panels or even the carpet! It smelled like a swamp in there. The whole experience with them was miserable, and I busted the lease and moved out. They wouldn't even return my deposit...

Like I said... glad to hear about the coffee. :-)

Okay, so maybe there's a bright spot. But I don't wanna get my hopes up.

I've mentioned before our mortage from hell. Well the company has now settled a lawsuit with the 50 Attorneys General. Charges are that the company included outrageous fees and mislead customers as to the terms of their loans. That's exactly what happened to us.

We should be getting a packet from our Attorney General (and Virginia's next great Governor) in the next few days. And, if we're eligible, which I assume we are, we'd get a settlement before the end of the year.

Today's paper says the settlements range in amounts from $50 to $15,000 depending on the damage. I figger we may only get the $50, but it'll come with a great deal of satisfaction.

I think I'd not be a good cop either.

The guy about 3 doors down is a detective, used to be undercover narcotics, which is dangerous in Miami. Yet he must be one of the nicest and friendliest fellows I've ever met.

On another note, daughter left yesterday for New York state and college. About midnite she remembered she had a few fireworks and thought it would be fun to set 'em off before she went away.

A few were those things that take off from your driveway and fly straight up spinning and buzzing into the sky and leaving a shower of sparks, then release a small parachute flair.

As we were watching, my wife said to me to get her out of the way if one of those flying things got off course and went for her.

So, the very next one, once it got about a foot off the ground, instead of continuing upwards, suddenly turned sharply, and as if demonically possessed, streaked right at her. I tried pushing her out of the way, but the thing hit her in the leg anyway, as she bounced off the car from the force of my efforts.

Anyway, it careened off her leg and went somewhere in the carport. She is Ok, was wearing long pants. However, there is a black burned spot in the white pants now, about halfway up the calf. No burned spot on her, luckily. Maybe a bruise from impact with the car.

Those things (fireworks) are lots of fun, but do contain an element of danger, I guess.

Yeah, yeah. I used to work with protective services Sam. I've heard that line before...;-)

(I hope you know I'm kidding)

I am checking in --- in the midst of the staff meeting from hell -- where once again we are taught how to fill out all possible forms and variations of forms used by the college.

It's scary that we as college instructors need more instruction than read the form and fill in the blank.

Really bad thing is, of all these forms, only one has changed from last year. But, we only talked about that form for about 20 minutes because we have another meeting all morning tomorrow at another campus to talk about the changes on that form.

They're calling me back...... ARGH!

And there's always one person who just doesn't get it, and keeps asking more and more questions while the rest of the people in the room contemplate various forms of torture.

Thanks Sam. The leak is fixed. It was just the valve on the toilet and had built up over time.

Fortunately the problem was not caused by what I did when we got back from vacation...

Whoooboy, that brings back a memory. Once the USCG sent me to an 8 hour (all day one day) training class from the Navy, that was only about how to fill out a naval supply system form. It was a one page form.

All day, thankfully, with a lunch break. By lunch I was very nearly ready to claw out my eyes and huck them at the instructor. One form. One page. Only about twenty fields to fill in. This gave them about 30 minutes to talk about EACH space on the form. We were all merely a quivering mass of useless boneless flesh by the end of the day.

The really funny part was when I got back to my ship and later had to fill out one of these forms to order some stuff from the Navy... I couldn't remember how to do it. Had to go dig out my notes. bwaahahaha...
