The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…
Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog
Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
The Road Goes Ever On
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

They are skipping an important explanation for the kiddos here. Numbers are mobile. In order to solve for N you have to isolate N to one side of the equation.
N + 6 = 10
In order to isolate N, you have to subract 6 from BOTH SIDES to keep the equation a true statement.
Here is how I would have done it slightly different.
N+6= 10
N+6-6=10-6
N+0=10-6
Therefore:
N=4 (because 10-6=4)
That help?

why do they complicate it with all that crap
(to teach them to factor algebraic you do the same thing to both sides of the equal sign?)

Yes, isn't this an illustration of an axiom?
If you do the exact same thing to both sides of an equation, then you've essentially done nothing to the equation. Therefore, if you subtract 6 from both sides of the equation, you simplify the equation:
N + 6 - 6 = 10 - 6
N = 4
The parentheses are there to make sure you execute the subtraction in the right order.
An example of the reflexive property of equality.

Hmm, I am going to go ahead and have the teriyaki chicken leftovers from last night, so I don't go to the store on an empty stomach.
Bad news, shopping while hungry, it is.
And to think, the only reason I am online this morning is to find another Tortilla Soup recipe.

Ok...just got off the phone with Wneighbor, who basically explained it to me just the same way you all did!
After going over it several times, I'm thinking I understand it...don't like it, but understand it.
