The Hammer Dulcimer was my father's next great hobby. I may try to take it up eventually just cuz it is so cool.

Rosie, before going to Texas Tech, I attended South Plains College aka Bluegrass U I know (of) some people who went there - yeah, it has quite a reputation!
You didn't know a Bryan Kimsey, did ya? He's one name I know through a couple of music lists, and I KNOW he went there. Think he would have been a few years ahead of you, though. And I don't know how big South Plains is.
To: Prof Engineer
Yep. My paternal grandmother's family was renamed Kuykendall at Ellis Island. To make it more fun, we don't pronounce it 'kirkendall' the way most in TX do Tricksy!
I had a friend in highschool from TX with the last name Kuykendall - pronounced like it has an R. Didn't know it was a common name there!
To: RosieCotton
Didn't know it was a common name there! It's not common anywhere. The folks here put the R in it. We pronounce it like you would 'guy'

When I was a kid, you couldn't shoot except between 12 and 5 on Sundays, so, after 5 all the men would put away their guns (muzzleloaders) and get out their instruments and pick-n-grin (and drink a little drink) until well after dark. That sounds WONDERFUL!
My dad did a little goofing around with the mandolin (my mom bought him one years ago, when they were still dating as I recall), but didn't really get serious about music until I was quite a bit older. I envy my younger siblings - they've gotten into music at a much younger age and have a big advantage over me! I didn't start playing mando until about two years ago. And a little guitar before that. So I'm doing OK for how long I've been playing...but by the time my sister, for example, is my age, she'll have over ten years of playing experience. You can't replace that!

She had a speech impediment, but she pronounced it with the -oi- sound like when New Yorkers say coiffee.

It was a lot of fun. We made lifelong friends by being members of a gun club. Actually, we still are members, but alot fo the oltimers are gone. The old rules are moot now (hehe I said moot) that we don't borrow the land for shooting. The club started out being named TVM (Trinity Valley Muzzleloaders), then it was called Post Oak Pioneers (the range was in Post Oak, TX). Now, it is Arlington Sportsman's Club. My parents would go shoot at Brady every year too. I loved giong to Brady, it was like having a family reunion with your friends, instead of your family.

I live at Kuykendall and 2920 .. LOL.
Big joke at our house is that Steve says WARSH for WASH. I tell him there's no R in WASH .. and he replies "There's no R in Kuykendall (pronounced KIRKendall) either!" And we both laugh.
Coincidently, he is Houston born and raised, so where the HECK did he get WARSH from?????
