The Hobbit Hole IV – The Road Goes Ever On…

Posted on 08/04/2003 9:43:18 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

The Road Goes Ever On…

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Yah, things are better this week but like I told my Dad, there's only a couple of ways this week could be worse and since I didn't bring my rifle to the office, that takes one of those ways off the table. :-)

Scott, if you get to the point where you gotta have a lesser job, then pad your resume down dude. Think less of a resume just to get a job somewheres. Then, continue using the real thing to find the job you want. Once you have a job you should have a better time getting another one. Even if it's only because it'll improve your attitude.

And sorry, those of us that interview and hire still look at somebody unemployed and wonder --- "why?" Yeah, it's wrong. And I've been the one on both sides of the table. Can't justify it but you're less likely to get hired after being out of work this long.

Therefore, don't let 'em know your full potential at someplace you think you can get a lesser job. Just suck it up if you have to. I know that's a hard thing to say but I end up saying stuff like that to my students all the time. It's the game in the real world. Much as it sucks.

Thank you dear MBY.

I have some pictures of my back yard. Now if I can make some space in my closet to store them, I will post them here.

Well, I'm glad to hear that the one way is not on the options list for the week! Somebody here would notice you were gone and miss you. We'd all feel really bad for Hair.

At least I'm glad to see you're posting with smiles! That's a good thing. :-)

I wondered about that... my mom probably needs a new knee, but she won't even consider it, just limps around on the old one. Stubborn woman.

My mother was a lot like that, until the arthritis got REALLY bad this year. She was in a lot of pain, and the doctors did every non-surgical thing to help. Pain pills and arthritis meds lessened the pain, but she was ready to go with the surgery when she realized they had done all they could do.

One benefit is that the doctors said her left knee was the only significant area of arthritis in her. They made the case that she would enjoy significantly less pain, along with significantly more mobility, with the surgery, and she was ready to go. It would have been done in March, if she hadn't slipped and broke her back. Once she was healed up, she was ready to roll.

Older folks have to learn that putting up with constant pain is a source of depression. I rate depression as a major health problem with older people. So it's not just the pain that they're "putting up with", there is also a possible source of depression that they're fighting, without realizing it.

My Grama waited until she could not even get off her bed before she consented to knee replacement. But, once she decided to go for it she told 'em she wanted both of 'em done at once. (She had to have 2.) But, she didn't want to do it halfway... just do it all, get it over with and let her get to where she could go again!

Much as she put it off, after she had it done she never regretted it. (and there were alot of complications) But, she was finally to the point that a doctor told her last year she had worn out the artificial knees and if she ever regained her health enough for the surgery she needed the replacements replaced. She didn't get to that point but I have no doubt she'd have done it if she could have.

My lecture in the graduate seminar where I'm telling people how to get hired includes writing resumes specific to jobs. Don't use the same one for every job. Taylor it to fit.

Do, I do that? NO! But, if I needed to at least I know to do so.

Gees, I got a job teaching in a college with only 2 associates degrees. And I started as head of the department at my campus. This year I was given Head of the Department for the whole college. (after 2 years here) Which means that the other guy who teaches CADD and has his Dr. in front of his name works for me. This is not due to any great ability on my part other than getting the job done and letting the people who interview me know my abilities.

I mean. I really do miss engineering and think I want to go back to it. Cause lots of these student types tick me off. But, truthfully, what do ya'll hear me complaining about most about this job? the dean thinks my hair is unprofessional. Let's see, the scale of this problem related to the rest of the world is about a 0! and my hair has remained the unacceptable color for over a year now primarily BECAUSE the dean doesn't like it! It would have been red again after 3 months if not for her gripes.

Bottom line, determine the job you want and write the resume to get it. When I re-write my resume to go back into engineering I will have to give some thought to how to spin this teaching thing. Engineers don't necesarily take to academic types. I'll have to fix that.

I haven't left YET - but I am ready to walk out the door now.

My cousin just called to let me know that my grandfather will be released from the hospital today since they found there was actually no need to do the angioplasty after all! His veins were clear when they went through with the camera just before surgery. AMAZING!

Hobbit Hole prayers are downright POWERFUL!!

Oh, and Publix Supermarket just called to say that Becky won the coloring contest for her age group, so now I don't have to worry about how I am going to be able to afford her birthday party supplies (on September 15th) - the prize is enough food and drinks and a cake for 30 people!! YIPPEE!!

Everyone is invited! :)

So, now I'm off to Walmart, then back, then off to pick up Becky, then back, then off to pick up Daniel, then back, then wait for Becky's physical therapist to arrive and then off to Publix to claim the prize!!

I need a digital camera for moments like these!

See you all later!

Wish me luck, dear.... I am goin' into town.... Back in a bit with the mooooovie.

Good luck! Mine is still being prepared for shipment. I think I should have a little bit of patience for Amazon - after all, they did set a new preorder record with this thing, so they have their hands full. If it still hasn't shipped when I head home after work tomorrow though...

Have a lovely day, Darlin'! I'm off to sit in a training class today. But my mind will be...elsewhere.

OK Hair (and any other LOTR fanatics here),
A general question for anybody who knows.
Before I go out and buy the Two Towers DVD, is Jackson planning on coming out with a director's cut DVD in a few months like he did with FOTR?
Should I wait?
Anybody, with an educated guess can answer.
Thanks in advance,
Cuz
