Drudge Sirens: TEARS ON TV: DIXIE CHICKS EXPLAIN BUSH BASHING
Drudge Report ^ | 3/24/03 | Drudge

Posted on 04/23/2003 10:43:48 AM PDT by Pro-Bush

In a candid and emotional exclusive interview, Diane Sawyer talks with the Dixie Chicks -- Natalie Maines, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire -- who finally speak out about controversial comments regarding President Bush and the war with Iraq, made last month overseas -- during a London concert.

MORE The on-stage remarks, which many say were unpatriotic, have resulted in a flood of criticism and a backlash that has included a boycott of their music.

The interview will air on “PRIMETIME THURSDAY," THURSDAY, APRIL 24 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network, but the DRUDGE REPORT can now reveal some highlights:

MORE

NATALIE MAINES ON WHETHER SHE IS TRULY SORRY FOR HER ON-STAGE COMMENT ABOUT PRESIDENT BUSH:

MAINES: I think it came down to, it was ... that it was in a foreign country and it was that it was an off-the-cuff statement…And I think the way I said it was disrespectful. The wording I used, the way I said it, that was disrespectful…

DIANE SAWYER: …I hear something not quite ... what? Whole-hearted ...

MAINES: …Really?...

SAWYER: ... when you talk about apologizing for what you said about the President.

MAINES: ….It's not because it's not genuine. It's because I'm on guard now…I feel regret for, you know, the choice of words. Or the non-choice…Am I sorry that I asked questions and that I don't just follow? No.

ON PERSONAL THREATS:

MAGUIRE: …I also believe that yes, some of our fans were upset by it, but… does the punishment fit the crime? How far are you going to go? I think it's rational and totally acceptable for people to write a letter... and say "You know, I was really offended by what you said about the President."… we know some of our fans were shocked and ... and upset, and we are compassionate to that. I totally understand it. My problem is, when does it cross the line? When is trashing Emily's property okay? When is writing a threatening letter okay?...

MAINES ON THE FIRST SIGNS OF THE BACKLASH:

SAWYER: When was the first sign you had that there was sort of a seismic tremor from this?

MAINES: We were going into this hotel…and he [the Dixie Chicks' manager] got a call … he's pacing back and forth. "Oh, no!" You know, we're automatically going "What? What happened?" And then he says, you know, he gets off the phone and I was like, "What? What happened?" "Well, the AP picked up what was said the other night... But don't worry, it's going to blow over in three days." And I looked at him and I go, "No, it's not." He goes "Yes, it is, yes. Don't worry about it." You know, giving the old manager spiel. And I said, "Oh, I don't think so."

MARTIE MAGUIRE ON THE FALL-OUT:

MAGUIRE: …We are pretty tough and we have each other and we stand by each other through thick and thin and we know we're going to make mistakes…But this was colossal. This felt so colossal.

ON THEIR SUPPORT FOR US TROOPS:

NATALIE MAINES: …we support the troops. We support the troops l00 percent. We have said that from day one. People have quoted we don’t support the troops, which is the opposite of anything we have ever said. There is not a correlation between not wanting a war and not supporting the troops who are doing their job…

EMILY ROBISON: Martie and I have family in the military. But it’s nothing more than that we want to do than have our troops be safe, successful…you know we’re very patriotic…

DIANE SAWYER: ...But there are those who say to support them is to understand how much they believe in what they're doing. And it does matter to them that you believe in what they're putting their lives on the line for.

MAINES: …as passionate as they are about their cause, I love that about them, but accept that I am passionate about mine as well…

ON THE LONDON CONCERT:

SAWYER: Why did you say it?

MAINES: Out of frustration. At that moment, on the eve of war, I had a lot of questions that I felt were unanswered….

MAINES: You know we didn't walk off that stage going, oh my God, oh my God, I can't believe I said that.

As the liberals say about the Constitution, You read it your way, I'll read it mine.

You're a hoot, Joe. Not an intellectual giant, by any means, but a hoot.

Did you say you were a big Dixie Chicks fan? LOL

Sorry, you cannot "Support the troops" without supporting the Commander-In-Chief. You are either lying, or very uneducated about the U.S. form of government.

Kosovo? Somalia? Bells ringing? I wholeheartedly support the troops in those cases however I did not support the decisions made by the CIC. Oh, but he was a Democrat, so that makes it alright then, is that it?

Take a look at Joe Whitey's posts and apply the following to it. You will learn the technique he is using for his debating points.

Fallacy: False Dilemma

Also Known as: Black & White Thinking.

Description of False Dilemma

A False Dilemma is a fallacy in which a person uses the following pattern of "reasoning":

  1. Either claim X is true or claim Y is true (when X and Y could both be false).
  2. Claim Y is false.
  3. Therefore claim X is true.

This line of "reasoning" is fallacious because if both claims could be false, then it cannot be inferred that one is true because the other is false. That this is the case is made clear by the following example:

  1. Either 1+1=4 or 1+1=12.
  2. It is not the case that 1+1=4.
  3. Therefore 1+1=12.

In cases in which the two options are, in fact, the only two options, this line of reasoning is not fallacious. For example:

  1. Bill is dead or he is alive.
  2. Bill is not dead.
  3. Therefore Bill is alive.

Examples of False Dilemma

  1. Senator Jill: "We'll have to cut education funding this year."
    Senator Bill: "Why?"
Senator Jill: "Well, either we cut the social programs or we live with a huge deficit and we can't live with the deficit."

  2. Bill: "Jill and I both support having prayer in public schools."
Jill: "Hey, I never said that!"
Bill: "You're not an atheist are you Jill?"

  3. "Look, you are going to have to make up your mind. Either you decide that you can afford this stereo, or you decide you are going to do without music for a while."

Can you not read? She CLEARLY said that was the opinion of those who didn't listen to the music - the people she wanted to convert to fans. Sheesh. This is getting ridiculous. Why would she call herself, a country music fan, a dumb, conservative redneck?

Yes, I read fine. I see that she is attributing that comment to others, as any fool would, so please quit believing that your command of the english language is superior to that of everyone else. Why would the word conservative get mentioned unless it was meant to be derogatory (yes, I know others were saying it, please stop making the same point)? Why would she have to convince someone that the fans are not conservative unless she feels it to be something to be excused? Would she have mentioned to the detractors that they may be 'conservative' but they are not dumb rednecks? No, she just lumped the three together. Being truly sorry shows when a person speaks in what they say and how they say it. She is only sorry for the back-lash. This is obvious from the interview.

She will never make things right in my mind. Nothing she can do or say will ever fix this for me.

I am an "army brat" and live/work in a military town. I was a fan, had both of their CDs, and have paid to see them in concert.

Had she made her heinous remarks here in the Good 'Ol USA...I might have been able to forgive her. That she did it on foreign soil, never!

She does have a right to speak her mind. Our Consitution guarantees her that right. I don't have to agree with her. I certainly don't agree with Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Martin Sheen and the like. But at least they have the nerve to spew their venom here at home.

So are you actually saying that the stereotype of "conservative, backward rednecks" doesn't describe at least some percentage of C&W fans? Personally, I'd take that as a complement if it came from some big-city, lefty-looney soccer mom type.

So, Joe, when did you stop beating your wife?

(P.S. Sorry, I don't answer nonsensical questions. I'll leave those for you.)

Playin' much soccer lately?

Good point and "Two Lane Blacktop" was a pretty cool film.

I don't really have a problem with someone supporting a cause I don't agree with. I got a big problem with someone telling me:

-- I'm a bad person for holding beliefs I have. (George Clooney, Julia Roberts)
-- Seeing a moral equivilancy between murderers and American soldiers (Earle)
-- Thoughtlessly criticizing their country on foreign soil.(French Hens)

It's not just a picture, it's a link to a funny video (opens in a new window). I guess I should have made my post text larger and the picture smaller.

To make amends, they could donate the proceeds of their concert tour to the families of service people who lost their loved ones who fought to defend the DCs rights to be idiots.

I'd love to see OJ say something like, "I'm sorry that I disappointed my fans by killing my wife, but anyone who would stop going to my movies because of that was never a real fan."

You are correct, I was never a fan. Thank g_d, Emmylou Harris has the good sense and dignity to keep her political opinions to herself.

Go back and see who called WHO names FIRST, and totally unprovoked.

Trying to get people banned from the forum isn't a hobby of mine...I leave that up to people who don't have anything better to do, than hold grudges. Pathetic character flaws.

The more Natalie talks.. the more she inserts her foot down her throat. She named names and goes to calling rednecks, conservatives.. etc etc. Typical Natalie Maines!!! All of what is happening to her is so Natalie. Those of us who have known her and not one bit suprised by all of this attention and her doing the blame game.

Yes, but Bush supported those Clinton operations. The real hypocrites are those on the Left who supported Clinton when he invaded Haiti and bombed Serbia -- all without UN approval, but supported Saddam against Bush -- even confessing in writing that they wanted more American deaths so as to embarras Bush.

Not at all. No one is forcing them to do anything. You asked what they could do. I gave you an example of something real and meaningful. I still wouldn't like their music, but I'd respect them.
