Since 911, hundreds of U.S. Military members have died in the "War" on terrorism. Their surviving family members and especially the children of deceased members are devastated and their financial future is in great jeopardy.

Q. - Are the people of New York City and Washington, D.C., especially Manhattan and Georgetown, collecting and distributing money for these families ?

One of Imus' guests brought up the fact that the Red Cross still has $400 Million in their 9-11 fund. Honestly can't remember who it was but they suggested just what you are suggesting.

I think what DTS 32041 is referring to is called Serviceman's Group Life Insurance. When we were in Vietnam (3rd Bn, 26th Marines 68-69), I think the payout amount was $25K (?) and they deducted $2.00(?)/month from our pay for it. Remember those forms you had to fill out for your SRB that designated your next of kin? One of them was for SGLI. Over the years the payout amount and the monthly deductible have increased.

Given the harzardous nature of a grunt's life, it's about the only insurance a Marine - or most other servicemembers -can get that will provide a benefit if you are killed in combat. Most commercial insurance has what they call "war clauses" that specifically exclude pay out for a war-related death (among other things).

Well as you can see from my tagline I was a grunt right after you were there. However I was so cocky I didn't even inquire about any life insurance because I had no intention of coming back in a bag. And with me walking point in '69 & '70 Lloyds of London wouldn't have insured my arse! LOL Especially after I got hit the first week I was there. Welcome home Marine. Semper Fi

I've seen it happen to these families over and over again since 1965. [USMC 1965-1971]

We have one locally, a 5 year USMC E-4, now dead, a wife and 3 daughters. His unit has about 60% of the families on food stamps. Local community support will try to help. The USMC family / unit support group will try to help.

While the Navy/Marine Relief Society does try, it takes about $33,500.00 annually to fully support a family with the 2.5 child average. That will be about $600,000.00 needed until these kids are adults and on their own. The Navy/Marine Relief Society averages just over $5,000.00 per help [one time payment] unit for health care and just under $1000.00 per help unit for education assistance.

His unit raised $1450.00 and sent it to the 911 victims.

These military service personnel and their families have given all, now where is the Manhattan and Georgetown outpouring ?

My brother was in radar in the USN. He married a woman with two kids whose flier husband had been killed. My brother went on to be a project manager for GE Astrospace and then to Lockheed in satellite technology. Needless to say, his wife and step kids went right along with him. They did very well, thanks.
