There was something similar occuring within the Army's officer ranks when the dispute over the Bush-Gore election results was to be settled in the courts. A fairly large number of officers who were prepared to resign their commissions if Gore had prevailed were counseled to do otherwise, as their services could be vitally required in the immediate future. Recall that at the time, there were threats of riots in certain communities unless the election was thrown to Gore. They would not have been successful.
