[history]
For more than a decade, Cancun, Mexico, has been party central for the boozed, be-thonged and besotted boys and girls of spring break. But this year, the drink-till-you-drop college crowd will find less-indulgent hosts.
A majority of the Caribbean resort's hotels, bars and clubs that cater to the student trade have signed a ''civility agreement'' to enforce laws that in past years often were ignored, officials say. Among them are bans on underage drinking and public nudity.

Another no-talent heard from:
"I am not anti-Bush. I am not pro-Iraq. I am pro-peace," her Madg-esty has declared in an effort to explain her new video (and no doubt stir up more CD-selling controversy). The video for her new single, "American Life," doesn't come out till next month. But according to early reports, Madonna sends a blunt antiwar message by turning a fashion show into a battle zone where she appears as a grenade-lobbing superhero. Many of the media reports about the video have been "inaccurate," the diva says on her Web site. "I feel lucky to be an American citizen for many reasons - one of which is the right to express myself freely. That's how I honor my country." Daily News

I found this somewhat depressing:
"Meet the dirtysomethings", from an Australian newspaper. Excerpt:
Then there's another famous dirtysomething, Gwyneth Paltrow, who once explained her predilection for serial dating by saying "I'm a very sexual person". The perfect length for a dirtysomething relationship? "I'm lucky if I get past six weeks," Paltrow admitted. "The make-or-break point comes then."
None of that coy sexuality rubbish for the dirtysomething! She knows what she wants in bed, and she's confident enough to get it. Ask her how many people she's slept with and she probably couldn't tell you - not because the number is particularly huge, but because it's not important enough to remember.
"The best thing about being in this life stage is that it's free of sexual judgement," said Nadia. "Who cares if I have sex on the first date? Or even before it? It's not like I expect the guy to marry me. In fact, I might not even want to see him again. My choice."
To: mountaineer
So, she never gets depressed or lonely?
"Sure, sometimes," Nadia said, "but I get huge emotional support from my close girlfriends. We act as a surrogate family and give each other more support than you'd get in most relationships."
It will not end all that well if the dirtysomethings don't snap to.

That is exactly correct. Here's an interesting article in Time:
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1101030224-423465,00.html
WARNING WILL ROBINSON: MAJOR RANT COMING:
I am very concerned with the apparent lack of preparation at local and state levels after reading this - and it must be realized that it is only one side of the story. The govt may well have done more than is listed in the article.
However, I am also concerned with the lack of preparation by the feds. Firemen should have at least by now the appropriate communication tools to aid them in a major attack. AT LEAST NYC and DC firemen should have them.
I have never been impressed with Tommy Thompson - and Tom Ridge seems to be a non-entity. The duct tape/plastic advice was pretty lame. They should hire those of us who have a clue about bioterror organisms and chemicals and let us whip our local and state govt health organizations into shape (and no, I don't need a job).
I do believe that more should be done on the borders - I personally believe they should be closed and all muslims who are here illegally, deported. I think the INS is a disaster - they are more concscious of serving their constituency than protecting Americans. Same thing at State.
RE: container shipping at ports - that is probably the biggest headache - how do you inspect every container? They are huge. It would take forever. It would cost a lotta money. You would wait a heckuva lot longer for that tv or sofa set or whatever. However, I believe that bright Americans with experience in the shipping industry can, when brought together, come up with a plan which will make us much safer at our ports - it is possible.
I don't know what Tom Ridge and his men/women are doing to make us safer other than posting a list of things to have in your house in case of attack. I'm sorry, but I think I could run Homeland Defense better than what we've seen from Tom Ridge. If he's doing more than what we see, he should be trumpeting it to every corner of the country because if we are hit again, George Bush will pay the price, rightly or wrongly.
With the dems bitching that we haven't spent enough so HOW could we consider tax cuts (uh, we have an economy to stimulate and that need would only grow with another attack you dumb jerks), they would be sure to lambast Bush in the event of another attack.
However, I don't believe in their approach which is to throw more money at the thing WITHOUT any accountability. Perhaps those of us with some knowledge of bugs and chemicals should volunteer our time and expertise to our local authorities - we could work to see that our communities are protected. That approach is probably more in line with the responsibility we republicans expect of people.
I do think the dims are full of it when they say that we should expect the fed govt to protect us - yes, we should expect them to do their very best in routing out terrorists and stopping attacks. They should also provide guidelines for states and communities to follow regarding protection from various potential hazards of terrorism. HOWEVER, I see no reason to hold the feds accountable for my own personal safety in my own personal home in my own personal community. We Americans must take the initiative to protect ourselves at the personal level while asking the feds to do their very best in finding terrorists and breaking up their plots. But get real people, we can't expect the feds to do everything. We are ultimately responsible for us.
That said, SOMEBODY in the administration needs to do a better job of communicating the successes of the War on Terror to the American people. Have a briefing on the number of Al Qaeda dead and caught - show their pictures. Pass out the president's terrorist picture list and let us mark the bad guys off along with him each time one is caught. Tell us what else you've done. Make it more than just words that we're "doing better." Be accountable.
Second, where are we now with Iraq? Over a week ago Sec. Powell made a convincing case for us to go into Iraq immediately. Yet, here we sit all week long wondering why nothing is happening - oh yes, those of us who follow it know that good 'ol Hans and Mohammed had a report to deliver to the UN this past Friday. However, most of the country doesn't follow this and are left, along with us, wondering if we are serious about getting the job done. Seems to me we've only given the anti-war protestors more time to get their publicity. Who's running this thing???
I feel a bit better now. I hope I haven't put you all through this rant selfishly. I just am frustrated with federal lapses in communication and apparent planning. And I'm irritated at the dims for demogoging the homeland security issue.

A most excellent analysis of the way I feel - thank you for expressing it so well.
Passing all the Patriot Acts and other freedom infringing bills does nothing to protect citizens as long as our borders are as porous as they've ever been, and as long as the Diversity Visas are still being pimped on the internet advertising for any and all to Come to America.
Frankly, I'm sick of it.

Eighteen Reasons Why Golf Is Better
Than Sex
18- You don't have to sneak your golf magazines into the house.
17- If you are having trouble with golf, it's perfectly acceptable to pay a professional to show you how to improve your technique.
16- The Ten Commandments don't say anything about golf..
15- If your partner takes pictures or videotapes of you golfing, you don't have to worry about them showing up on the Internet when you become famous.
14- Your golf partner won't keep asking questions about other partners you've golfed with.
13- It's perfectly respectable to golf with a total stranger.
12- When you see a really good golfer, you don't have to feel guilty about imagining the two of you golfing together.
11- If your regular golf partner isn't available, he/she won't object if you golf with someone else.
10- Nobody will ever tell you that you can go blind if you golf by yourself.
9- When dealing with a golf pro, you never have to wonder if they are really an undercover cop.
8- You don't have to go to a sleazy shop in a seedy neighborhood to buy golf stuff.
7- You can have a golf calendar on your wall at the office, tell golf jokes and invite co-workers to golf with you without getting sued for harassment.
6- There's no such thing as a golf transmitted disease.
5- If you want to watch golf on television, you don't have to subscribe to a premium cable channel.
4- Nobody expects you to promise to golf with just one partner for the rest of your life.
3- Nobody expects you to give up golfing if your partner loses interest in the game.
2- You don't have to be a newlywed to plan a vacation primarily for the enjoyment of golf.
1- Your golf partner will never say, "What? We just golfed last week! Is that all you ever think about?"

Always stays there, eh? I've wondered what it would be like to be a dad, sitting down to watch some TV and that add for "Girls Gone Wild" video comes on. Then lo and behold, dad sees his daughter in one of the scenes... Thank God there were no Video Cameras when I was young. I'd probably still be in jail.
The real shocker for a lot of these girls is gonna be a dozen or so years from now when one of their kid's friends brings over their dad's copy to show everyone. They will just have to hope the preachers wife is on the same tape.
That said, the tapes are still a "must buy" for all us old preverts.

Not snowing, but pouring rain here. A little while ago I spotted my France trip journal on the desk. I flopped on the couch and "went to France" again. Sigh.
But I was struck by one thing. Remember me telling you how, in every restaurant out in the country, people pummeled us with their opinions that GWB is dangerous?! And they just didn't believe American polls showing the people supporting him. When we said we liked Bush and felt safer than when Clintoon was at the helm, they acted as though we were being naive.
Well, today it occurred to me that French travellers to the US will now be surprised to find the same bewilderment and even hostility that we faced "over there". I suspect in the past the French were treated as more wordly and sophisticated when they came here. No more. They've got a rude surprise coming when they travel the US this spring.

There's a thread over at the Fodors board you might find interesting. One person got slammed for suggesting a boycott of travel to France because of its anti-U.S. policies.
As for the French people, I only can guess that they're so used to having horndog cowardly jerks for leaders, so they thought Clinton was just the epitome of presidential character. Bush stands for something, and that's a foreign concept to the surrender wimps (we got a real whiff of that at the Caen Memorial museum, which glossed over their eager capitulation to, and collaboration with, the Nazis, while loud anti-U.S. exhibits blared in the background).
