I judge a country's development by how much duct tape they use and how easy it is to buy. It works...in eastern Africa, you almost never see the stuff. I used to bring it with me from home. In South America, in some places it is rare, but in the more developed countries it can be bought in any store. I call it the duct tape indicator.

It is also an indicator of the amount of stuff that we have that breaks. My FIL was one of the kings of duct tape - he would not leave home without it.
