MODESTO Scott Peterson, whose pregnant wife, Laci, has been missing since late December, tried to sell the couple's Modesto, Calif., home, sources close to the investigation into her disappearance said. Peterson allegedly looked into selling the home, saying he had issues with it and didn't want Laci coming back to it. The deal to sell the home was scrapped about a week after Scott first began looking into it, according to a Sacramento television station. But Peterson, 30, reportedly is driving around town in a new truck these days. He traded in his missing wife's Range Rover SUV for a Dodge pickup truck, sources close to the investigation said. It's unclear what motivated the transaction and Modesto police have not commented.
A Slap in the Face
But the news is a blow to Laci's friends and relatives.
"Sharon, Laci's mom, turned to all of us and said, 'You know Scott sold Laci's car, don't you?' And we were all just shocked, absolutely shocked. And we didn't know, I didn't know what to say," Luceene Gee, who has been volunteering in the search for the missing woman, told KOVR.
"My first thought was, 'How cold.' I mean, that's a piece of Laci," Gee said.
Another volunteer commented on how the news must be affecting Laci's mother.
"I felt so bad for her, because it's just like another slap in the face for her," said Bruceene Norton. "She's grieving her child, she doesn't know where she is, she doesn't know what happened to her, doesn't know what's happened to the grandchild. And [he's] sold the car, wants to sell the house. It's heartbreaking."
Heather Sutton, a friend of Laci's, also told KOVR she found the news distressing.
"It was hard to hear that, just because I know that, just by looking at the car, it's totally Laci and by hearing that she loved that car, that was difficult for me. And maybe he has his reasons I don't know," Sutton said.
Family members held a candlelight vigil on Jan. 31 for the 27-year-old Laci and her unborn child, who was to have been named Connor.
Scott Peterson says he last saw Laci on the morning of Dec. 24, when he left on a solo fishing trip. She was eight months pregnant at the time.
Police have not named Peterson as a suspect in his wife's disappearance, but attention has focused on him, in part, because he admits he told his wife he was having an affair shortly before she vanished.
In a recent interview with ABCNEWS' Diane Sawyer, Peterson said his wife accepted his affair with Amber Frey, a single mother from Fresno, when he told her back in early December. Frey has said she had no idea Peterson was married, and that she contacted Modesto police as soon as she realized the man she was seeing was connected to a missing person's case.
Peterson told Sawyer he and his wife never even had a fight over his extramarital affair, adding that he never laid a hand on Laci and hopes to find her alive.

I cannot really stomach to watch television news very often. But thanks for the suggestion, perhaps I'll buckle up and try.
so you don't have to keep asking who what where every other post.
Another thing which would eliminate the necessity of me asking who what where every other post would be if someone would deign to quickly summarize a brief but complete answer to my question. Evidently that person will not be you, presumably because it would have taken too much time and effort. But thanks for taking the time and effort to tell me to watch television,
It's fascinating what a difficult time people are having answering my straightforward (and quite sincere, I assure you) question.
I really was just wondering if "Scott Peterson" was someone famous, y'know. I gather that he is not, and nobody here actually can explain why they are fascinated with some random missing persons case. That's ok. I was just asking,
Not to sound crass, but there are many murders which take place across this country.
I wrote Yes there are, and this is one we have chosen to discuss at this time.
Where does his statement that I replied to ask "WHY are you discussing this case at this time?"
There is a topic on FR to discuss crime because many of us happen to be interested in that topic. Of course it's not the only thing going on and we are well aware of that.
No problem....let me know if I can be of anymore assistance to you.
Actually, I did ask a question: "Seriously, why are we paying attention to this guy, is he someone famous?" Re-re-read my post #23.
If he's not interested in true crime this is not the thread for him. No need for him to put the rest of us down because we keep up with missing/murdered persons.
I don't believe I have put anyone down in this thread. If I have, I apologize in advance.
I do find myself wondering why some correspondents are so defensive about my inquiry.
I know you were talking to Dr. Frank, but I'm wondering if you could be of some assistance to me.
I'd like to know why this Scott Peterson thing is such a big deal right now.
You are right, I didn't ask literally that question, in so many words.
I asked other questions whose import and purpose was the same as that question. But I didn't ask that exact question, no.
I would like to know the answer to that question, though. If it's not too much trouble.
Just wondering where you stood on that issue since you had eloquently expressed your concern for the child.
Right. My nightmare here is, I turn on the news, and what do I get? Mr. Blow-Dry repeating the words, "Scott Peterson has sold his missing wife's car" with some stock footage of whatever type of SUV she drove. Or whatever. In other words, more chit-chat about "Scott Peterson", little perspective about why "Scott Peterson".
I figured that a simple inquiry on this thread would save me some time and annoyance, but obviously I was wrong :) Anyway, I think I get it now. Scott Peterson and Laci Peterson are/were regular people, not famous, but something intangible about their case - her pregnancy (I gather she is/was pregnant), his behavior (I gather his behavior is weird), whatever - makes it fascinating for many people.
That's ok with me. I just wanted to know,
Really, was this post not intended to put down the people interested in this case.
"But maybe we can look on the bright side, the return of a shallow obsession with sensationalistic crime stories may indicate that we're winning the war on terror.... :) I mean sometimes I really do long for the quaint superficial days of pre-9/11, when Gary Condit / Chandra Levy was important and fascinating, when Bush was "putting arsenic in our water", and so on... Oh for the days when we didn't have real stuff to worry about, right?"
Got us going there for awhile. Pretending you don't watch the news or read the newspapers.
By your own posts and nature of your personality, Dr. Frank...you have to be putting us on..LOL!
OK...the reason we are soooo fascinated with this case, is that Scott Peterson is a study of an example of a lieing, cheating, murdering husband. This case has all the elements that would make a best seller mystery novel, only it's REAL! How about that?
Join us, you might have some FUN...

Not really, or at least, not on any serious level. I consider a shallow obsession with sensationalistic crime stories to spring from deep-rooted aspects of human nature, and I don't think it is anything to be hugely ashamed of. Like someone else said earlier on this thread, people will always be fascinated by such stories no matter what else is going on in the world. I like to follow the ups and downs of baseball season. We all have our own shallow obsessions. And I meant it when I said that sometimes I long for the days of pre-9/11 when such things seemed more important.
I don't, at least not with any regularity to speak of. I think the last time I picked up a newspaper was an LA Times which was sitting on the next table in a coffee shop somewhere, a couple weeks ago. I have watched some TV news this past week, having to do with the space shuttle. But most of the time I get all my news from the internet, and FR in particular. This shouldn't really surprise you all that much :)

That is the best answer I have received thus far. Thank you very much! :)
How bad can a man be who watches The Simpsons, anyway? :~)
