Here is a Chandra X-ray image of the neutron star:

It's strange that the APOD editors make no mention of the possibility that this object is actually a quark star.

Are these images distributed with some kind of color filter? Or are Nebulae really that brilliant?

Quark star? That's a new one on me - one that's collapsed into its component quarks? Yeesh!
