Behind America's shield

It's Time To End The War On Drunk Driving

Because as everyone knows,
a) Alcoholism is a disease. You can't cure a disease by throwing sick people in jail.
b) You can't legislate morality!

Truly, drunk drivers need a better press agent. There's no other way to explain how the same people who point to reductions in drunk driving rates through enforcement and stiffer sentencing, also argue that "jail is not the answer" for the criminal drug abuser.

Witness this odd defense of "safe injection sites" by Barbara Yaffe;

- Between June of 2007 and June of 2008, 222 users overdosed at the East Hastings clinic and received immediate intervention. Some of those users might otherwise have died in a back alley.

Just as drunks die, unmourned and unexcused, in alleys and ditches every day of the year. What's so damned special about junkies that they merit the equivalent of a taxpayer funded drunk drivers' lane with rescue teams at the ready?

"We're just grateful he didn't take anyone with him".

overdose.jpg

Finally, glimmers of rational thought. Someone in government willing to voice the obvious - "It's the crap they're shooting directly into their veins, stupid."

"The supervised injection site undercuts the ethic of medical practice and sets a debilitating example for all physicians and nurses, both present and future in Canada," he scolded in an address to the Canadian Medical Association general council meeting in Montreal.

He called providing a safe injection site to drug addicts tantamount to offering palliative care to a patient with a treatable form of cancer. [...]

"Is it true that supervised injections offer 'positive health outcomes?' I would not put it this way. Insite [Vancouver's safe injection site] may slow the death spiral of a deadly drug habit, but it does not reverse it. I do not regard this as a positive health outcome."

Indeed.

And fast forward 30 years to the moment when a Canadian Prime Minister stands before Parliament to issue an official apology - and restitution - to the "Survivors of Safe Injection Sites". It will happen. One only hopes they bankrupt the Canadian Medical Association first.

And he's not the only one. In Saskatchewan, SDA gets results!

I do believe, however, in compromise. Simply inform those doctors and junkie advocates so utterly convinced that projects such as Insite are worth funding, that the programs will continue - so long as the injection sites are relocated to their own primary residences.

Gated communities could benefit from a little social diversity, yes?

I have been hit with another human rights complaint

| | |

siren.gifsiren.gifsiren.gifRob Wells is the Fred Phelps of the gay rights lobby.

Phelps, as readers will know, is the former award-winning civil rights activist who just snapped about 25 years ago. Now he pickets funerals, holding up signs saying things like “God hates fags”.

Wells is pretty much the same, but without the noble past. And he switches Phelps’s routine around a little: he protests outside churches, for months on end, slandering Catholics. He actually dresses his vehicle with anti-Christian hate messages, equating Catholics with Nazis, and drives around looking for people to offend. I wouldn't be surprised if he does funerals, like Phelps does.

Come to think of it, Wells could use the same posters as Phelps, with just a little re-arranging: “Fags hate God”. But that’s probably not vile enough for Wells, the garbage-mouthed fool who thought the bumper sticker “F*CK HARPER” was the height of political eloquence.

The fact is, it’s Phelps and Wells who are the haters.

Which is why it’s such an honour that the latest human rights complaint filed against me is by Rob Wells.

You can read a copy of the complaint here, filed with the Canadian Human Rights Commission. I received word of this complaint just last week.

It’s not Wells’s first time using the CHRC to prosecute his hatred for Christians. They’re a perfect fit for each other, Wells and the CHRC. Wells drives around town, uttering anti-Christian filth; the CHRC staff surf around the Internet, publishing racist and anti-gay filth. It’s surprising that the CHRC hasn’t hired Wells to be one of their online hatemongers – he could do what he loves, and get paid for it.

Wells is a favourite of the CHRC. He has used the CHRC to harass the Christian Heritage Party. And he was the complainant against Fr. Alphonse de Valk and Catholic Insight magazine, that drained them of $20,000 in legal fees. That complaint was dismissed by the CHRC when they started getting political heat over it, but Wells is now appealing that dismissal.

Between making little Catholic children cry at church and filing nuisance suits, where does the man find the time?

His complaint against me is rooted in my recent republication of Rev. Stephen Boissoin’s editorial column in the Red Deer Advocate several years ago. That was the column in which Rev. Boissoin expressed his Christian opposition to gay rights – and it resulted in a complaint filed against him at the Alberta HRC. After five grueling years of bureaucratic bullying, Rev. Boissoin was sentenced to a $7,000 fine, a lifetime ban against giving any public sermons that were “disparaging” to gay rights (he was also banned from sending private e-mails about the subject) and he was actually ordered to publicly renounce his religious beliefs on the subject. Seriously – read the sentence here for yourself if you can't believe it.

I republished Rev. Boissoin’s column in full, as a sign of my freedom and as an indication that I don’t grant the government the moral authority to tell me what I can or can’t say. I’m pleased to say that Canada’s leading gay lobby, EGALE, agrees exactly with my position. They know that Wells’s fascism is an embarrassment to their cause. And – more than an embarrassment – it endangers anyone who might be the target of an overweening state, like gays themselves were in the past.

Let’s walk through the letter I received from the CHRC.

The cover letter

Mysterious signature.jpgThe first page says that a CHRC investigator will recommend that the CHRC commissioners shouldn't proceed against me. The commissioners, who are political appointees, will make that decision at their next meeting.

What I find so delicious about this cover letter, though, is that it is not signed by any person – rather, by “Investigations Division”. I’ve never seen that before – it’s always the investigating officer’s name on the letter. Why the sudden coyness? Who could my secret admirer be?

Sandy Kozak signature.jpgThe handwriting looks neat, even pretty, but deliberately illegible. Every other investigator’s report is signed by the particular officer. I’ve seen CHRC reports signed by Dean Steacy, John Chamberlin and Sandy Kozak (at left), but the name clearly isn’t one of those, though it looks like Kozak’s handwriting.

I think it’s Kozak – the corrupt ex-cop who was drummed out of the real police force. I could be wrong, though. It might be Jadewarr. (UPDATE: After looking at the two signatures next to each other, I think it's someone other than Kozak. Why the shyness? Like Kozak, is she, too, a discredited ex-cop?) (UPDATE2: A commenter points out that the signature is that of Natalie Dagenais, director of investigations; I've changed that below.)

The cover letter asks me to furnish my reply to Wells’s complaint in the next two weeks. I’ll be sure to post it to my blog when it’s done.

The investigator’s report

I love the top talent at the CHRC. Dagenais litters her report with factual errors. My favourite is the news that I founded the Western Standard magazine in 2002. A simple Google search would show that’s not true. That’s not an important error, of course. But it shows the generally second-rate quality of employees at the CHRC. That’s a rare point of agreement between me and Bernie “Burny” Farber of the Canadian Jewish Congress: the CHRC is full of incompetent hacks who waste our tax dollars on nonsense like reviewing websites for whiny anti-Christian bigots who can dish it out, but can't take it. I suppose you don’t have to be a competent investigator, though, when you know in advance that you’re going to get a conviction – despite the second-rateness all around, the CHRC has never lost a section 13 hate speech case before the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. I hear Fidel Castro sent experts to learn from the CHRC how to improve Cuba's 99% conviction rate.

Most of the rest of the report is boilerplate bumf – where keystone cops like Dagenais pretend they’re lawyers who assess complaints through anything other than a Marxist prism.

I have more rights than Rev. Boissoin

Skim past those boring parts – the CHRC commissioners don’t read them, so why should you? Go to the good stuff. It starts at around page 7 of Kozak’s report, which is page 8 of the .pdf. Look at paragraph 20. Here we learn a new fact: Wells had complained to the CHRC about Rev. Boissoin, and the case against Rev. Boission was approved by the commissioners to move to the next stage: either a forced plea bargain (the CHRC calls it a conciliation) or the dreaded, 100% conviction rate tribunal.

Ignore for a moment the double jeopardy here – that Rev. Boissoin was prosecuted by the Alberta HRC, and then again by the CHRC, something that would never happen to, say, an accused murderer, but happened to an accused pastor. Look at what the CHRC’s investigator and political commissioners recommended: that Wells’s complaint against Rev. Boissoin be prosecuted by the CHRC.

Stop.

Think about that. The CHRC’s investigator has recommended that I be let go for the exact same act of hate speech that Rev. Boissoin committed – and he wasn’t let go.

Just in case the double standard wasn’t clear enough, as paragraph 21 notes, I even declared that I was willfully committing a hate crime.

How does the CHRC justify this double standard? In a single, vacuous sentence. See paragraph 28: “In [the Boissoin] complaint, the letter appeared in a different context”.

Boissoin’s column appeared in the Red Deer Advocate – a mild and mainstream newspaper, as part of a broader debate. It was the heartfelt view of a Christian pastor. I simply reprinted it as an act of defiance. Yet Boissoin was the one sent on for prosecution?

Paragraph 31 says I was let go because my publication of the column wasn’t in a “forum which espouses extreme views of hatred”. Right. Neither is the Red Deer Advocate.

Paragraph 32 indicates that I knew the column was a “hate crime”, and Rev. Boissoin didn’t. Right – so I willfully promoted “hatred”, as opposed to Rev. Boissoin.

But for sheer creative writing, look at paragraph 33: Dagenais invents a new test for section 13 hate speech cases. She says my publication was “more likely” to promote a debate than to promote hatred. Is that the new test? Something can promote hate, but if it also promotes debate, then it’s not hate speech? They’re making this stuff up as they go along, and it’s not hard to guess why: Rev. Boissoin was poor, powerless and easy prey for them. I’m a noisy troublemaker, and Rob Wells is forcing them to deal with me. Still, exactly the same excuse could be used for Rev. Boissoin – we know for a fact his column led to a great debate.

Let’s do it again, with gusto

I’m disgusted with Rob Wells – he’s just as despicable as Fred Phelps. But he’s just an individual bigot, and he's got the freedom to utter his filthy speech. What’s truly appalling, though, is how he’s turned the CHRC into his personal anti-Christian inquisition – going after the Christian Heritage Party, Rev. Boissoin and Fr. de Valk. Without the CHRC’s aid and comfort, Wells would still be driving around Edmonton in his hatemobile, a pitiful, angry, junior Fred Phelps. But, thanks to Jennifer Lynch and the rest of the team at the CHRC, the taxpayers of Canada and the laws of Canada have been hijacked, yet again.

So let me publish the same illegal words again. And let me do it for a different reason.

I’m not publishing these words as part of any “debate”. I am publishing them for the express purpose of promoting contempt – contempt for Rob Wells, and contempt for his gophers at the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

I’m publishing it to promote contempt for Jennifer Lynch, the chief commissioner of the CHRC who presides over an anti-Christian inquisition, and for all of the other commissioners – David Langtry, Robin Baird, Roch Fournier, Sandi Bell and Yvonne Boyer – who have joined forces with the real bigots of this country, people like Rob Wells, and even the corrupt thugs working at the commission who gaily join neo-Nazi groups like Stormfront, with the commissioners’ full approval.

I have contempt for them, and I wish to spread it to all of my fellow Canadians.

Jennifer Lynch: like most bullies, you are a coward who picks on penniless pastors like Rev. Boissoin. Why don't you come and get me?

Homosexual Agenda Wicked

The following is not intended for those who are suffering from an unwanted sexual identity crisis. For you, I have understanding, care, compassion and tolerance. I sympathize with you and offer you my love and fellowship. I prayerfully beseech you to seek help, and I assure you that your present enslavement to homosexuality can be remedied. Many outspoken, former homosexuals are free today.

Instead, this is aimed precisely at every individual that in any way supports the homosexual machine that has been mercilessly gaining ground in our society since the 1960s. I cannot pity you any longer and remain inactive. You have caused far too much damage.

My banner has now been raised and war has been declared so as to defend the precious sanctity of our innocent children and youth, that you so eagerly toil, day and night, to consume. With me stand the greatest weapons that you have encountered to date - God and the "Moral Majority." Know this, we will defeat you, then heal the damage that you have caused. Modern society has become dispassionate to the cause of righteousness. Many people are so apathetic and desensitized today that they cannot even accurately define the term "morality."

The masses have dug in and continue to excuse their failure to stand against horrendous atrocities such as the aggressive propagation of homo- and bisexuality. Inexcusable justifications such as, "I'm just not sure where the truth lies," or "If they don't affect me then I don't care what they do," abound from the lips of the quantifiable majority.

Face the facts, it is affecting you. Like it or not, every professing heterosexual is have their future aggressively chopped at the roots.

Edmund Burke's observation that, "All that is required for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing," has been confirmed time and time again. From kindergarten class on, our children, your grandchildren are being strategically targeted, psychologically abused and brainwashed by homosexual and pro-homosexual educators.

Our children are being victimized by repugnant and premeditated strategies, aimed at desensitizing and eventually recruiting our young into their camps. Think about it, children as young as five and six years of age are being subjected to psychologically and physiologically damaging pro-homosexual literature and guidance in the public school system; all under the fraudulent guise of equal rights.

Your children are being warped into believing that same-sex families are acceptable; that men kissing men is appropriate.

Your teenagers are being instructed on how to perform so-called safe same gender oral and anal sex and at the same time being told that it is normal, natural and even productive. Will your child be the next victim that tests homosexuality positive?

Come on people, wake up! It's time to stand together and take whatever steps are necessary to reverse the wickedness that our lethargy has authorized to spawn. Where homosexuality flourishes, all manner of wickedness abounds.

Regardless of what you hear, the militant homosexual agenda isn't rooted in protecting homosexuals from "gay bashing." The agenda is clearly about homosexual activists that include, teachers, politicians, lawyers, Supreme Court judges, and God forbid, even so-called ministers, who are all determined to gain complete equality in our nation and even worse, our world.

Don't allow yourself to be deceived any longer. These activists are not morally upright citizens, concerned about the best interests of our society. They are perverse, self-centered and morally deprived individuals who are spreading their psychological disease into every area of our lives. Homosexual rights activists and those that defend them, are just as immoral as the pedophiles, drug dealers and pimps that plague our communities.

The homosexual agenda is not gaining ground because it is morally backed. It is gaining ground simply because you, Mr. and Mrs. Heterosexual, do nothing to stop it. It is only a matter of time before some of these morally bankrupt individuals such as those involved with NAMBLA, the North American Man/Boy Lovers Association, will achieve their goal to have sexual relations with children and assert that it is a matter of free choice and claim that we are intolerant bigots not to accept it.

If you are reading this and think that this is alarmist, then I simply ask you this: how bad do things have to become before you will get involved? It's time to start taking back what the enemy has taken from you. The safety and future of our children is at stake.

Rev. Stephen Boissoin

Human rights commissions in the news

| | |

I've been gone a week during the sleepiest days of summer, but I remain impressed with the amount of news that human rights commissions continue to generate because of their bad behaviour.

Here's a story from Australia -- it uses Canada's human rights commissions as a case study of how HRCs can actually become abusers of rights. It should be embarrassing to Canadians that we are held up of an international example of how not to do civil rights.

Here's an excellent American summary of my own case, on the popular FrontPage Magazine website.

Stories like those, in media like those, are incredibly important. I haven't blogged a word in a week, but links from those sites have kept my blog traffic at about 3,000 visitors a day. I mention that as evidence that freedom loving people are just plain interested in our awful laboratory experiment with censorship in Canada.

Here's a surprising story in the Canadian Jewish News, typically a mouthpiece for the pro-censorship Canadian Jewish Congress. It's surprising, because it's uncharacteristically even-handed on the subject of HRC censorship, and gives me almost as much ink as it gives the Official Jews who typically support censorship. I'd say that's a small sign of progress.

By far my favourite story, of course, was this one by Joseph Brean in the National Post the other day. Not just because hard news reports about HRCs are very valuable -- I'd trade one news story about HRCs for five opinion columns, in terms of their effectiveness at denormalizing these abusive commissions -- but because this news story is one of the first signs of the anti-HRC backlash spreading.

In this case, Ontario Conservative MPP Lisa MacLeod, pushed for committee hearings to examine the provincial government's nominees for the $160,000/year job of human rights tribunal members. Those are the kangaroo judges that preside over these lawless courts. Needless to say, the combination of such a payday and the nearly unlimited political power that comes with them has attracted quite a field of would-be commissars.

The Post tells the story of one of them: Alan Whyte, a labour lawyer who now wants to stretch his legs in the field of government censorship of news reports. That's right: under questioning from MacLeod, he admits he wants to take on news reports -- news, not opinion; the mere reportage of what goes on in the world -- and to censor stories that don't fit his ideological perspective. (Perhaps Whyte would have liked to have censored the very story that broke that news.) Here are some excerpts from the Post's report:

A candidate for one of the top jobs at the new Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario told a government committee yesterday he thinks print journalism should be subject to racial discrimination complaints.

Alan Whyte, a veteran employer-side labour lawyer, told an all-party panel vetting the two dozen government nominees that he supports the media's broad freedom to report stories "as they see fit."

"Having said that, if there is some sort of discrimination that comes out in the reporting that is arguably contrary to the code, then I would also feel that it would be open to a complainant to challenge the reporting as being discriminatory on the grounds of race," said the candidate for vice-chair.

...Lisa MacLeod, who led the Tory questioning, said in an interview she has been inspired by the recent failed human rights case against Ezra Levant and the Western Standard for publishing the Danish Muhammad cartoons.

"I'm of the opinion that even if I don't like what you have to say, I have to accept it. There's lots of times I don't like what I read, but I'm not the judge of that," she said. "I'm having a real philosophical problem with Barbara Hall recognizing freedom of expression and at the same time telling the media what their responsibility is."

"I wanted to call every single one of [the nominees] in, because if we're going to have a human rights system in Ontario, I think we deserve as Ontarians to know what the individual philosophies are of these tribunal members," she said. Procedural restrictions dictated she could not.

Dear reader, why don't you take just a quick moment to send a word of encouragement to MacLeod. I understand that getting these hearings at all -- the first ever for HRC appointees, anywhere -- were a result of her own work. And her questions generated this excellent news story. Click here to send her an e-mail.

I'll do some more catch-up blogging over the next few days. Before I left, I promised to tell you about two federal cabinet ministers who have come out against the HRCs; and about a stunning development -- another human rights complaint filed against me

Ezra Levant and the "fags hate God" dude

Let's all play!

Only in Canada -- our "Fred Phelps" is an anti-Christian gay guy, whose car is plastered with slogans that would be defined (I believe wrongheadedly) as criminal "hate speech" if it was aimed at, well, gays.

Anyway, Ezra's back from "vacation" -- and has come home to some interesting mail:

It’s not [Rob] Wells’s first time using the CHRC to prosecute his hatred for Christians. They’re a perfect fit for each other, Wells and the CHRC. Wells drives around town, uttering anti-Christian filth; the CHRC staff surf around the Internet, publishing racist and anti-gay filth. (...)

I republished Rev. Boissoin’s column in full, as a sign of my freedom and as an indication that I don’t grant the government the moral authority to tell me what I can or can’t say...

I republished the letter too, as did other bloggers. The Fascist Left's selective outrage is something to behold.

Anyway, I am republishing Rev. Boissoin's letter to the editor again, below. I don't think much of the letter -- it is too, well, "recent Protestant convert" for my tastes, and too jargony.

But my purpose should be obvious: to point out the arbitrary nature and ultimate stupidity of the Human Rights Commissions.

I hereby commit a "hate crime":

Homosexual Agenda Wicked

Media's Obama Crush Flunks Smell Test

I wonder if the highly-educated Obama ever had time to read Philip K. Dick’s “The Prepersons“?

“The whole mistake of the pro-abortion people from the start, he said to himself, was the arbitrary line they drew. An embryo is not entitled to American Constitutional rights and can be killed, legally, by a doctor. But a fetus was a “person”, with rights, at least for a while; and then the pro-abortion crowd decided that even a seven month fetus was not “human” and could be killed, legally, by a licensed doctor. And, one day, a newborn baby - it is a vegetable; it can’t focus its eyes, it understands nothing, not talks… the pro-abortion lobby argued in court, and won, with their contention that a newborn baby was only a fetus expelled by accident or organic processes from the womb. But, even then, where was the line to be drawn finally? When the baby smiled its first smile? When it spoke its first word or reached for its initial time for a toy it enjoyed? The legal line was pushed back and back. And now the most savage and arbitrary definition of all: when it could perform ‘higher math’.” (at age 12)

BEWARE THE "Hillary Harridan!"

WELL, THIS IS ENCOURAGING: "A voting system used in 34 states contains a critical programming error that can cause votes to be dropped while being electronically transferred from memory cards to a central tallying point, the manufacturer acknowledges." There's an obvious solution, of course.

THEY TOLD ME THAT IF GEORGE W. BUSH WERE RE-ELECTED, politically inconvenient videos would vanish down the memory hole. And they were right!

RASMUSSEN: 69% Now Say Controlling the Border More Important than Legalizing Aliens. Not a whole lot to choose from between McCain and Obama here, but this may affect some Congressional races. And isn't it funny that 69% of Americans don't have a Presidential candidate who agrees with them on this issue? Plus this: "Only 14% think the government is doing enough to secure the borders."

I TOLD YOU THAT IT WAS A BAD IDEA for Obama to bring up houses again. "Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?"

Talk about a rapid-fire response! McCain has come out with a new ad, which I assume he's running in the same states where Obama is airing his silly attack on McCain. Here it is, "Housing Problems:"

Obama might want to re-think this line of attack.

Plus, more Rezko reminiscences. "On June 15, 2005, Obama bought a gorgeous house in Hyde Park for $1.65 million - $300,000 below the list price. Rezko bought the empty but attractive lot next door from the same seller at the same time; Obama would later buy part of Rezko's lot, overpaying him. The transaction was shady, but not obviously corrupt. The overall Obama-Rezko relationship looks worse." And now the McCain people have an excuse to bring it up.

But wait, there's more:

Obama is more vulnerable on this stuff than he thinks. Not only because of Rezko but because of Jim Johnson, his former go-to-guy on veeps who was instrumental to the mortgage crisis we have today as Chairman of Fannie Mae.

Indeed.

MORE: The McCain battle plan revealed. Plus this:

You don't want a President who's managed to become rich, do you? So pick Obama, who lives in a hut. No, wait, that's Barack's brother George. Obama lives in... that Chicago house that cost... how much?

It's not just Obama who seems to have lost his mojo. It's the whole staff.

MORE STILL: John Hinderaker: "The truth is that McCain isn't out of touch with 'ordinary people' because he's rich, he's out of touch with his own domestic arrangements because he cares little about material things, and for many years has devoted his extraordinary energies not to enjoying his wife's money, but to serving the American people. Given the number of nights he's spent in hotels or on military bases over the last few years, it's no wonder he hasn't seen much of his wife's condos."

Obama Being Weaned From Teleprompter

August 21st, 2008

From the great “Prowler” at The American Spectator:

Teleprompting Obama

By The Prowler
Published 8/21/2008

According to several Democrat political consultants presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama spent part of his Hawaiian vacation working on weaning himself from a heavy dependence on teleprompters. Even in what are staged as “town hall” events for Obama, remarks are scripted or formatted into bullet points that scroll on teleprompter screens. Obama has had several embarrassing events where the teleprompter either malfunctioned or the screens were not fully visible.

He just locks down and can’t get the words out,” says one political consultant. “For such a fine speaker, it’s really quite remarkable that he’s had issues.”

Obama’s troubles with unscripted moments contributed to his campaign’s refusal to participate in town hall format debates or discussions with Sen. John McCain, who feels much more comfortable in the unscripted moments

This explains a lot.

Though, if the Anointed One is so brilliant at debates, why is he only allowing three of them? During the Democrat primaries they had three a week.

It’s almost as if Mr. Obama is afraid of anyone finding out what he really thinks.

Bad - Really Bad - Move

On the part of the Obama campaign. They chose to attack John McCain for not being able to answer how "houses" McCain owns. Considering the fact that Obama obtained his mansion with the help of convicted felon Tony Rezko, this was a stupid - potentially politically lethally stupid - move on the campaign's part. They have opened the door to a counterpunch over Obama's ties to Rezko.

“Does a guy who… bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?”

–Spokesman Rogers:

Says Obama lives in “a frickin’ mansion” that was “bought in a shady deal with a convicted felon.” Says they will hit harder on Tony Rezko.

People who live in glass mansions might want to heed that old proverb. The full quote from the McCain camp is actually a lot more pointed than the excerpt quoted above:

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said in response: "Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people 'cling' to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?

They may be grabbing media attention with their claims, but the counterattack by McCain is devastating. Up until now they have pretty much kept off of Rezko, even if Hillary did not. But now the forum is a national one, not a Democratic party internecine one. This will backfire on Obama.

By the way, whatever happened to a different kind of politics and promises of change from Obama? Looks like old-style political hardball to me. No hope of change there.

ACORN Watch, Pt II: Obama hid $800,000 payment to ACORN through “Citizen Services, Inc.”

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 22, 2008 11:46 AM

boorg.jpg

There’s much more to the story of Obama’s amended campaign finance reports than what Obama and the Obamedia will tell you. I will fill you in on what’s missing in a moment. What we have here, essentially, is Obama using a non-profit group called Citizens Services Inc. as a front to funnel payments to ACORN for campaign advance work. Obama officials say it’s no big deal. Nothing to see here. Move along. But where there’s left-wing laundering smoke, there’s fire. CSI has been the subject of a little-noticed complaint to the FEC by a Democrat who smelled something rotten going on between CSI, ACORN, and a left-wing 527, Communities Voting Together.

But first, the headline:

Obama to amend report on $800,000 in spending

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has details:

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign paid more than $800,000 to an offshoot of the liberal Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now for services the Democrat’s campaign says it mistakenly misrepresented in federal reports.

An Obama spokesman said Federal Election Commission reports would be amended to show Citizens Services Inc. — a subsidiary of ACORN — worked in “get-out-the-vote” projects, instead of activities such as polling, advance work and staging major events as stated in FEC finance reports filed during the primary.

FEC spokeswoman Mary Brandenberger said it is not unusual for campaigns to amend reports, even regarding large sums of money.

But, said Blair Latoff, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee: “Barack Obama’s failure to accurately report his campaign’s financial records is an incredibly suspicious situation that appears to be an attempt to hide his campaign’s interaction with a left-wing organization previously convicted of voter fraud. For a candidate who claims to be practicing ‘new’ politics, his FEC reports look an awful lot like the ‘old-style’ Chicago politics of yesterday.”

The suspicions are well-placed, as I’ve been detailing ever since starting ACORN Watch.

Jim Terry, spokesman for a group that tracks ACORN, said Citizens Services Inc.’s involvement in the Obama campaign raises bigger questions.

“All of this just seems like an awful lot of money and time spent on political campaigning for an organization that purports to exist to help low-income consumers,” said Terry, chief public advocate for Consumers Rights League, a Washington, D.C., advocacy outfit with a libertarian outlook.

“ACORN has a long and sordid history of employing convoluted Enron-style accounting to illegally use taxpayer funds for their own political gain,” Terry claimed. “Now it looks like ACORN is using the same type of convoluted accounting scheme for Obama’s political gain.”

Are your alarm bells ringing yet?

The Ohio primary was March 4. According to FEC records, the Obama campaign paid Citizens Services Inc. $832,598.29, from Feb. 25 to May 17.

A Trib analysis of campaign finance reports showed Obama paid CSI for services that stood out as unusual. For example, CSI received payments of $63,000 and $75,000 for advance work. Excluding the large payments to CSI, the average amount the Obama campaign spent with other organizations was $558.82 per check on more than 1,200 entries classified as advance work.

Citizens Services Inc. is headquartered at the same address as ACORN’s national headquarters in New Orleans. Citizens Services was established in December 2004 to “assist persons and organizations who advance the interests of low- and moderate-income people,” according to paperwork filed in Louisiana. In a 2006 ACORN publication, Citizen Services Inc. is described as “ACORN’s campaign services entity.”

Separate? Bull:

Regarding CSI’s nonprofit status, Robinson said: “We are organized specifically not to make money, but we make money. There are no profits. We have a staff of 60 people around the country, and that eats up our entire profit. We’re not a for-profit corporation, but we are not a group like a United Way.”

CSI is a “separate organization entirely” from ACORN, he said.

“ACORN is a client of ours,” Robinson said. “ACORN has a lot of different partner organizations. We are a partner, but we are separate.”

Robinson is listed on several Web sites as national deputy political director for campaigns and elections at ACORN. He is also listed as political director at the nonprofit Communities Voting Together and as a consultant at Project Vote. He did not return phone calls or an e-mail request for a follow-up interview.

Money flows back and forth between ACORN, Citizens Services Inc., Project Vote and Communities Voting Together. ACORN posts job ads for Citizens Services and Project Vote. Communities Voting Together contributed $60,000 to Citizens Services Inc., for example, in November 2005, according to a posting on CampaignMoney.com. Project Vote has hired ACORN and CSI as its highest paid contractors, paying ACORN $4,649,037 in 2006 and CSI $779,016 in 2006, according to Terry of the Consumers Rights League.

Photoshop: Blind Mule

And now, let’s dig deeper.

FEC reports show that from February-May 2008, Obama paid $832,598.29 to CSI.

The payments were for:

$310,441.20 25-FEB-08 STAGING, SOUND, LIGHTING
$160,689.40 27-FEB-08 STAGING, SOUND, LIGHTING
$98,451.20 29-FEB-08 TRAVEL/LODGING
$74,578.01 13-MAR-08 STAGING, SOUND, LIGHTING
$18,417.00 28-MAR-08 POLLING
$18,633.60 29-APR-08 STAGING, SOUND, LIGHTING
$63,000.00 29-APR-08 ADVANCE WORK
$105.84 02-MAY-08 LICENSE FEES
$105.84 02-MAY-08 LICENSE FEES
$75,000.00 17-MAY-08 ADVANCE WORK
$13,176.20 17-MAY-08 PER DIEM

Interesting services and payments for a nonprofit that supposedly does simple canvassing work on behalf of low-income people. And now, the Obama campaign is going to wave its magic wand and change those services to get-out-the-vote work? What the…?

For your information: The New Orleans building that houses CSI also houses multiple chapters of ACORN and the SEIU– as well as the 527 group Communities Voting Together.

And for your information: A tipster points to shady business by CSI -detected by Maryland Democrat Al Wynn, of all people. His team, which filed an FEC complaint over the matter, linked several suspicious outfits used by his primary opponent to one address: 1024 Elysian Fields in New Orleans. That’s the address of CSI and ACORN.

In a letter to the FEC, Lori Sherwood, the congressman’s campaign manager, wrote, “Based on my examination of various records and documents I believe the Donna Edwards for Congress Committee has received substantial assistance by way of unreported, in-kind contributions from organizations who profess to have operated independently of the Edwards Campaign.”

In a lengthy complaint, Sherwood claimed that as executive director of the social justice organization the Arca Foundation, Edwards was “responsible for administering and overseeing grants that are awarded and distributed” by the group – grants that go to some of her campaign’s biggest supporters.

“By way of example and not limitation, the Arca Foundation contributed $100,000.00 in grants to the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) from 2004-2006,” Sherwood said.

“That after having been intimately involved in the award of an Arca grant to the LCV, Donna Edwards was appointed to the Board of Directors of the League of Conservation Voters,” she continued. “After receipt of grant money from Ms. Edward’s group and her appointment to the LCV Board, LCV endorsed Donna Edwards for Congress in 2006 and 2008.”

Sherwood goes on to allege that the “LCV and its principals contributed over $15,000.00 to the Edwards campaign through its board members, employees, and the LCV PAC.”

Tip of the iceberg:

Sherwood said the 527 group Communities Voting Together(CTV), which is located at 1024 Elysian Fields in New Orleans, was also the address for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 100, and theaddress of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN),along with the Elysian Fields Corporation.

“Wade Rathke, President of Elysian Fields Corporation is also the chief organizer for SEIU Local 100, founder of ACORN, and a member of the Board of Directors of Tides Center and Tides Foundation,” Sherwood said while alleging that Tides, a social justice network, “received $245,000 ingrant money” from the Arca Foundation from 2002-2006.

She continued, saying, “Donna Pharr is the Custodian of Record for Communities Voting Together, the Assistant Treasurer for ACORN, andDeputy Treasurer for the American Institute for Social Justice and Voting forAmerica, Inc. Both of these organizations received a combined total of $230,000 in grants from Arca between 2003 and 2006.”

Sherwood also said members of the CTV “printed and distributed thousands of handouts attacking Congressman Wynn,” while they also attempted “to hire canvassers to assist the Edwards campaign.”

She continued, saying, “Donna Pharr is the Custodian of Record for Communities Voting Together, the Assistant Treasurer for ACORN, and Deputy Treasurer for the American Institute for Social Justice and Voting for America, Inc.

In addition, Sherwood said she also learned of a relationship between the Edwards [campaign] and another not for profit, Citizens Services, Inc., a Louisiana corporation also claiming the address 1024 Elysian Fields in New Orleans.

“I learned that Citizens Services, Inc. qualified to do business in Maryland as a foreign corporation and gave a registered agent address of 11 East Chase St., in Baltimore,” Sherwood said.

“In checking to verify the address, I learned that there is no record of Citizen Services, Inc. actually having an office in Baltimore,” she added. “According to recent records from the Maryland State Department of Taxation and Assessments Citizens Services, Inc.’s ability to do business in Maryland was forfeited less than 2 months after the 2006 primary.”

Sherwood alleged that the Edwards campaign paid Citizens Services a total of $76,866.80 in three separate payments in a door to door get out the vote effort.

There is at least one other example of suspiciously large payments to Citizens Services, Inc. that call into question what kind of work this non-partisan, non-profit is doing.

See here, where liberal group Ohio Citizen Action notes a $907,808 payment to Citizens Services for canvassing and $590,526.10 for “campaign consulting.” That’s some gold-plated get-out-the-vote and consulting services right there.

The scheme has all the appearances of another left-wing slush fund for Democrat satellites exploiting their non-profit status and skirting campaign finance laws.

The more things Change…

Is this the reason the CHRC ditched Richard Warman? -- In July 2003 Richard Warman filed suit against Jason Ouwendyk and the Northern Alliance claiming he should be awarded damages for defamation (Ottawa Small Claims Court case 03-SC-081720). This case was never heard, because it was stayed, and no money was ever awarded to Richard Warman as a result of him filing this suit.

A year and a half later on December 10, 2004 Mr. Ouwendyk was compelled to file a Consumer Proposal in order to avoid bankruptcy. Like a bankruptcy, in a consumer proposal the filer's creditors each get a portion of what is owed to them through the administration of the Proposal.

On February 3, 2005 Richard Warman signed a witnessed Proof of Claim (scroll down) against Jason Ouwendyk for the amount of $12,550, declaring in this claim that he was owed this money as a result of his filing a defamation suit against Mr. Ouwendyk and the Northern Alliance. The result of this claim was that money that should have gone to Mr. Ouwendyk's other creditors instead went into the pockets of Richard Warman.

Isn't this fraud, or theft by conversion?

DAVID HARSANYI: Let's Chuck the Drinking Age:

What happens when presidents from more than 100 of the nation's best-known colleges call on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18? Well, a brigade of hyperbolic mommies start screaming at them, that's what.

In the Amethyst Initiative, college presidents have offered a rational, if counterintuitive, plan. Let's stop treating young adults like wards of the state. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (naturally) replied: No debate allowed.

There is plenty of empirical evidence suggesting that the drinking age of 21 is counterproductive.

Yes. Read the whole thing. MADD has long since morphed from an anti-drunk-driving organization -- a cause I supported -- to an anti-alcohol organization, a modern Temperance Movement. And we know how that worked out last time.

UPDATE: Reader Richard Fagin emails:

Thanks for the link to David Harsanyi's article on chucking the drinking age. Interestingly, as you noted MADD has become more of a modern day temperance movement than an organization trying to stamp out drunk driving. Along those lines, MADD has been agitating for many years to get the presumptive limit for blood alcohol concentration (BAC) lowered more than it has already. States that want federal highway money are now required to have a BAC limit of 0.08% BAC. This limit was mandated some 20 years ago, after a round in the 1970s of the presumptive limit being lowered to 0.1% from 0.15% BAC. As you would learn in any driving safety course, the risk of being in a traffic accident rises as the driver's BAC increases. What is not emphasized is that the risk increase is hyperbolic: there is a distinct "knee" in the risk curve at about 0.12% BAC. Lowering the presumptive limit to 0.1% did almost all of the good. Further decreases will only criminalize marginally risky conduct. That, I think, is what MADD really has in mind. It's not just get the drunks out from behind the wheel, it's get alcohol out of the car altogether (and every place else, for that matter). As evidence of the latter, I can offer the crusade to have Texas enact open container laws. Until fairly recently, it was perfectly legal to drink (as in consuming alcohol) and drive in Texas, and to have open containers of alcohol in the passenger compartment. It was of course illegal to drive while intoxicated, but that wasn't enough for the prohibitionists. Why penalize responsible passengers unless you're on a crusade?

MADD has become a disgrace.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Debating the drinking age.

Open thread. Joe Biden is Barack Obama’s running mate. Why Biden? And what does he bring to the table? The AP says that Obama sought to balance his ticket with “an older congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues”. Both Obama and Biden are Senators, and neither has held an executive position of any magnitude.

“Biden slowly emerged as Obama’s choice across a long day and night of political suspense as other contenders gradually fell away. … Among those on the short list, Biden brought the most experience in defense or foreign policy — areas in which Obama is rated relatively poorly in the polls compared with Republican Sen. John McCain.”

A Conversation with Philip J. Berg, Esq. (Obama birth certificate lawsuit)

Philip Berg, from what I can tell, is not the stark-raving mad whack-job that people on the American political left are already portraying him to be. In our two discussions, he was rational, he was calm, he was congenial and showed a sense of humor -- something I thought inexistent in most liberals. I'm not afraid to say that I like the guy.

Obama Wants To Shift Tax Burden To Rich

Biden’s nomination allows us to put his VAWA law in a national spotlight.

The Violence Against Women Act of 1994 (VAWA) is a United States federal law. It was passed as Title IV, sec. 40001-40703 of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 HR 3355 and signed as Public Law 103-322 by President Bill Clinton on September 13, 1994. Since that time--through the Office of Violence Against Women at the U.S. Justice Department, and the Administration for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services--VAWA has provided over $4 billion dollars to combat domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault nationwide. The Violence Against Women Act's programs range from policies to encourage the prosecution of abusers, to victim's services to prevention programs. VAWA helped forge new alliances between police officers, courts, and victim advocates.

VAWA was drafted by Senator Joseph Biden's office with support from a number of advocacy organizations including Legal Momentum and The National Organization for Women, which heralded the bill as "the greatest breakthrough in civil rights for women in nearly two decades."

VAWA was reauthorized by Congress in 2000, and again in December 2005. The bill was signed into law by President George W. Bush on January 5, 2006.

VAWA will be up for reauthorization in 2010.

Gun-Crime Solved in Toronto

Toronto, Canada, is about to become the first North American city of over 500,000 inhabitants to become gun-crime free. All it took was the courage and determination of Toronto’s resolute mayor and the farsightedness of the Toronto city council:

In June, city council voted to close down two shooting ranges on city premises — one at the Don Montgomery Community Recreation Centre in Scarborough, the other at Union Station. Following the death of bystander John O’Keefe who was gunned down with a legally registered weapon last winter, Mayor David Miller said, “I don’t think there’s any defence for sport shooters anymore… It’s a hobby that creates danger to others.”
I'll keep this in mind the next time my family and I spend a day at our local gun club, where we'll go though about 200 rounds of .45 auto; 200 rounds of 9mm; 200 rounds of 40 cal.; and about 500 rounds of .22. We will, each and every one of us, drink in the freedom and common sense of Western Canada and thank our lucky stars that we haven't been infected with the strange brain disease that afflicts so many who live in Canada's Toronto shit-pit.

DNC Dispatch: The Planned Parenthood protest; Update: Vid added

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 23, 2008 02:20 PM

Scroll down for updates…vid added…

DENVER — I attended the abortion protest at the new Planned Parenthood mega-facility here in Denver this morning.

The pro-abortion presence was measly. I counted about seven or eight demonstrators who tried to compensate for their low numbers with their loud mouths.

The ignorance of the pro-abort activists is, frankly, astonishing. This woman, Elaine Brower of NY, stood with the small gaggle of pro-Planned Parenthood cheerleaders attacking pro-lifers as racists.

But when asked whether the barbaric eugenics legacy of Planned Parenthood godmother Margaret Sanger bothered her, she told me: “No, I don’t believe that. That’s made up. This has nothing to do with black people.”

Speaking of which: All of the pro-abortion activists I saw were white. Meanwhile, across the street from Planned Parenthood’s palace, I spoke with black and Hispanic mothers who had very strong feelings about abortion. They weren’t there to take part in the protests. They were there because Planned Parenthood had the disgustingly bad taste to build their bloody business right next to a large park and playground. It’s Martin Luther King Jr. Park — and it was filled this morning with families watching their sons practice football:

One of the moms, Priscilla, was angry about the construction of the clinic right across from her neighborhood park and said bluntly: “I don’t want a f**king abortion clinic in my neighborhood!” A Hispanic mother added: “It’s against the Catholic Church.” Someone tell Joe Biden. And another black mother of three I spoke to while sitting in her minivan, when asked about her views on abortion, told me simply: “I don’t believe in it.”

But our tax dollars pay for it.

And you’re a woman-hating racist if you oppose it.

And if you want to make your views known at the DNC, you better be quiet about it.

The People’s Press Collective, an impressive group of Denver-area bloggers who have united to provide multimedia coverage of the circus, caught a Democrat clean-up crew quickly dispatched to scrub away pro-life chalk messages left on the sidewalk at the Pepsi Center yesterday:

The message they didn’t want the public to see:

“True change ends abortion.”

Stay tuned here, at Hot Air, and at the People’s Press Collective for more video.

Update: Here’s vid of the protest. Some of my interview with Priscilla, one of the moms angered by Planned Parenthood’s presence, begins at around 5:39:

Terms of Endearment

When, say, Trent Lott makes a “racially insensitive” remark (even one I happen to believe, despite my noted dislike for Lott, he did not intend), Democrats and the mainstream press depict those comments as a kind of slipping of the mask, behind which lurks the ugly manifestation of a black-hearted racist.

Yet when Joe Biden, Barack Obama’s ubiquitously Brylcreemed VP pick, makes “racially insensitive” remarks of a far less roundabout nature, that, according to NYT reporter John Harwood, is a sign of strength and character — and, best yet, suggests that Biden is at heart just a regular Joe:

He is not somebody who is infused with political correctness, the verbal equivalent of putting his pinkie up when he opens his mouth. So this is what, the way ordinary voters are as well. They’re not always worried about sort of calibrating every single word by “ooh, is this racially insensitive?” That’s something that Joe Biden brings as an asset to the ticket. The gaffes actually show one of his strengths.

Now, it will probably not come as a shock to some of you that I actually agree in part with Harwood: I think that political correctness has done the hard work of shutting down critical speech by allowing those who cannot survive on ideas to in turn thrive on policing the way ideas can “legitimately” be expressed.

But what troubles me about Harwood’s comments is that they are, I’m willing to bet, not the expression of some broad belief in freedom of speech, but rather are a pragmatic rhetorical attempt to rescue Biden from the very kinds of criticisms Harwood would be loath to defend were the target someone like Trent Lott.

– All of which points back to the animating tenet in “liberal” ideology — namely, that, simply by virtue of adopting the left-liberal agenda, one is good, and so his “mistakes” are but minor slip-ups, hiccups in a life of sublime goodliness. Whereas any kind of minor slip-up by those on the “right” (classical liberals included, these days) are to be seen as brief inadvertent flashes revealing their grubby souls — even when those flashes are either admittedly unintended, or else have to be run through a special code book to prove visible to the watchdogs of all that is good and righteous.

BECAUSE OF THE HYPOCRISY!

THAT WAS FAST: Here's a George Obama ad from the Texas GOP. I told you it was a bad idea for the Obama campaign to bring up houses.

The case against socialized medicine

Health care reform may have receded slightly as a campaign issue this year, as focus shifts to even more immediate concerns like the cost of filling our cars with gas. Although a bad employment picture can cost some Americans their health care coverage, it may also be true that the goal of guaranteeing coverage to every American sounds more like a luxury and less like a moral imperative during bad times.

Nonetheless health care reform remains a central issue this year, as it should, given that the election of Barack Obama would likely pave the way for socialized medicine in this country.

In her Sunday Examiner editorial, Sally Pipes demonstrates how tragic this development would be. She does so by comparing the health care outcomes in leading nations that have adopted forms of socialized medicine -- with the accompanying restrictions on access to doctors, hospitals, medical procedures and drugs -- and health care outcomes in the U.S. For example:

According to an August 2008 study published in Lancet Oncology, the renowned British medical journal, Americans have a better than five-year survival rate for 13 of the 16 most prominent cancers when compared with their European and Canadian counterparts.

With breast cancer, for instance, the survival rate among American women is 83.9 percent. For women in Britain, it’s just 69.7 percent. For men with prostate cancer, the survival rate is 91.9 percent here but just 73.7 percent in France and 51.1 percent in Britain.

American men and women are more than 35 percent more likely to survive colon cancer than their British counterparts.

It’s no wonder then that foreign dignitaries living in countries with socialized health care systems routinely come to this country when they need top-flight medical treatment.

When Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi needed heart surgery in 2006, he traveled to the Cleveland Clinic — often considered America’s best hospital for cardiac care. When Canadian Member of Parliament Belinda Stronach, who had denounced a two-tier health care system for Canadians, needed breast cancer surgery herself in 2007, she headed to a California hospital and paid out of pocket.

So much for the “free” health care they could have received at home.

But what about the cost advantages of socialized medicine? According to Pipes, the are "illusory":

True, other developed nations may spend less on health care as a percentage of gross domestic product than the United States does — but so does Sudan. Without considering value, such statistical evaluations are worthless.

And one of the primary reasons health care costs more in America is that we are a wealthy country that demands the best. And, we’re investing a lot more in medical research.

The United States produces over half of the $175 billion in health care technology products purchased globally. In 2004, the federal government funded medical research to the tune of $18.4 billion. By contrast, the European Union — which has a significantly larger population than the United States — allocated funds equal to just $3.7 billion for medical research.

Between 1999 and 2005, the United States was responsible for 71 percent of the sales of new pharmaceutical drugs. The next two largest pharmaceutical markets — Japan and Germany — account for just 4 percent each.

Pipes concludes:

While no one can deny that there are significant problems in the American health care system, overall it provides exceptional value. The ideologues who claim we’d be better off under socialized medicine are massively wrong. Government-run health care has proven to be heartless and uncaring — and the inferior treatments it provides come with a very steep price tag.

Here Come the Crazies!

The Democratic convention is getting underway, and so far the focus has been on all the wrong places. A crowd of demonstrators has showed up, marched around Denver, confronted policemen, and generally made fools of themselves:

r2893326035.jpg

r114700722.jpg

The invaluable Zombie has much more:

I keep wondering when the voters are going to start noticing that the Left has gone stark raving mad.

The world of show business has united almost monolithically behind Barack Obama, but he might want to consider asking Madonna to get off his team. The McCain campaign denounced her yesterday for including in her stage show, which is just beginning a world tour, a video that linked McCain with Adolf Hitler and Robert Mugabe, while grouping Barack Obama with Gandhi, Al Gore and John Lennon.

It remains to be seen how much play the demonstrators will get over the next four days, but the danger to Obama's campaign is real. From the Democrats' perspective, the demonstrators' slogan, "Recreate '68," is ominous. In that year, chaos outside the convention hall--and, to a lesser degree, inside--branded the Democrats the party of weakness and disorder. If the same thing happens this year, neither Obama nor Joe Biden is the sort of candidate to reassure nervous voters.

The other craziness surrounding the convention, of course, involves the Clintons. Bill Clinton is the Democrats' only successful Presidential candidate in the last 32 years. That gives him a unique status in the party, and he and Hillary have made it clear that they don't intend to exit the stage quietly. Here is how Michael Ramirez sees the Dems' convention shaping up:

A number of the Clintons' top advisers are refusing even a pretense of unity and have announced that they will leave Denver without staying for Obama's acceptance speech:

Clinton will deliver her speech Tuesday night. She will hold a private meeting with her top financial supporters Wednesday at noon, and will thank her delegates at an event that afternoon. Former president Bill Clinton will speak that night. Several of Hillary Clinton's supporters are then planning to leave town. Among them, Terry McAuliffe, Clinton's campaign chairman, and longtime supporters Steve Rattner and Maureen White.

Congressional Quarterly thinks the rails may be starting to come off for the Democrats:

The Democratic convention now teeters on the brink of a media disaster thanks to real news that threatens to distract reporters from the scripted show.

And wouldn't you know, it's all about the Clintons. ... With more than enough to fuel the storyline about a rift between Barack Obama and the Clintons on the convention's opening day, the media frenzy is on.

Polls showing restlessness among Clinton voters. Behind-the-scenes reports of arguments about the theme of Bill Clinton's speech later this week. A Wisconsin Clinton delegate endorsing John McCain in a television advertisement. And more.

How did this happen? Many factors are in play. But central to the apparent breakdown was Hillary Rodham Clinton's failure to publicly and forcefully dispel the notion that she was snubbed by Obama's failure to vet her as a running mate.

All of which has the McCain campaign in high spirits. It would, of course, be terrific if the Democratic convention turns into a fiasco, whether because of the the Clintons, the demonstrators, rain on Thursday night, radical speeches from the podium by Jimmy Carter or others, or any combination of the above. But that isn't likely to happen. Once the real event gets going, the television networks will help the Obama campaign get things back on track. Realistically, the best the Republicans can hope for is that Obama's "bounce" from the convention is minimal.

The look usually says, “OH MY GOD!! IT’S THE ANTICHRIST!!!” Wheelspin on launch is optional...

Bender, such laughs have been around for a long time--

In the early eighties, I lived in Seattle with my first wife, and her gay brother ( and he was actually a pretty nice guy, for a fairy... ) and he supplied the rides, since we normally lived on the east coast, and didn't care to drive our van that far.

He had a 1963 Caddy- grey, 389 V-8, six-way power seats, and tooling around Seattle in that thing was a real hoot.

Seattle is at least as mountainous as San Francisco, and going up and down the hills was like riding a 6,000 pound toboggan. Wham! Bam! Thankee M'am!

Even then, Seattle was filling up with moonbats and ecofreaks
( A popular poster in the "U" district was "Nuke South Africa!" )
in their tiny little eco-box cars, and they would hear that thundering and belching behemoth coming, and scatter like doves before a hawk.

On the other hand, when you approached Hispanic hitch-hikers, their faces always lit up, "Man! Here comes a brother! I'm gettin' a ride fer sure!"

No choice for the child.

No choice for the father.

Doesn’t seem pro choice.

You’re absolutely correct.

It’s about selfish control.

And government sanctioned murder.

Even The Mere Threat Of Drilling Will Bring Down The Price Of Oil

It's Unwise To Tax 'Well-Earned' Profits

Random Thoughts (Thomas Sowell)

Republicans won big, running as Republicans, in 2004. But once they took control of Congress, they started acting like Democrats and lost big. There is a lesson in that somewhere but whether Republicans will learn it is another story entirely.

Drilling Boom Revives Hopes for Natural Gas (New drilling technologies)

Energy Policy for the Ignorant

As we've often said, the Democrats prey on ignorance. Often they know better and are being cynical; sometimes it's because they are ignorant themselves. A shocking example of the latter case was revealed yesterday when Nancy Pelosi appeared on Meet the Press. Mrs. Pelosi declared herself a major advocate of natural gas as an energy source, but then revealed that she is ignorant of the fact that natural gas is a fossil fuel.

This wasn't just a slip of the tongue; Pelosi repeated the error several times. From the transcript of her appearance:

BROKAW: Well, I think most people understand that, but at the same time, if we work our way off carbon-based fuels, in the meantime, this is not going to happen overnight.

PELOSI: No, it isn't, but you could -- again, you could reduce the price at the pump immediately with (inaudible). You can have a transition with natural gas. You can have a transition with natural gas. That is cheap, abundant and clean compared to fossil fuels.
***
PELOSI: I'm -- I'm investing in something I believe in. I believe in natural gas as a clean, cheap alternative to fossil fuels.
***
PELOSI: Well, that's not -- that is the marketplace. The fact is, the supply of natural gas is so big, and you do need a transition if you're going to go from fossil fuels, as you say, you can't do it overnight, but you must transition.

These investments in wind, in solar and biofuels and focus on natural gas, these are the real alternatives.

So it's beyond dispute: Nancy Pelosi really does not understand that natural gas is a fossil fuel. This is truly shocking. Pelosi is one of the principal people responsible for setting the nation's energy policy. In the House of Representatives, she has blocked exploration and development of natural gas resources as well as other fossil fuels, thereby raising the price of gasoline at the pump and energy costs across the board. And she has wielded this immense power while being ignorant of the most basic facts about energy. She is not qualified to carry on an intelligent conversation about energy, let alone set the nation's energy policy.

The folks at the Institute for Energy Research have prepared a primer on energy for Mrs. Pelosi's benefit:

Natural gas is colorless, odorless fossil fuel that is prized for its cleanliness and its many uses - including energy. It is produced in much the same way as oil – by drilling for it – and is often produced in conjunction with oil.

Pelosi's ignorance is deadly; she says she is a big booster of natural gas, but she literally fails to understand that to get natural gas we have to drill for it, onshore and off. Hence this exchange yesterday:

BROKAW: Sounds like we’re going to have offshore drilling.

PELOSI: No, no, no.

Nancy Pelosi's ignorance is costing every American money, impairing our economy, depriving us of untold hundreds of thousands of high-paying jobs, and endangering our national security. One wonders how long voters will be willing to put up with Democratic control of Congress.

ACE SAYS I'M WRONG TO DEFEND JOE BIDEN on the plagiarism rap, and cites this David Greenberg piece from Slate. "But the even greater sin was to borrow biographical facts from Kinnock that, although true about Kinnock, didn't apply to Biden. Unlike Kinnock, Biden wasn't the first person in his family history to attend college, as he asserted; nor were his ancestors coal miners, as he claimed when he used Kinnock's words."

Well, that's just plain lying. Perhaps someone will ask him about this.

Exclusive: Advance text of Michelle Obama’s speech; Update: Blogging opening night; latest McCain veep rumors

I have obtained an advance, annotated text of Michelle Obama’s convention speech tonight. As her water-carriers in the press have been reporting, the speech will introduce America to the “real” Michelle and Barack.

(Ok, here’s a bit of the real thing. And the full text is pasted below from Michelle and her brother, Craig Robinson. I was not far off!)

***

Good evening, my fellow Barack Americans!

I am Michelle Obama. (Pause for adulation. Frown at insufficient applause. Wait for more.)

I am just an ordinary working mom from an ordinary town. A “civilian” innocent in the ways of politics. Just like you.

(Well, except for my hard Left thesis-writing skills. And my hard-core Chicago family political ties. And my high-powered, $317,000-a-year affirmative action job. And my role in organizing the Woods Fund panel that Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers and Barack appeared on together.)

Some have referred to me as Obama’s “bitter half.”

But, really, truly, I am so grateful to be here tonight.

(Well, except for all the burdensome sacrifices I have been forced to make throughout this campaign in pursuit of the White House and my victimization at the hands of those wife-beating racist Republicans.)

I have made these inordinate sacrifices because Barack Obama is a real American, a Barack American, just like you.

Except when he’s not like you.

Because He is special. He is The One, my honey, my babies’ daddy, the soul-fixer we have all been waiting for.

Let me repeat: I am just the simple, ordinary, civilian spouse of The One trying to juggle my daughters’ expensive piano and ballet lessons with Access Hollywood interviews and People magazine photo shoots.

But I do know this: We are living in a historic moment, a moment that makes me prouder than any other moment I can recall in my adult lifetime as a citizen of this downright mean great country.

And I know that you need to celebrate his specialness, uniqueness, and everything he represents. You need to. You must.

(Translation: He’s black and if you don’t celebrate, you’re a bigot or a race traitor.)

Barack cares. I care. As an ordinary civilian mom, I share your concerns about access to health care. And so does Barack.

(As for that dump-the-sick policy at the University of Chicago which has enriched Barack’s countless campaign advisers, well, that is a distraction and a conversation that we don’t need to have because it doesn’t help my kids.)

I’ve warned you before and I will warn you again:

“Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your division. That you come out of your isolation. That you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual.”

That is a threat you can believe in.

Now, please join me in raising the Obama salute before I retreat back into my Cone of Protection from criticism for my public comments:

Update

9:31pm Eastern…Ted Kennedy is on stage. “Nothing is going to keep me away from this special gathering tonight.” Plugs universal health care coverage. “Yes, we can.”

Michelle’s prepared text:

As you might imagine, for Barack, running for President is nothing compared to that first game of basketball with my brother Craig.

I can’t tell you how much it means to have Craig and my mom here tonight. Like Craig, I can feel my dad looking down on us, just as I’ve felt his presence in every grace-filled moment of my life.

At six-foot-six, I’ve often felt like Craig was looking down on me too…literally. But the truth is, both when we were kids and today, he wasn’t looking down on me – he was watching over me.

And he’s been there for me every step of the way since that clear February day 19 months ago, when – with little more than our faith in each other and a hunger for change – we joined my husband, Barack Obama, on the improbable journey that’s brought us to this moment.

But each of us also comes here tonight by way of our own improbable journey.

I come here tonight as a sister, blessed with a brother who is my mentor, my protector and my lifelong friend.

I come here as a wife who loves my husband and believes he will be an extraordinary president.

I come here as a Mom whose girls are the heart of my heart and the center of my world – they’re the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning, and the last thing I think about when I go to bed at night. Their future – and all our children’s future – is my stake in this election.

And I come here as a daughter – raised on the South Side of Chicago by a father who was a blue collar city worker, and a mother who stayed at home with my brother and20me. My mother’s love has always been a sustaining force for our family, and one of my greatest joys is seeing her integrity, her compassion, and her intelligence reflected in my own daughters.

My Dad was our rock. Although he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in his early thirties, he was our provider, our champion, our hero. As he got sicker, it got harder for him to walk, it took him longer to get dressed in the morning. But if he was in pain, he never let on. He never stopped smiling and laughing – even while struggling to button his shirt, even while using two canes to get himself across the room to give my Mom a kiss. He just woke up a little earlier, and worked a little harder.

He and my mom poured everything they had into me and Craig. It was the greatest gift a child can receive: never doubting for a single minute that you’re loved, and cherished, and have a place in this world. And thanks to their faith and hard work, we both were able to go on to college. So I know firsthand from their lives – and mine – that the American Dream endures.

And you know, what struck me when I first met Barack was that even though he had this funny name, even though he’d grown up all the way across the continent in Hawaii, his family was so much like mine. He was raised by grandparents who were working class folks just like my parents, and by a single mother who struggled to pay the bills just like we did. Like my family, they scrimped and saved so that he could have opportunities they never had themselves. And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them.

And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children – and all children in this nation – to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.

And as our friendship grew, and I learned more about Barack, he introduced me to the work he’d done when he first moved to Chicago after college. Instead of heading to Wall Street, Barack had gone to work in neighborhoods devastated when steel plants shut down, and jobs dried up. And he’d been invited back to speak to people from those neighborhoods about how to rebuild their community.

The people gathered together that day were ordinary folks doing the best they could to build a good life. They were parents living paycheck to paycheck; grandparents trying to get by on a fixed income; men frustrated that they couldn’t support their familie s after their jobs disappeared. Those folks weren’t asking for a handout or a shortcut. They were ready to work – they wanted to contribute. They believed – like you and I believe – that America should be a place where you can make it if you try.

Barack stood up that day, and spoke words that have stayed with me ever since. He talked about “The world as it is” and “The world as it should be.” And he said that all too often, we accept the distance between the two, and settle for the world as it is – even when it doesn’t reflect our values and aspirations. But he reminded us that we know what our world should look like. We know what fairness and justice and opportunity look like. And he urged us to believe in ourselves – to find the strength within ourselves to strive for the world as it should be. And isn’t that the great American story?

It’s the story of men and women gathered in churches and union halls, in town squares and high school gyms – people who stood up and marched and risked everything they had – refusing to settle, determined to mold our future into the shape of our ideals.

It is because of their will and determination that this week, we celebrate two anniversaries: the 88th anniversary of women winning the right to vote, and the 45th anniversary of that hot summer day when Dr. King lifted our sights and our hearts with his dream for our nation.

I stand here today at the crosscurrents of that history – knowing that my piece of the American Dream is a blessing hard won by those who came before me. All of them driven by the same conviction that drove my dad to get up an hour early each day to painstakingly dress himself for work. The same conviction that drives the men and women I’ve met all across this country:

People who work the day shift, kiss their kids goodnight, and head out for the night shift – without disappointment, without regret – that goodnight kiss a reminder of everything they’re working for.

The military families who say grace each night with an empty seat at the table. The servicemen and women who love this country so much, they leave those they love most to defend it.

The young people across America serving our communities – teaching children, cleaning up neighborhoods, caring for the least among us each and every day.

People like Hillary Clinton, who put those 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling, so that our daughters – and sons – can dream a little bigger and aim a little higher.

People like Joe Biden, who’s never forgotten where he came from, and never stopped fighting for folks who work long hours and face long odds and need someone on their side again.

All of us driven by a simple belief that the world as it is just won’t do – that we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be.

That is the thread that connects our hearts. That is the thread that runs through my journey and Barack’s journey and so many other improbable journeys that have brought us here tonight, where the current of history meets this new tide of hope.

That is why I love this country.

And in my own life, in my own small way, I’ve tried to give back to this country that has given me so much. That’s why I left a job at a law firm for a career in public service, working to empower young people to volunteer in their communities. Because I believe that each of us – no matter what our age or background or walk of life – each of us has something to contribute to the life of this nation.

It’s a belief Barack shares – a belief at the heart of his life’s work.

It’s what he did all those years ago, on the streets of Chicago, setting up job training to get people back to work and afterschool programs to keep kids safe – working block by block to help people lift up their families.

It’s what he did in the Illinois Senate, moving people from welfare to jobs, passing tax cuts for hard working families, and making sure women get equal pay for equal work.

It’s what he’s done in the United States Senate, fighting to ensure the men and women who serve this country are welcomed home not just with medals and parades, but with good jobs and benefits and health care – including mental health care.

That’s why he’s running – to end the war in Iraq responsibly, to build an economy that lifts every family, to make health care available for every American, and to make sure every child in this nation gets a world class education all the way from preschool to college. That’s what Barack Obama will do as President of the United States of America.

He’ll achieve these goals the same way he always has – by bringing us together and reminding us how much we share and how alike we really are. You see, Barack doesn’t care where you’re from, or what your background is, or what party – if any – you belong to. That’s not how he sees the world. He knows that thread that connects us – our belief in America’s promise, our commitment to our children’s future – is strong enough to hold us together as one nation even when we disagree.
It was strong enough to bring hope to those neighborhoods in Chicago.

It was strong enough to bring hope to the mother he met worried about her child in Iraq; hope to the man who’s unemployed, but can’t afford gas to find a job; hope to the student working nights to pay for her sister’s heal th care, sleeping just a few hours a day.

And it was strong enough to bring hope to people who came out on a cold Iowa night and became the first voices in this chorus for change that’s been echoed by millions of Americans from every corner of this nation.

Millions of Americans who know that Barack understands their dreams; that Barack will fight for people like them; and that Barack will finally bring the change we need.

And in the end, after all that’s happened these past 19 months, the Barack Obama I know today is the same man I fell in love with 19 years ago. He’s the same man who drove me and our new baby daughter home from the hospital ten years ago this summer, inching along at a snail’s pace, peering anxiously at us in the rearview mirror, feeling the whole weight of her future in his hands, determined to give her everything he’d struggled so hard for himself, determined to give her what he never had: the affirming embrace of a father’s love.

And as I tuck that little girl and her little sister into bed at night, I think about how one day, they’ll have families of their own. And one day, they – and your sons and daughters – will tell their own children about what we did together in this election. They’ll tell them how this time, we listened to our hopes, instead of our fears. How this time, we decided to stop doubting and to start dreaming.

How this time, in this great country – where a girl from the South Side of Chicago can go to college and law school, and the son of a single mother from Hawaii can go all the way to the White House – we committed ourselves to building the world as it should be.

So tonight, in honor of my father’s memory and my daughters’ future – out of gratitude to those whose triumphs we mark this week, and those whose everyday sacrifices have brought us to this moment – let us devote ourselves to finishing their work; let us work together to fulfill their hopes; and let us stand together to elect Barack Obama President of the United States of America.

Thank you, God bless you, and God bless America.

EMBARGOED UNTIL DELIVERY

Remarks of Craig Robinson-as prepared for delivery
Democratic National Convention
Denver, Colorado
Monday, August 25, 2008

Good evening, I’m Craig Robinson and Michelle Obama is my little sister.

Tonight, I don’t want to just introduce my sister, I want to introduce you to my sister. The girl I grew up with. The poised young woman I saw her grow in to. The compassionate mother, aunt and sister- in-law she is. The passionate voice for women and children she has become. And the type of first lady she will be.

Sometimes, when I look at the woman you are about to hear from, it’s funny to think that this is the same person who used to wake me up early, and I mean early, on Christmas morning - because we both had to be up at the same time, in order to open our presents.

This is the person who would play the piano to calm me down before all of my big games in high school.

This is the person who - even though we were allowed only one hour of television a night - somehow managed to commit to memory every single episode of the Brady Bunch.

But when I really think back, I can also see how the person she is today, was formed in the experiences we shared growing up: working hard, studying hard, having parents who wanted more for us than what they had. And always being reminded that in this country of all countries – those things were possible.

Neither of our parents went to college.

My father went to work right out of high school to help pay for his brother’s college tuition.

He worked at the water filtration plant for 30 years.

We lost my father in 1991.

And I know he’s looking down on us tonight, so proud of his daughter, not because of who she married, though he was a big fan of Barack – but because of the hard-working, brilliant woman she is, what she’s accomplished in her own right, the mother she’s become, and the values she’s instilled in her daughters.

My mother Marian is here tonight. She remains our family’s anchor, and the sole reason Michelle was willing to campaign at all was because she knows that Mom is there to help take care of the girls.

When we were young kids, our parents divided the bedroom we shared so we could each have our own room.

Many nights we would talk when we were supposed to be sleeping.

My sister always talked about who was getting picked on at school, or who was having a tough time at home.

I didn’t realize it then - but I realize it now - those were the people she was going to dedicate her life to: the people who were struggling with life’s challenges.

She has continued to follow that passion. She gave up a job in a big law firm to work in her community. With a group called Public Allies, she trained a new generation of community leaders.

She developed the University of Chicago’s community service center - connecting the university to the neighborhood that was blocks away - but often worlds away - from its gates.

< div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-autospace:none">And when I wasn’t happy doing what I was doing - investment banking - she was the one who encouraged me to go back to my first love - teaching and coaching.

And today I’m proud to be the coach of the Oregon State men’s basketball team. Go Beavs!

But she did take something away from that first big law firm job. A young lawyer by the name of Barack Obama.

My sister had grown up hearing my father and me talk about how to judge a person’s character by wha t type of sportsman they are, so she asked me to take Barack to play basketball.

If you’re looking for a political analysis based on his playing, here it is: he’s confident but not cocky, he’ll take the shot if he’s open, he’s a team player who improves the people around him, and he won’t back down from any challenge.

Together, I’ve watched Barack and Michelle strengthen each other. I’ve watched them create a home filled with love, and grounded in faith.

During challenging times I’ve watched Michelle and Barack stand by each other. And I know, they’ll stand by you — the American people=2 0– now and in the future.

So please join me in welcoming an impassioned public servant, a loving daughter, wife and mother, my little sister and our nation’s next first lady: Michele Obama.

End

Representative Brown told First Coast News she still stands behind her comments that ignited a firestorm in Washington.

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives censured Brown after a shouting match on the House floor Thursday night.

The argument started during a debate over HR-4818. The bill would provide international monitoring of the November presidential election. Congress has been considering an outside monitor due to all the confusion over the last election, and the “hanging chads” in Florida.

Representative Brown said, “I come from Florida, where you and others participated in what I call the United States coup d’etat. We need to make sure that it doesn’t happen again. Over and over again after the election when you stole the election, you came back here and said get over it. No we’re not going to get over it and we want verification from the world.”

Denver ‘Protestors’: Kill Michelle Malkin!

August 26th, 2008

From the Denver DNC Convention last night, via the Peoples Press Collective and YouTube:

Michelle Malkin was attacked by protesters and conspiracy nut Alex Jones during the “Shake Your Money Maker” event while Recreate68 attempted to levitate the Denver Mint. Another protester began shouting “Kill Michelle Malkin.”

The only surprise here is that this gentleman was outside the convention center.

He sounds like he should be a Democrat Super Delegate.

By the way, here are some further details from the Associated Press on the main event of the evening from those hard-headed revolutionaries of “Recreate 68″:

Activists try to ‘levitate’ Denver Mint

By CATHERINE TSAI, The Associated Press
2008-08-26

DENVER - Several dozen anti-war activists held hands and shouted “Love, Peace and Justice” during a stunt to “levitate” the Denver Mint on Monday, shake out its money and redistribute the wealth.

The group Recreate 68 wanted to circle the Mint on the opening day of the Democratic National Convention in homage to the 1967 protest of the Vietnam War when demonstrators sought to levitate the Pentagon.

In truth, protesters at the Mint only made it halfway down one block, the quarters that showered the ground were made of plastic, and the group’s leader wore a starry, purple wizard’s hat and red robe.

“It’s just an old Halloween costume,” Mark Cohen of Recreate 68 said afterward.

Earlier, he and Aron Kay, the 58-year-old New York protester known for throwing pies in public officials’ faces, shouted, “Be well, be healthy,” in Yiddish as plastic quarters hit the ground.

Kay wore a silver cape, gray sweatpants and a black T-shirt that said, “Arrest Bush.”

A tense moment occurred when a man spotted conservative columnist Michelle Malkin and started yelling at her. Malkin calmly kept doing her work, taking pictures with a camera.

Police estimated 75 activists attended the event. About a dozen officers on horseback and a dozen more on foot lined the sidewalks, keeping watch.

The stunt was just one event Priscilla Lynch of Conway, Mass., took part in as a member of the anti-war group Codepink. “I’m here to do whatever I can to bring peace and justice to our country,” she said, as Cohen cheerily waved a magic wand in the distance.

Who knows? Maybe that will be what makes a difference,” she said.

(Thanks to Texaspsue for the heads up on the Malkin angle and BillK on the levitation piece.)

RASMUSSEN: Obama drops three points on start of Democratic Convention. "Obama’s support has declined in each of the last three individual nights of polling. This may be either statistical noise or a reaction to the selection of Biden."

MEGAN MCARDLE: "According to Nielsen, none of you are watching the conventions. An even lower none than in 2004, which was itself a dramatic decline from the lackluster ratings of 2000." So is it the conventions themselves, or the tiredness of the network coverage?

UPDATE: A good question from Ed Driscoll: "Why watch it on TV when there’s wall-to-wall Blogosphere coverage—particularly firsthand reporting of the action outside the hall?"

Good point. Here's some of that.

Figures. Michelle Obama Quotes Lines From "Rules For Radicals" In Her DNC Convention Speech

What to make of Michelle Obama's use the terms, “The world as it is” and “The world as it should be?” From whence do they originate? Try Chapter 2 of Saul Alinsky’s book, Rules for Radicals. In last night's speech, Michelle Obama said something that peeked my curiousity. She said:

"Barack stood up that day," talking about a visit to Chicago neighborhoods, "and spoke words that have stayed with me ever since. He talked about “The world as it is” and “The world as it should be..."

And, "All of us driven by a simple belief that the world as it is just won’t do – that we have an obligation to fight for the world as it should be."
Here’s an excerpt from Chapter 2 of Saul Alinsky’s book, Rules for Radicals:

"The means-and-ends moralists, constantly obsessed with the ethics of the means used by the Have-Nots against the Haves, should search themselves as to their real political position. In fact, they are passive — but real — allies of the Haves…The most unethical of all means is the non-use of any means... The standards of judgment must be rooted in the whys and wherefores of life as it is lived, the world as it is, not our wished-for fantasy of the world as it should be."
IIRC, those same words appear in Hillary’s speech at school.
