Ezra is live blogging as well. Well worth the read. From what I have seen, the plaintiffs are profoundly incompetant buffoons. The whole tribunal is a pig-show, a farce.

Rippin: “I don’t think [Steyn] actually wants to simply fear Muslims. What he argues quite clearly is big government taking away our adult independence… and are no longer able to stand up against wobbling fromage of cultural relativism, which is a phrase I absolutely love. His critique is a critique of Euro-American society.”

Whoa! The man grokked the central point of Steyn’s book. Pretty good for an academic.

I have now put a piece up on the My Telegraph site:

Islam v Free Speech in Canada: the Marsupial Trial

Posted by James Wolfe at 22:46 on 03 Jun 2008

Islam v Free Speech in Canada: the Trial in the Court of Marsupials

In October, 2006, Maclean’s magazine published an excerpt from Mark Steyn’s book, ‘America Alone’, entitled ‘The future belongs to Islam’. The piece dealt with the threat faced by North American institutions and values from Islam showing, amongst other things, how the shift in demographics in Western Europe will lead to a domination by Muslims , by way of immigration and birth rates, of other religions.

A group of Muslim law students in Toronto demanded that Maclean’s publish a rebuttal, drafted by them and not subject to any editorial control by the magazine. Maclean’s refused. The matter was than taken up by Mohamed Elmasry and Naiyer Habib of the Canadian Islamic Congress (CIC). They complained to the Federal, Ontario (where Maclean’s is located) and the British Columbia human rights authorities.

The basis of CIC’s complaint is that the article breached the provisions of the BC Human Rights Code (in addition to those in the other jurisdictions) in that it subjected Habib to discrimination based on his religion and exposed him to hatred.

The trial, or hearing, opened yesterday in Vancouver. Canadians have been fortunate in having the attendance of Andrew Coyne, Maclean’s national editor, who has been blogging up to the minute on a Blackberry from the tribunal courtroom. As he has been blogging, so have the subscribers to Maclean’s been commenting. It is a blend of humour, pathos and extreme concern for the contempt of Law and the heinous attack on Free Speech.

I have a lot of time for Coyne. He has a quick and sharp mind, is not selective or impartial when it comes to political commentary and he is one of Canada’s better journalists.

I shall post below a link to Mark Steyn’s article and one to Andrew Coyne’s blog

Mike Brock breaks radio silence: The Lying Jackal's Friend is a Liar. Who Would Have Thought?.

...It's important for every reader of this to realize, that Awan has essentially corroborated Maclean's side of the story, and taken a giant proverbial shit on the story he's been telling over and over again to Canadians through the media.

He's even admitted, under oath, that he was seeking a shakedown of cash from Macleans in the order of $10,000.  Which is, once again, completely contrary to the story and bullshit he's been selling.

When assholes like Awan are the ones calling for limits on free speech, it reaffirms just how important free speech is.  It protects us from the fascism that his likes would unleash on society, given power of the state to enforce his viewpoint to the peril of all others.

Awan lied to my face, in a room filled with people.  He belittled my "simplistic" view of free speech.  He commands no respect with me.  In fact, he can kiss my ass.

From the “I hope to God they are flat wrong department”, here is the abstract of a short paper on recent solar trends by William Livingston and Matthew Penn of the National Solar Observatory in Tucson. It was sent to me by reader Mike Ward.
Add that to THIS, and one has got to feel at least a tad concerned:
Solar Cycle 20 was slightly longer than average at 11.6 years. The average solar cycle length from 1643 to 1996 is 11.4 years. Now that Dr Svalgaard has mentioned it, let’s talk about Solar Cycle 21. It was short at 10.3 years and hot (it started at the same time as the PDO shift in 1976) and was followed by a solar cycle 22 which was shorter again at 9.6 years and hotter. According to Friis-Christensen and Lassen theory, Solar Cycle 23 should have been hotter than Solar Cycle 22, and it was, even thought it is going to be a long one at about 13 years. There is plenty of correlation, all in our lifetimes. As for the physics, Hathaway found a correlation between Solar Cycle Length and the amplitude of the following cycle.

Ten to fifteen years from now we may find ourselves wishing ... nay begging, for the good'ol days of global warming.

Real world…It’s getting colder.

temperature

Combined with no sunspots this is not good news.

Climate change - as opposed to the consensus about global warming - does not go in one direction. A warmer planet would not be grand but we could deal with it. A colder planet, on the other hand would mean millions of very marginal people would die.

Those freezing winters of our youth were years where the grain harvests in Saskatchewan were maybe 50% of what they are today.

I would love the warmists to be a little bit wrong…the shark has jumped after all. But I pray to God that they are not entirely insane. ‘Cause if they are we are in for a Little Ice Age and that will be fatal to millions.

I pay about $10 per carton by making them myself (MYO). The question is where do we go from here…This has been a long campaign. And I will be making no decision tonight. But this has always been your campaign. To the 18 million who voted for me…I wanna hear from you.” Hillary tears up…10:12pm Eastern. Obama takes the stage. Does he know where he is tonight?

While the night wears on and the re-deification of the Obamessiah gets underway, let’s revisit that MSM ogling video to give you a taste of what’s to come:

***

Definitely a two-popcorn bag night if you’re a political junkie. It’s the final Democrat primary night of the campaign season. Polls close in South Dakota at 9pm Eastern and in Montana at 10 pm. The scene is set for Hillary’s farewell.

With grace or gritted teeth?

Expect a strained mixture of both–with a large dash of “I am Woman, Hear Me Roar.”

As for those VP rumors, I’m not buying it.

Meanwhile, Obama gets ready to party.

And via Drudge, McCain will attempt to grab some of the spotlight with an Iraq speech exhorting against Bush and Obama:

You will hear from my opponent’s campaign in every speech, every interview, every press release that I’m running for President Bush’s third term. You will hear every policy of the President described as the Bush-McCain policy. Why does Senator Obama believe it’s so important to repeat that idea over and over again? Because he knows it’s very difficult to get Americans to believe something they know is false. So he tries to drum it into your minds by constantly repeating it rather than debate honestly the very different directions he and I would take the country. But the American people didn’t get to know me yesterday, as they are just getting to know Senator Obama. They know I have a long record of bipartisan problem solving. They’ve seen me put our country before any President — before any party — before any special interest — before my own interest. They might think me an imperfect servant of our country, which I surely am. But I am her servant first, last and always. ….

I disagreed strongly with the Bush administration’s mismanagement of the war in Iraq. I called for the change in strategy that is now, at last, succeeding where the previous strategy had failed miserably. I was criticized for doing so by Republicans. I was criticized by Democrats. I was criticized by the press. But I don’t answer to them. I answer to you. And I would be ashamed to admit I knew what had to be done in Iraq to spare us from a defeat that would endanger us for years, but I kept quiet because it was too politically hard for me to do. No ambition is more important to me than the security of the country I have defended all my adult life.

Also look for more McCain-Hillary kissy-kissy.

Currently showing on the McCain campaign website:

Update: 8:42pm Eastern. Right on cue, McCain praises Hillary for inspiring him. “I’m proud to call her my friend.”

Update 9:03pm Eastern. McCain still talking and plodding along. Fox is the only one of the networks still carrying the speech. It’s pedestrian–and even McCain seems to have lost interest in his text. He read a line about Obama making a good first impression, and the audience inexplicably laughed. Did I miss something?

Update 9:10pm Eastern. It’s done and he seems relieved. Join the club.

Update 9:25pm Eastern. Mark Levin on McCain:

Not to offend those who might be offended, but this speech is a mash and tough to digest. You have to get through the self-congratulatory praise of independence and commander-in-chief pose from the Senate, then you have to try to follow the inconsistency of some of his big-government ideas vs. his anti-big-government rhetoric, and his inconsistency even on his supposed strength — the surge in Iraq vs. closing GITMO and conferring additional rights on the detainees. I am also put off by some of the anti-Bush stuff. Distancing himself from Bush is one thing, but he almost exclusively (as best I can tell) criticizes him, giving Bush little credit (tax cuts, Supreme Court appointments and yes, the surge, which Bush ordered not McCain).

Update 9:36pm Eastern. Hillary takes the stage. Hillary congratulates Obama. “Our party and our democracy is stronger and more vibrant as a result…It has been an honor to contest these primaries…it is an honor to call him my friend…take a moment to recognize him and all his supporters for all they have accomplished…”

Thirty seconds into the speech, she whips out the gender pride/gender card. Thanks all the little girls and old women who supported her. Thirty-five seconds in, she delivers a website plug for hillaryclintondotcom.

She’s very mellow (for Hillary). Wonder if she had a drink before she took the stage.

YES, WE CAN! chants break out. She tells her supporters every vote they cast was a “prayer” for this country. She’s proud they stood their ground. 35 million people voted in the primary. “I’m committed to uniting the party.”

“None of you is invisible to me. I see you. I’ll keep fighting for you.”

“A lot of people are asking, ‘What does Hillary want?’ I want what I’ve always wanted in this campaign. I want to end the war. I want health care for all Americans. I want the nearly 18 million Americans who voted for me to be respected, to be heard…I have an old-fashioned notion…that public service is about helping people solve their problems and live their own dreams…This nation has given me every opportunity and that’s what I want for every single American.”

A small dig: “I’ve been working on these issues not just for the past 16 months, but for the past 16 years.”

Pats herself on the back for demagoging the subprime crisis.

Hillary rallies her troops with memories of campaign successes. “I will carry your stories and dreams with me every day for the rest of my life. The question is where do we go from here…This has been a long campaign. And I will be making no decision tonight. But this has always been your campaign. To the 18 million who voted for me…I wanna hear from you.” Plugs the website again. “In the coming days, I’ll…determine how to move forward. “I want to conclude tonight by saying thank you, thank you to the people across America.”

Huge roar of applause. Bill Clinton clapping from the sidelines.

Hill’s eyes are leaking.

9:55pm Eastern. Hillary ends with a heart-tugging health care anecdote about an elderly supporter she met.

But is it true?

Cackle count: Zero.

Update 10:12pm Eastern. Obama is in St. Paul. He gets it right. He thanks everyone, his staff, his wife, his daughters…and his grandmother “who’s somewhere in Hawaii…who poured everything she had into me…this is for her.”

Everything?

“Tonight, after fifty-four hard-fought contests, our primary season has finally come to an end.” Huge applause.

“Tonight, I can stand before you and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for President of the United States.” Massive applause/chanting.

Obama’s salute to Hillary:

At this defining moment for our nation, we should be proud that our party put forth one of the most talented, qualified field of individuals ever to run for this office. I have not just competed with them as rivals, I have learned from them as friends, as public servants, and as patriots who love America and are willing to work tirelessly to make this country better. They are leaders of this party, and leaders that America will turn to for years to come.

That is particularly true for the candidate who has traveled further on this journey than anyone else. Senator Hillary Clinton has made history in this campaign not just because she’s a woman who has done what no woman has done before, but because she’s a leader who inspires millions of Americans with her strength, her courage, and her commitment to the causes that brought us here tonight.

Snarky Obama jabs McCain:

In just a few short months, the Republican Party will arrive in St. Paul with a very different agenda. They will come here to nominate John McCain, a man who has served this country heroically. I honor that service, and I respect his many accomplishments, even if he chooses to deny mine.

Can’t make it through all the cliches. Agh. Here’s the full text if you must know what the teleprompter was scrolling for Obama.

Show Trial (CHRC vs. Mark Steyn) - David Warren

COMMENTARY

Show trial - June 4th Commentary

The writings of Canada’s most talented journalist, Mark Steyn, went on trial in Vancouver on Monday, in a case designed to challenge freedom of the press. It is a show trial, under the arbitrary powers given to Canada’s obscene “human rights” commissions, by Section 13 of our Human Rights Act.

I wrote “obscene” advisedly. Before Canada’s “human rights” tribunals, a respondent has none of the defences formerly guaranteed in common law. The truth is no defence, reasonable intention is no defence, nor material harmlessness, there are no rules of evidence, no precedents, nor case law of any kind. The commissars running the tribunals need have no legal training, exhibit none, and owe their appointments to networking among leftwing activists.

I wrote “show trial” advisedly, for there has been a 100 percent conviction rate in cases brought to “human rights” tribunals under Section 13.

Take this in:

A group of Islamist fanatics, claiming to speak for every Muslim in Canada, charged Maclean’s magazine with “spreading hatred against Muslims” for having printed a lucid and reasonable (if controversial) excerpt from Steyn’s bestselling book, America Alone. This is a news story that should be on the front page of every newspaper in Canada, every day until it is resolved.

Everything about this case stinks to high heaven. It was brought before three different “human rights” tribunals simultaneously. The British Columbian venue was openly “jurisdiction shopped” because the province’s human rights tribunals have an especially egregious record for ignoring respondents’ most basic charter rights. The charges were brought more than a year after the article appeared. There was an open attempt at extortion, when representatives of the complainant called a press conference in which an offer was made to retract the charges for unspecified considerations. And so on: a layering of affronts to the most elementary standards of justice and decency.

The case is the more ludicrous because the allegations brought are semi-literate (for instance, Steyn’s quotations of lunatic Islamist imams are confused with Steyn’s own assertions). The remedies sought keep changing; the arguments keep changing; the explanation of why the complainant has brought the case and what he hopes to gain from it has kept changing. And now the show trial has begun, the prosecution is presenting a parade of entirely irrelevant testimony. (Has Steyn properly understood the Koran? Etc.)

A farce, but a farce that has huge consequences for Canada: for by such methods free speech and free press are being snuffed out. The Left may think they have found the ideal method to silence anyone who challenges their insane, “politically correct” ideas, but have instead created a monster that can as easily eat them next.

This is a disaster also for Canada’s Muslims, for the views of fanatical Islamists are being presented as representative of them all. No single person has done so much to advance contempt for Islam in this country as Mohamed Elmasry, president of the “Canadian Islamic Congress,” the complainant in this case -- whose public assertions have included e.g. the view that every Israeli citizen is a valid target for Palestinian hitmen.

The bland acceptance of this jackass, by mainstream Canadian media, as the definitive spokesman for Muslim interests in Canada, cannot be blamed on the Muslim community. Innumerable Muslims have disavowed him, and yet are entirely ignored. Indeed: Mark Steyn has been among the few journalists distinguishing between camps. He would be: for he has plenty of Muslim supporters.

There is some good news. It appears the Harper government has finally been goaded into calling a public inquiry into proceedings of at least the federal “human rights” commission. Some good may come from public confirmation of the outrageous, often sick behaviour of its members and hangers-on -- which Canada’s leading bloggers have been documenting.

But the problem is at once more urgent and much broader than any carefully-focused inquiry can present. For what radical activists have achieved through “human rights” commissions is now endemic, in all kinds of “star chamber” and “kangaroo court” operations, in everything from the tax system to provisions of family law.

Another crucial point:

While media attention to Mark Steyn’s show trial is inadequate (it is getting more attention in the United States than up here), it is nevertheless the best publicized case ever to come before our “human rights” bureaucracies. Most of the victims of these neo-Maoist tribunals have been “little people,” with nothing like the resources Maclean’s magazine has put in play to defend itself and Steyn, and no media reporting whatever. They have been persecuted, stripped of their livelihoods and savings, demonized among their neighbours, made to endure humiliating “re-education” programmes -- without lawyers, without assistance of any kind -- all for exercising rights that any Canadian would have taken for granted a mere generation ago.

I want justice for Mark Steyn. But I also want justice for all these little people, who have been crushed under the jackboot of “political correction.”

On the assumption that you even do support us, if you are trying to figure out when to speak out, where to speak out, or how to speak out on such a vital issue to the future of this country, then I say in all honesty and sincerity: there’s something wrong with you.

Before anything else, you are supposed to be defending our freedoms and real Canadian values - values that were bought and paid for on the fields of Flanders not the manufactured ones that serve the perpetually aggrieved communities to which your government is shamelessly pandering. At the very least, you should not be siding with the fraudulent thugs at the HRCs and the fools in your own Department who say that “truth is no defense”. Whatever trick you’re using to sleep at night as Canadian citizens are being financially and emotionally raped and pillaged by these Star Chamber Tribunals would give Somenex a good run for its money, I have no doubt.

Be sure to ask how it came to pass that an individual is considered a "public official" obligated to set aside their Charter rights when performing a state function - but a "private citizen" on the hook for their own legal defense when set up for a human rights sting operation?

Every marriage commissioner (or any other public official) in the province should be thinking long and hard right now about their own personal exposure. Poligamy hasn't yet been tested in the courts in regards to charter rights - would it be prudent in this legal atmosphere to refuse a ceremony joining a man and his second husband?

Viva La Revolucion!!!
by Johnny Venom

I am so pumped right now! Ok ok...I've been excited for a while now. Barack Obama will be the Democratic Party's nominee! History, my fellow Kossacks, is being made! Forgive me if I sound presumptuous for I feel in my heart that we finally can start our move forward. I have respect for Hillary, she gave a good fight and at the end of the day hold our respect, she is still one of ours. But the primaries are over, and this evening history is being made. Tonight we start our revolution to take it back!

Tonight we start the move to remove the superstitious theocratic policies of the Religious Reich!

Tonight we start to take back the environment from those who don't give a damn about the planet!

Live from the BC Kangaroo Court aka Human Rights Commission

Stay tuned with live blog updates from Ezra Levant and Andrew Coyne on Day II of freedom of speech being contested by Muslim plaintiffs.

Read up for some history on the case and on the western principles of freedom of the press and freedom of speech in my article "Human Rights Regression". Also, be sure to visit Free Mark Steyn to donate, stay updated, and contribute.

The most basic of freedoms is being tried by an illegitimate quasi-judicial body with no rules of evidence, standing, or ripeness. The very body which, in name, is supposed to protect our basic freedoms has acted, and may act again as a means of state censorship.

This is a travesty and a tragedy for our democratic system, but perhaps a righteous ending will yet result.

How can this unbelievable farce be allowed to continue another single day? It's not good enough to fire them all. They must be fully prosecuted, publicly humiliated and incarcerated for a good long time.
To think that these guys get paid OVER $100,000 a year
(  Kangaroo Courts pay well . . $183k )
by the taxpayers to rob Canadians of their free speech rights is beyond belief!

May every village on the planet be blessed with an Ezra Levant, The Righteous Man, who won't be cowered. It's breathtaking watching tribunal toady Ian Fine wither under the avalanche of damning facts. He's got a whimpering demeanor.

We are doomed as a free society if we don't shut down as we find it all manner of USSR style state thuggery, and, there is nothing operating in North America as smarmy and totalitarian as the CHRC's. This is not just a Canadian problem. That idiot Bill Richardson set up one of these kanagaroo courts in my old state.

Day Three

"10:55 AM They’re back, and they’ve decided they’re going to hear her evidence. Buffy scholars everywhere breathe a sigh of relief."

Update: Let there be no mistake about the larger goal here:

"We anticipate that success in this case will provide the impetus for prohibiting discriminatory publications in the other provinces.”

Coyne's commentors are scouring the net, of course. A previous quote from the expert witness for the plaintiffs, currently on the stand;

"It has a lot to do with the difference in belief about freedom … the essential difference is how freedom is understood. I believe that my freedom ends where the dignity and respect for all the prophets begins.” (—Mahmoud Mustafa Ayoub)

More about Ayoub at tthe MIlitant Islam Monitor. "Temple University has rejected a suspicious offer of $1.5 million by a Saudi tied, Islamist organization called the International Institute of Islamic Thought [IIIT], to endow a chair in Islamic studies headed by current Temple religion professor Mahmoud Mustafa Ayoub."

Coyne has noted that Mark Steyn is in the room.

Thoughts from the road - Ezra Levan --I am deeply grateful to those anti-Semitic bastards for waking up the nation to the threat of radical Islam, and calling upon a somnolent press corps to rediscover and rededicate themselves to our ancient value of free speech.

Liveblogging the BC HRT, Day 3 --I suggest folks get busy forwarding both reports to the offices of every MP and MLA in the nation, along with Ezra's three word solution.

Fire. Them. All.

Update Tarek Fatah writes in Coyne's comments;

Does anyone remember Sheikh Younus Kathrada, the Imam who preached that Jews were “brothers of monkeys and swine”?

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2005/07/21/cleric-rcmp050721.html

Well, what do you know. The good old “monkeys and swine” imam is part of this convoluted Islamist alliance fighting Mackeans.

THIS SEEMS LIKE OVERREACH, even for Canada's kangaroo-court "Human Rights" Commissions:

The entire blogosphere was put on trial during the second day of a B.C. Human Rights Tribunal hearing into an excerpt of a controversial book published in Maclean's.

Of course, since half the blogs in creation seem to have covert HRC investigators/provocateurs posting racist comments, maybe it's fair . . . . (emphasis added).

My beef is with a particular social class -- the 'intelligentsia' -- and not with the practice of using one's intellect to reflect on experience. In my experience, intellectuals (as a class) are ideologically intolerant, easily offended by ordinary humor, and pretentious in their prejudices, which they disguise as universal truths." The comments are delightful, especially the two from Stuart Buck. (Via Volokh).

IF GPS GETS KNOCKED OUT, the government has a backup plan. "This year, the Department of Homeland Security decided that a 30-year-old navigation system used by mariners will be upgraded to back up GPS. The decision preserves the Long-Range Aids to Navigation (LORAN) network, which has been teetering on the verge of forced retirement since the 1980s, according to the Coast Guard’s Navigation Center."

Assassination fascination

June 4, 2008 03:24 PM by Michelle Malkin

I have an entire blog category devoted to assassination chic. It’s a staple of the unhinged Left, whose writers, playwrights, artists, documentarians, and politicians can’t get enough of BDS-infused merchandise, jokes, child brainwashing, and signage. Yes, there’s the occasional gaffe on the Right (hello, Mike Huckabee), but scroll through my assassination chic posts and you’ll see they’re dominated by stories of liberals imagining their ideological opponents gunned down, decapitated, or otherwise snuffed out.

Refresher:

– Sarah Vowell’s best-selling murder travelogue of assassinated Republican presidents, Assassination Vacation;

– Nicholson Baker’s Checkpoint, a novella conversation between two people about the advisability of assassinating the president;

“Art” exhibits like this one:

bushgun.jpg

– Liberal talk radio rants from hate-spewers such as Randi Rhodes;

European incitement to kill Bush, like Guardian columnist 2004 Charlie Brooker’s pre-election diatribe:

On November 2, the entire civilised world will be praying, praying Bush loses. And Sod’s law dictates he’ll probably win, thereby disproving the existence of God once and for all. The world will endure four more years of idiocy, arrogance and unwarranted bloodshed, with no benevolent deity to watch over and save us. John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Jr. - where are you now that we need you?

– Assorted left-wing paraphernalia like this:

And, of course, Death of a President:Now comes martyrdom-seeking artist Yazmany Arboledo (here’s his blog) to whine about how his assassination fascination– in the form of “art” exploring the “character assassination” of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama–is being stifled in Manhattan.

Greg at Rhymes with Right sums it up nicely:

Why are Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton treated any different, especially when it is clear that the exhibit in question is a critique of the media coverage of the just-concluded race for the Democrat presidential nomination? Could it be that Assassination Chic is only cool if the target is a Republican?

Barack Hussein Obama is the apex of the hate-America, domestic enemy in this country. His election as president would be the greatest coup any enemy has ever scored against this country and could easily lead to the worsty, horrific disaster in our nation's history.

The Widening Gyre: Liberty Edition

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

- Verse 1, The Second Coming, William Butler Yeats

What a useful poem Yeats concocted - so many applications. Today let’s look at some stories that flesh out the idea of the “widening gyre” - think of the falcon, tossed off the leathered glove, ascending ’round and ’round in ever-broader circles. Think of a cyclone. Think how hard it is for us falcons - as we mover further away, caught in all the noise of wind and air - to hear the voice of the Falconer who set us free.

There’s lots of noise today. I’ll write about Obama and Hillary later - I’ve got something specific in mind, but let’s see what else is swirling about us and lost in the cacophony.

The falcon cannot hear the falconer:
The pro-censorship Human Rights Commission er, Tribunal, er Kangaroo Court, er Bastion of Liberal Fascism in Canada prosecutes thought crimes and suppresses free speech for the sake of hurt feelings. Writes David Warren:

…in a case designed to challenge freedom of the press. It is a show trial, under the arbitrary powers given to Canada’s obscene “human rights” commissions, by Section 13 of our Human Rights Act.

I wrote “obscene” advisedly. A respondent who comes before Canada’s “human rights” tribunals has none of the defences formerly guaranteed in common law. The truth is no defence, reasonable intention is no defence, nor material harmlessness, there are no rules of evidence, no precedents, nor case law of any kind. The commissars running the tribunals need have no legal training, exhibit none, and owe their appointments to networking among leftwing activists. -

Emphasis mine. Warren - one of my all-time favorite writers - makes one deplorable error there: he writes about “freedom of the press,” without noticing that the press has voluntarily surrendered its own freedom in order to advance the stifling cause of political correctness and the endless restrictions on liberty to which PC is dedicated. When Al Gore can tell the press not to report dissenting scientific opinion on global warming, and the press dutifully obeys, that press is no longer free. When the press silences itself rather than report good news, that press is no longer free.

I know this story is about Canada,, but Americans had better pay attention, this is not about a nation; it’s about a mindset. This story and the next one are about what you might call the United Far-Left States, which is multinational, borderless and faithful to no ideal but its own need to control. You can’t see if or hear it if you’re circling too far above it, in the noise and the wind.

Another Canadian writer - also one of my faves - Kathy Shaidle, shows us where the HRC is heading (and I predicted years ago that PC would be used against the churches and was called an alarmist): suppression of freedom of religion.:

a message posted to a popular Catholic internet forum has reportedly made its way before the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal. The alleged poster, who is an American writing from America, was commenting on an article written by Mark Steyn — a Canadian author who now lives in New Hampshire. The tribunal accepted this posting as evidence that Steyn promoted “hatred”
[...]
Canada’s human rights tribunals are now attempting to prosecute a case against an American resident, based upon what an American citizen allegedly posted to a mainstream American Catholic website. What passes for mainstream Catholic discussion in America is now the basis for a hate complaint in Canada.

As I said, this movement has no borders.

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold: Are you really ready for a planet tax based on a theory that is unprovable? The inconvenient truth is that we cannot predict what the weather will do next week, and we have no way of knowing whether in ten years the colder or warmer whether prevailing will be part of a cycle or an aberration, because the world is a lot wiser and older than our conceited generation and does not move by our schedules. Global Warming (aka “Climate Change”) is the scam that will keep on giving because no matter what happens it lets the alarmist claim “see, we were right!” If weather goes bad, “see, we were right!” If weather goes good, “see, we were right! We took away your liberties and wrecked your economy, but the planet lives, so we were right!” I’m losing patience with people who are ready to give up their freedom to drive, buy the lightbulbs they choose, and to allow the destruction of their economy and a culture for this suppressive, liberty-stealing flim-flam - a hoax which Obama paid homage to in last night’s speech.

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world:. Voters? what voters?, Political Intimidation? What political intimidation? Genocidal movements? What genocidal movements?

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
Letting people die rather than accept aid (Condoms, they’ll accept!) Voting out a Kindergartener, Government over grief, Letting more people starve!, Hey, we’re atheists! you have to tolerate our sex in your confessional but we don’t have to be sensitive to your sensibilities! Assassination as Art-theme (well, at least that’s finally thought objectionable; it wasn’t for Bush.) I’m not starving my people! You are starving my people!

The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Soros: Screwing with economies is not my ethical conundrum. I’m just saying!

Obama: Israel? Why I’m Israel’s great Champion!, forget what I said about Palestinian suffering! Pull out of Iraq? yes, I’m calling it victory even if it sets chaos in motion in that region! Iran? C’mon, they’re not really dangerous but they’re pretty suddenly worrisome! Jesus? Yeah, Jesus is cool, but sin is when I distance myself from my own values! Earmarks? Don’t talk about my ears, I’m sensitive! Experience? Who needs experience when you’ve got oratory?

Press: Bill and Hillary? we never liked them!

The Right: In 2006 they sat out the election, lost the congress and weakened their president in a tantrum over illegal immigration, “the most important issue in America,” which (without the prompting of A.N.S.W.E.R-organized Mexi-marches) they’re barely discussing now, and on which issue nothing has changed. But some of them are still talking about sitting things out to teach the nation a lesson.

The Left: We don’t have to be right, our concerns and our feelings make us noble!

The Electorate: Experience and Character Schmaracter!

Who ya gonna trust?

Sarah Palin for GOP VEEP! Seriously. If McCain has any brains at all.

Young Men in Search of Civil Debate! I like this idea and will keep an eye on it!.

Maureen Dowd is hitting homers, although she should not be surprised that “Hillary is still here.” If her memory of January 2001 were not clouded by hate, she’d recall that on Bush’s Inaugural Day, Bill would not get off the stage, and at one point cooed into the microphone, “ah’m still here…” Still, after being lost in her wilderness of Bush Derangement Syndrome, which overwhelmed her writing and muddied it up, it’s good to see her back in control of her pen.

To close:

We must repeat, over and over, that Liberty is the means by which we created creatures are meant to live and to grow and be. That Liberty lives in the Truth. That Liberty lives where people can speak freely, without fear of injury or reprisals. That Liberty lives only when the press is free and unencumbered - when it is detached from events instead of entwined in them. That Liberty lives when people refuse to be intimidated into silence or acquiescence, whether in the workplace or within the community. That Liberty is the fragile thing that diminishes whenever one refuses to acclaim it for oneself. — Your Humble Blogress

Thoughts from the road - Ezra Levan --" I regret that Elmasry and Habib and Awan have exposed Canadian Muslims to hatred and contempt, for their un-Canadian antics. But I am deeply grateful to those anti-Semitic bastards for waking up the nation to the threat of radical Islam, and calling upon a somnolent press corps to rediscover and rededicate themselves to our ancient value of free speech."

Farewell Free Speech -- You see, thanks to the ability of Canadian government bureaucrats to hold “human rights tribunals,” they no longer have free speech in Canada. Now the magazine and Steyn are the subject of multiple “human rights” tribunals at the provincial level in British Columbia as well as before the national Canadian Human Rights Commission. full story

Mark Steyn, HRCs in the media this week

Tarek Fatah

Report on HRCs -- This is one of the better summaries, I have read.
" The HRCs are clearly a threat to the liberty of Canadians of all kinds. Currently, staffed with liberal activists, they are a particular threat to conservatives and Christians. Moreover, the setup of the HRCs is such that they attract frivolous complaints and are ripe for abuse, both from within and without. "

Show Trial - By David Warren

Mark Steyn From the BC Human Rights Kangaroo Tribunal

Can't call the CHRC/T liars or thugs dressed like lawyers

Friday updates -- and a look ahead to my own show trial

| | |

1. Keep up to date on the final day of the Maclean's/Mark Steyn hearing at the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal by visiting Andrew Coyne's blog.

2. Here's a radio interview I did yesterday on John Gormley's top-rated talk show (from my cell phone, as I was rushing noisily between meetings -- sorry!)

3. Here's a very important editorial in Calgary's newspaper of record, the Calgary Herald. It holds Premier Ed Stelmach to his campaign promise to review Alberta's Human Rights Commission. You really ought to take a few minutes to read the whole thing, but let me excerpt a few lines. The reference to Boissoin is to a Christian pastor ordered by the Alberta HRC to stop talking about homosexuality, and to apologize -- against his conscience -- to a gay rights activist:

Finally, Boissoin is to provide Lund with a written apology for the sincerely held opinion he published in the Advocate.

As apologies that do not spring from changed minds mean nothing, this must be seen for what it is: the kind of recantation squeezed by an inquisition from some unfortunate, a denial of conscience for the sole purpose of grinding the dissenter's face into the dust, the better that he may eat his words.

In its present form, Alberta's Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Act is profoundly anti-liberty, leaving Albertans the right to say only what does not offend their neighbours on any of 13 different grounds.

It has been used to guillotine legitimate discourse on matters of immediate public importance, and removes from men and women that most basic of all human attributes -- the right to their own opinion.

Premier Stelmach, do something for liberty, now. Repeal Section 3(1)(b) from Alberta's human rights act.

And then the Herald's editorial did something unusual: they put out a call to action to their readers, telling them to get behind the campaign for liberty, and to write to the premier. That's pretty rare, and it shows the impressive depth of commitment the Herald has for freedom. Here's the end of their editorial:

To stand up for our hard-won freedoms and western way of life, write to:

Office of the Premier

Room 307, Legislature

Building

10800 97th Ave.

Edmonton, Alberta

T5K 2B6

(No stamp is necessary.)

Or phone: 1-780-427-2251

Fax: 1-780-632-6888

To call toll free call: 310-0000

E-mail: premier@gov.ab.ca

I wonder if Stelmach will indeed do a review of the HRC, like the federal Conservatives are now promising to do. Frankly, I doubt it -- the Alberta Tories are a pretty sluggish bunch; they just went through an election, and are feeling particularly impervious to public opinion. How impervious? They just granted themselves an enormous pay raise, making themselves the highest-paid provincial legislators in the country. And they haven't been ideologically conservative since Ralph Klein's first term.

So what does that mean? I think I know, because I've seen in happen with my own eyes in Vancouver.

I predict that the Government of Alberta will continue to ignore this issue. They'll say it's only animated by a few hot-headed conservative bloggers, and some obsessed editorial writers in a few newspapers. So they'll keep hitting the snooze button on their alarm.

And then my trial will come, as Mark Steyn's did. And then the thousands of Albertans who have been briefing themselves on this subject, and getting angrier and angrier, will have the same spectacle as Vancouver is now having. And the national media will come to town -- well briefed, well prepared, especially after Mark Steyn's show trial in Vancouver.

And then the Alberta Tories -- rudderless, boring -- will have an enormous issue thrust upon them, an issue they could have neutralized in advance.

The Vancouver show trial of Maclean's and Mark Steyn was spectacular, but only because of the buffoonery of the kangaroo "judges" and the stupidity and outright lies of the Canadian Islamic Congress. The respondent, Maclean's, was quite well behaved. They didn't put forward provocative testimony; their lawyers were very sober and buttoned-down; they tried to make it as proper a procedure as they could. Mark Steyn didn't testify, or even "live-blog" the event. The circus aspects of the hearing were all from the CIC and the tribunal itself.

And it was still an amazing show, that grabbed national attention, and even foreign interest.

Dear reader, imagine what an Alberta show trial, over the Danish cartoons, would look like if the respondent chose to misbehave a little bit.

Oh, nothing illegal. Maybe even nothing that could count as "conduct unbecoming". But what if the respondent in that Alberta show trial decided to put on a bit of a show himself? No-one from Maclean's testified. Reader, do you really think I would decline to speak on my own behalf? Do you think I'm genetically capable of remaining silent in the face of such unmitigated crap?

Do you think that I would go quietly? Do you think I would bite my tongue? Do you think that I would be modest, and moderate, and cooperative? Do you really think that I would allow, without acid comments of my own, the kind of corruption we witnessed in Vancouver?

I did not request a show trial. I did not convene the circus. But if Alberta is going to have one, well then, by God, I'll take the role of P.T. Barnum. We already know who the kangaroos are. And the plaintiff is a bit of a clown.

Memo to Premier Stelmach: You've got a few months to spay your own kangaroos and shut down the circus. Stop counting your money from your pay raise, and get to it.

Memo to the national new media: Stelmach will do nothing, and so the show will go on. Bring your cameras. If it's to be a show trial, I promise you a helluva show.

Ezra - you are now famous in Australia too.
The more Canadians, especially Albertans, read this the better -

 Ezra,

Have you yet read Andrew Coyne's very last post from the Kangaroo Court? Apparently ONLY TODAY did they realize that he was live blogging to the world.  It looks like the BCHRT just kicked Andrew Coyne out of the room.

Are you telling me that it took them until Friday at noon to figure out that Andrew was “broadcasting”? These guys really are clueless.

I just had to draw the attention of you and your readers to Andrew Coyne's last entry, which I've compiled here.

Steyn Showtrial 5.2

June 6, 2008 by binky

“Just something to remember: 64 years ago today Canadian and other allied troops stormed the beaches of France to begin the final takedown of the totalitarian Nazi regime. Those Canadian, British,American, Polish and French soldiers fought and died to protect us and to preserve the freedoms that characterize democracy. Think of that as we behold this Tribunal, and think of how far we have fallen. Have we betrayed the ideals who went ashore on 6 June 1944? During WW I John McCrae wrote “If ye break faith with us who die/We shall not sleep/Though poppies grow/In Flanders Fields.” Are those poor guys spinning in their graves?”

What could Mark Steyn's punishment look like? -Levant -- Of course Pastor Boissoin cannot apologize to these complainants, any more than I can apologize for calling Richard Warman a neo-Stalinist thug, because whatever some misguided court decides, the fact remains, I sincerely believe he is a neo-Stalinist thug. I also believe Darren Lund is acting like a Stalinist in trying to silence a Christian's heartfelt faith confession. As for Ms Andreachuk, she falls into the category of "useful idiot" that Lenin foretold would be helpful to the spread of his revolution.   |   "...outrageous. The Robson Square Witch Trials

Just one more day before Steyn gets thrown in the drink.

My day is pretty much tied up with masking tape and a race Corvette, so you're advised to seek Andrew Coyne for the gory details.

Update - I'm beat. 9 straight hours in the paint booth (I may have photos in a few days. Depends on what they send me.). A couple of items to wrap this up - Beyond the Twilight Zone, the written submissions from Canadian Association of Journalists and the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association and the Canadian Civil Liberties Ass'n., plus, we hear again from Tarek Fatah in Coyne's comments thread;

Dear ‘Just Living,’

Try living a full and free life instead of hiding behind a cyber-burka and a name that tells all, viz., Just Living.

To label all people on this forum as ‘bigots,’ is not surprising as it is the only tool employed by Islamists hell-bent on upholding the jihadi doctrine of the Muslim Brotherhood in Canada.

I know it is difficult, but is it possible that the only people contributing to Islamophobia in Canada are the mulla-elmasry duo?

What did these twits achieve other than to embarrass all Muslim Canadians, who appear to held hostage by the blackmail of community patriotism?

Last night one of these imams came on the Michael Coren Show to discuss polygamy and made such an ass of himself, waving the Quran at the host, mocking Christianity on a Christian TV station and then claiming there was Islamophobia in this country! When I defended my faith by explaining that polygamy was a medieval Bedouin tradition meant to take care of war widows, the Imam started reading from the Quran, screaming, “My religion allows me to marry four wives…Tarek Fatah knows nothing about Islam,” then he sneered at me with ugly facial gestures, waving hands and feminine accent, “Tarek Fatah is modern … moddderrrnnn Muslim…He is not a Muslim,” as if modernity itself was his enemy!

Dear ‘Just Living’, start living and while you are at it, if you are looking for bigots, chances are you will find them in Elmasry’s mosque or Dr. Habib’s clinic, definitely not on this Macleans forum. Sarcasm? May be. Anger? Yes and justifiably so. Islamophiobia? Not a shred of it in five days of discussion.

Dear ‘Just Living,’ the notion that the US or Canada are anti-Muslim does not withstand scrutiny. The number one selling author in both countries for over two years is a Muslim: Dr. Khalid Hossieni whose novel ‘Kite Runner’ has made so many Canucks shed tears on Go Trains and in their solitudes as they embraced the young poor boys of Kabul as their very own family. There is more.

The most sold poet in all of North America is the medieval Muslim poet Rumi. Why would Americans choose to read Maulana Rumi if they hate Muslims?

The most popular sportsman in US for decades is Muhammad Ali Clay. This mischievous boxer who titillated and entertained all of us with his sly smile and political wit. And who still stings like butterfly and floats like a bee! If Americans and the US hate Muslims, why do they love Muhammad Ali, Rumi and read the Kite Runner?

Why does CNN give Ali Velshi so much airtime prominence if it is anti-Muslim? Why, if the West hates Islam, is Farid Zakaria the editor of Newsweek magazine and why is permitted to host his own show on PBS and CNN?

Right in the heart of Vancouver where the boy-band is spewing hate against Canada and its free press, lives Senator Mobina Jaffer. Does her appointment to the senate reflect an anti-Muslim bias in the West or Canada? How doe we end up electing a young Muslim lawyer from Ottawa Centre if Canaucks are anti-Islam? And if your anger is directed at the Conservative flank of Canadian political spectrum, why them would the Reform Party, then the Alliance and later the Conservatives elect Rahim Jaffer as an MP since 1993. Or do you discount him to be a good Muslim simply because he is smart, good looking, dates a lovely MP and wears stylish suits, and heavens forbid, has sense of humour that borders impish naughtiness, a trait that would help such cry babies as Khurrum Awan and Faisal ‘Joseph’ to grow up and stop sucking on their thumbs as they utter drivel.

Dear ‘Just Living,’ please start living.

Indeed. (Thanks to Lori for the catch.)

Stetyn hopes he losses!
Controversial author and social commentator Mark Steyn said Friday he wants to lose his case before the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal in Vancouver. Instead, Steyn wants to take the "hate speech" case to an actual court of law.

How Mayhill Fowler got online scoops on Obama and Bill Clinton ( Obama;s comment on Bitter Americans

YOU CAN SPOT A BUBBLE by irrational exuberance, and pronouncements that the usual rules no longer apply. With that in mind, note this:

Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama dropped in on the Chicago 2016 Olympics rally on Friday and declared he is confident that he will be winding up his second term in the White House when Chicago hosts the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Such bravado about his own future is not typical of Obama, even in private.

Then there's this:

Barack Obama isn't really one of us. Not in the normal way, anyway. . . .

Many spiritually advanced people I know (not coweringly religious, mind you, but deeply spiritual) identify Obama as a Lightworker, that rare kind of attuned being who has the ability to lead us not merely to new foreign policies or health care plans or whatnot, but who can actually help usher in a new way of being on the planet, of relating and connecting and engaging with this bizarre earthly experiment. These kinds of people actually help us evolve. They are philosophers and peacemakers of a very high order, and they speak not just to reason or emotion, but to the soul.

I'm just sayin'.MEGAN MCARDLE: "McCain wants to shut down Amtrak. Liberals are predictibly (and understandably) outraged.

CHRC Evidence Tampering of Transcripts - Breaking ! ... On his popular blog, Ezra Levant wrote:

siren.gifKey testimony from the March 25th Canadian Human Rights Tribunal hearing in the Warman v. Lemire case has been redacted from the official Canadian Human Rights Commission transcript.

Like the missing 18 minutes of Richard Nixon's secret Watergate tapes, the official transcript produced by the CHRC omits embarrassing testimony about the CHRC's conduct -- the very conduct that is the subject of the Privacy Commissioner's investigation, an RCMP criminal investigation, and a proposed Parliamentary investigation.

The deletion was discovered by the respondent in the case, Marc Lemire, who painstakingly compared an audio recording of the hearing with the CHRC's written transcript.

At the hearing Lemire's lawyer, Barbara Kulaszka, was examining Dean Steacy, the CHRC anti-hate investigator who famously declared that "freedom of speech is an American concept, so I don't give it any value." Kulaszka was asking Steacy about the time the CHRC hacked into the Internet account of a private citizen, to log on to a Nazi website using one of the CHRC's secret identities, called Jadewarr.

Here's what the official transcript said:

MS. KULASZKA: So, Mr. Warman was, in fact, present when you signed on to the jadewarr account and printed off the document?

MR. STEACY: Yes, he did.

But the actual testimony, according to audio tapes of the hearing, was this:

MS. KULASZKA: So, Mr. Warman was, in fact, present when you signed on to the jadewarr account and printed off the document?

MR. STEACY: Yes he was.

MS. KULASZKA: So he knew who printed it off, didn't he?

MR. STEACY: Yes, he did.

This is important for two reasons:

1. It confirms that the CHRC's word cannot be taken at face value on anything -- even official-looking documents, such as transcripts. It isn't the first time the CHRC has tried to brazen its way through a falsehood.

2. The deleted sentences are essential to proving that Richard Warman, the CHRC's former employee and currently its largest customer, lied under oath to the tribunal. Read my blog entry here if you want the details, but in 2006, Warman had denied, under oath, that he knew who printed off the Jadewarr memo. The deleted section of Steacy's testimony proves that Warman was there, and did indeed know who printed it off.

Don't take my word for it that this is critically important. The CHRC has gone to incredible lengths to keep the information at the March 25th hearing out of the public eye.

First, they applied to have the hearing kept secret, with media banned from attending.

When that failed, they refused to release a transcript to the public.

And now it turns out that the transcript they commissioned, that was leaked to the public, contains at least one omission that is strategically important to all three investigations -- Privacy Commissioner, RCMP and Parliament -- not to mention Warman's nuisance lawsuit against me and my fellow bloggers.

Here's a friendly tip for anyone doing business with someone from the CHRC: if you shake their hand, count your fingers afterwards.

MORE ON CANADA'S "HUMAN RIGHTS" KANGAROO COURTS:

Section 7 of the B.C. Human Rights Code is not compatible with freedom of speech and expression in Canada, and should be struck down by a court, if not by the tribunal.

Plus this:

"I'm not happy to be here," said Toronto lawyer Julian Porter, who is representing Maclean's. "We're not entitled under the law the way it's structured to plead truth, fair comment, qualified privilege or intent or standards of journalism."

Porter said that in the Supreme Court of Canada, truth or fair comment is a defence, but that test doesn't apply with the human rights tribunal.

Human rights commissions and tribunals were set up decades ago to deal with discrimination over access of services in housing or employment.

At the start, opponents of such tribunals were what criminologist John Miller called "wing nuts, the white supremacists or fundamental Christians."

No one had much sympathy for them when they complained about the tribunals. Now that Maclean's is targeted, the debate has flowed into larger, broader issues of constitutional rights of freedom of expression, Miller said.

Stupid wingnuts. Then there are the charges of evidence tampering by investigators.

And a prediction:

Goodness knows what the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal will do with their hearing about Maclean's and Mark Steyn. Probably what they did with their 1997 case against North Vancouver columnist Doug Collins: Release the steam by calling them horrible people but not quite hateful enough to be convicted, then write in some judicial refinement for future use against less well-equipped defendants who have no powerful friends and can't afford counsel like Julian Porter and Roger McConchie.

Of course, the tribunal may not. They may go for broke, rely on the precedent subversive to free speech that's been handed down over the years by the Supreme Court of Canada and companion human rights commissions and convict Steyn and Maclean's of publishing something likely to expose Muslims to hatred and contempt.

But these are not silly people. Anti-free-speech, yes; silly, not at all. They have excellent survival skills, and knowing what a bollocks the week's proceedings would appear to a reasonable person, and how many reasonable persons know about it, they may well decide not to push their luck.

Their names and pictures should be widely published, along with those of the put-up complainants, as enemies of free speech and -- ironically enough -- human rights. They're commissars without, so far, a fully-functioning KGB. But it's not for lack of trying.

UPDATE: Canadians may be figuring things out.

Sure Enough, Farmers Finally Begin To Make Some Money

And there are people out there who want to wreck it for them.

Annette Desmerais is associate professor justice studies at the University of Regina, Jim Handy a professor of history at the University of Saskatchewan. For the Western Producer (behind subscriber wall).

It is this neoliberal, industrial and corporate-driven model of agriculture that has been globalized over the past 30 years. This is a model that treats food like any other commodity, presents agriculture exclusively as a profit-making venture, concentrates productive resources into the hands of agro-industry and places food in commodities futures markets.

Here profit-hungry speculators, investors and hedge funds scoop up millions of dollars through frenzied bidding and betting on price changes and predictions of scarcities. Agriculture has moved away from its primary function, that of feeding humans.

Today, less than half of the world's grains are eaten by humans, Instead, grains are used primarily to feed animals, and recently these grains are now being converted into agrofuel to feed cars. This is manufactured scarcity par excellence.

[...]

National polices such as price controls, tariffs and marketing boards, designed to ensure the viability of small-scale farmers and an adequate supply of culturally appropriate and nutritious food through support for domestic agriculture, have been replaced by the voracious demands of the market.

[...]

La Via Campesina, an international farm movement representing 149 organizations from 56 countries, argues that the global food crisis demonstartes the desperate need to build a fundamentally new model of agriculture -- one based on food sovereignty.

[... They argue] that this crisis can be resolved only if governments support peasant and small-scale production, rebuild their national food economies and regulate international markets and if the international community respects and protects and fulfills human rights, especially the right to food.

A Saskatchewan grain producer of 50 years replies. You know him here as "Spike1";
"Adequate food is simple justice" reads the headline.

Well, well well, a professor of justice and a professor of history, chiding the growers, traders and distributors of food for treating food as a commodity - blaming profit hungry traders, speculators, and hedge funds for the high price of food. This drivel from professors that earn a scandalous return on investment, (with tenure, by the way), by being paid tens of thosuands of dollars with not one nickle invested, makes me respond to the tripe.

A professor of history that ignores the great famines of the past in Russia, China and elsewhere under the communists, the famines of the present in North Korea and Africa that have nothing to do with traders and speculators, but with despots willing to starve their own people.

A professor of justice ignoring the tariffs and other governmenbt restrictions on the movement of food. A professor of justice that thinks that others should be responsible for feeding him and others.

Professors that distain the feeding of feed grains and ethanol by-products to livestock, thus converting waste products into concentrated protein for human consumption. Professors that live in a city where not one in a thousand, including themselves, are self sufficient in food.

La Via Campesina wants a return to the "back to the land" movement - as happened in China when millions starved and the government controlled the availability of food.

Professors that advocate a cheap food policy for the world's poor, but support marketing boards that restrict the production of food to maintain the artificially high price for commodities (with the resulting quota bidding) better remember which side they are on.

Professors that seem to be ignorant of the need for animals for motive power and agriculture in all countries. Cattle and sheep that harvest the grass in dry and mountainous regions, thus converting it to protein for human consumption. Yaks that till the rice fields, horses, oxen, and other animals that haul farm produce to markets, cows that graze at will and supply milk and fuel in India, the list goes on.

The Canadian government isntituted a cheap food policy in the Trudeau years, and the result was the decimation of the farm population. Maybe it's time for a cheap university education policy - not with subsidies, but with the slashing of income for professors, like the cheap food policy did for farmers.

The mansions built in University Park weren't built by traders and speculators in food.

"The curious thing is that these armchair socialists are generally thought of as smart. Funny stuff. Especially since they combine the notion of self sufficiency in food production as a prerequisite for 'national security', yet propose a collectivist approach that does not use market price as a market signal of scarcity. Central planning indeed, Comrade."

Old farming adage with a modern update......

COMMUNISM: If you have two cows, you give the two cows to the state, and the government will give you a little milk.

FASCISM: If you have two cows, you keep the cows and give the government the milk, then the government sells you the milk.

SOCIALISM: If you have two cows, the government takes one and gives it to someone else.

NAZISM: If you have two cows and happen to be a jew, the government kills you and takes the two cows.

CAPITALISM: If you have two cows, you sell one and buy a bull and increase production.

PERONISM: Argentina)Current version - If you have two cows, Nestor and Cristina Kischner take the milk and export it at a record high world commodity price, and then give the farmers whatever money is left over after the Kirschners pay off their political cronies and subsidize their urban poor political base. If the farmers can't cover their costs, too bad.

Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing

Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson are the gifted husband and wife team who wrote pop/soul classics including "Let's Go Get Stoned," “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “You’re All I Need To Get By.” He writes the words, she the music. They have a remarkable personal story that begins in a Harlem church choir and is enhanced by their longevity as a writing and performing couple. After turning out hit songs for artists at Motown and elsewhere -- Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell were an especially memorable vehicle for their work -- they launched their own performing and recording career. They now have some 20 albums to their credit

Last night we saw them perform on the second of two nights at the Dakota Restaurant and Jazz Club in Minneapolis. The Dakota is an intimate venue that combines class and warmth. Proprietor Lowell Pickett sports an easy smile at least in part because the restaurant combines his passion for music with his vocation. It's my favorite place to hear live music. If you're ever in the Twin Cities, check it out if you can.

We sat about eight feet from the stage during the first of their two sets. Ashford and Simpson performed their hits with heart and energy, as though for the first time. The two of them radiate charisma. On "I'm Every Woman" (a hit for Chaka Khan and Whitney Houston), Simpson stepped off the stage to work the room. She squeezed my hand as she went by our table. Ain't nothing like the real thing. Their show had the same perfect craft as their songs. It was a completely winning set.

In the video above, Ashford and Simpson perform "Solid," one of the songs they sang last night. For a glimpse of Ashford and Simpson singing "You're All I Need To Get By" at Aretha Franklin's birthday party at Tavern on the Green in Central Park, click here. For an excellent CBS Sunday Morning profile of them, click here. For a video of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell singing "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," click here.

Ashford and Simpson have been working together since the mid-1960's and have been married since 1974. They specialize in romantic anthems that seem like a relic of a lost civilization. Their show is something of a tribute to marital passion, not exactly par for the course in show business. Last night my wife and I coincidentally sat next to my high school friend Ned Foster and his wife Laura Tiffany. The show wowed us all. I don't know where Ashford and Simpson may be performing next, but catch them if you can.

Norway Muslims Jailed For Genital Mutilation

June 7th, 2008

From those defenders of the faith at Reuters:

Norway couple charged for circumcising girls

Reuters - Friday, June 6

OSLO (Reuters) - Police in Norway have arrested a Gambian-born man and charged him and his wife with subjecting five of their six daughters to genital mutilation, officials said on Friday.

The practice, also known as female circumcision, is outlawed in Norway and arouses horror among many people in the West but is a rite of passage for young women in many countries, predominantly in Africa.

The youngest of the five mutilated girls, all born in Norway, is five years old, police officials said. The others are aged seven, 10, 13 and 14 and live in Gambia, national broadcaster NRK reported.

Police officer Hanne Kristin Rohde, head of the violent crime and vice section of the Oslo police, said on Norwegian commercial television TV 2 that the father — a naturalised Norwegian citizen along with his wife — was taken into custody on Friday.

“Norwegian police have charged this couple of Gambian background for breaking the Norwegian law on genital mutilation — five of their six daughters are circumcised,” Rohde said.

The mother is pregnant with a seventh child and was deemed unfit to be held in jail.

Norwegian authorities have been cracking down on the practice since mid-2007, barring families from travelling abroad if they suspect they plan to have the procedure done outside the country.

The charges are based on the discovery by child protection authorities that the couple’s second youngest daughter, age five, was circumcised, Rohde said. Their youngest, age three, has not been subjected to the procedure, NRK said.

The child protection authorities have taken custody of the two youngest girls, Rohde said, adding that the police would now seek to bring the other four back to Norway in cooperation with the parents and Gambian and other Norwegian authorities.

U.N. agencies say an estimated 100 to 140 million women and girls worldwide have undergone genital mutilation, whose proponents say it promotes chastity before marriage and fidelity afterwards by reducing female sexual desire. Around 3 million a year are believed to be subjected to it.

Not only is this a loathsome practice, but the efforts that will have to be made to stamp it out will cause still more limits on the freedoms of the rest of the Norwegians.

Norwegian authorities have been cracking down on the practice since mid-2007, barring families from travelling abroad if they suspect they plan to have the procedure done outside the country.

The charges are based on the discovery by child protection authorities that the couple’s second youngest daughter, age five, was circumcised…

Just a further contribution to Western civilization from the Religion Of Peace.

Obama The Lightworker

UPDATE: After you read this, if you’re wondering where this “Lightworker” snake oil came from, go check out Mrs. Peel who may have found the secret fount of Morford’s theology. It’s good for a laugh.

Short answer: video games. H/T to Doubleplusundead, who has more.
____________________
The unnerving adoration of the Obamessiah has reached a revolting new depth with Mark Morford’s SF Chronicle column. I won’t even link it.

Ordinarily Morford is a voice of such petulant, venomous bitchiness that he doesn’t bear a response. I had seen a couple of blog posts about Morford’s latest, in which he calls Obama a “Lightworker”. At first I just snorted, because it just sounds like a clunker of a phrase–like he’s inadvertently calling Obama some sort of new-age electrician or something.

But reading the column, I get a little chill: Morford is careful to disclose he doesn’t consider Obama to be a Messiah, so let me preface this by pointing out that I don’t think he’s Satan. But the Lightworker thing sounded suspiciously like Lightbearer to me.

Though I may be coweringly religious, I could not help but remember the last time one such Lightbearer “helped us evolve“.

And this Lightworker is helping us evolve already: one of his few legislative accomplishments is a series of unbroken pro-abortion votes that makes even some pro-choicers squirm–including support for the barbaric practice of partial-birth abortion:29 Comments

HuffPo: Andy Ostroy correctly predicts SwiftBoating of Obama [Karl]

At the HuffPo, Andy Ostroy claims that the sleazy GOP attack machine is kicking into high gear against Barack Obama.

He is quite upset that Sean Hannity was calling Obama “radical” on his radio show Thursday, but he seems even more upset by Hannity’s audience:

Listening to Hannity’s program makes you wonder if he and his kool-aid-drunken listeners are not part of some twisted, brainwashed cult. They greet each other with “you’re a great American” and depart with “God bless you.”

OH NOES! Perhaps Ostroy should take a look at the extensive evidence for the Cult of Obama that existed even before columnist Mark Morford mentioned all the people he knows who consider Obama a “Lightworker.”  Saying “God Bless You” as a salutation sort of pales in comparison to applauding a politician for blowing his nose onstage.

Ostroy argues that Hannity hammered on Obama’s “radical associations”  is “meant to conjure up all sorts of fear, anger and racial prejudice.”  Yet of the associations Ostroy mentions — unrepentant terrorist William Ayers, Tony Rezko, Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Father Michael Pfleger — three are not black.  Wright certainly is, but at this point, few would argue that Wright is anything but an angry black man who trafficks in race-baiting and conspiracy mongering.  Obama wrote in his first book that Wright decribed Trinity to him as a radical church, so referring to Obama’s decades of worship there a radical association seems fair, even by Obama’s own account.  And Ostroy in fact provides no argument that the associations Hannity described are not radical.

Ostroy then turns to Mark Levin’s radio program Thursday, in which Obama was allegedly “accused of just about everything short of eating babies.”  Yet the only specific given by Ostroy is an accusation that Obama has a long history of being hostile to the state of Israel, even as Ostroy claims Levin had no facts to back up the charge.

As to the only specific claim Ostroy raises, it is pretty easy to point toward Obama’s longtime personal and fundraising relationship with former PLO flack Rashid Khalidi, including the thousands Obama (and Ayers) helped funnel to the Arab American Action Network, run by Khalidi’s wife, which calls Israel’s founding a “catastrophe.”  Indeed the evil Hannity covered this on television recently.  Or one could point to to the high-level staffers who are Nation of Islam members, or to his past relationship with Palestinian activist and Islamist Ali Abunimah.  Or to the longtime spiritual adviser who declared Israel a “dirty word,” gave Louis Farrakhan a Lifetime Achievement award, and reprinted a Hamas manifesto.   Or to Obama’s coterie of advisers urging a more “even-handed” approach to the Israeli conflict, and his previously stated desire to unconditionally meet with with Iranian Pres. Ahmadinejad – who is known for denying the Holocaust and wanting to wipe Israel off the map.   Indeed, Obama cannot help but echo Arab-Palestinian positions, even in trying to make himself appear pro-Israel.

Finally, Ostroy is upset over the treatment of Michelle Obama.  He is rightly upset about the rumor of a videotape of Michelle Obama making a racially inflammatory comment, but fails to note that the chief proponent of those rumors has been Clinton supporter Larry Johnson, and that bloggers otherwise critical of Obama have had a hand in deflating the rumor.  Most of Obama’s critics will stick to her very public comments dumping on America while fueling her husband’s cult of personality.

Ostroy predicts there will be much more SwiftBoating of Obama, which is likely true — when the term is properly defined as exposing hard truths about Democrats.

    (h/t Memeorandum.)

Awaiting a turn at commission

I accuse. The various federal and provincial human rights commissions of discrimination. Against me. Because for years now I have spoken out against same-sex marriage, the excesses of the gay community and Muslim extremism in my column as well as on my radio and television shows.

A total of 250,000 people watch the latter and the radio program is on the largest station in Canada. Good Lord, I've even made speeches on these issues, addressing thousands of people.

I know that some people have complained about me to certain commissions, but I also know that the commissions in question have rejected the complaints. Yet as the B.C. Human Rights bunch takes on Maclean's magazine I am ignored. Why? It can only be because I am a Roman Catholic, half-Jewish, heterosexual, bald Conservative immigrant. It's offensive, unfair and horribly un-Canadian.

For years now these kangaroo courts -- fear not, Australian marsupials are not yet protected under our hate crimes legislation so I'm okay -- have gone after relatively anonymous teachers, tradesmen and church ministers who have few resources and limited connections. Come on guys, you're missing an opportunity here.

So here goes. Marriage is between a man and a woman. If two homosexuals want to live together that is entirely up to them, but it is not and can never be a marriage.

World's still round

The state may say otherwise, but if the state suddenly decides that the world is flat, the world is still round. I will never, while there is breath in my body, regard a same-sex union as a marriage.

Gay couples should not be allowed to adopt children, whether they are part of what they think of as a marriage or not. If at all possible children should be raised by a mother and a father.

While single parent families do obviously exist, a healthy society should aspire to a mother and father raising children. To consciously create families where one gender is not present is irresponsible and dangerous.

Islam may not be reconcilable with a western, pluralistic culture. There is not a single Islamic state that enjoys the liberal multiculturalism or respect for human rights and diversity taken for granted in almost all of the Christian-based world. The right to convert to another faith, the freedom to express unpopular opinions, the equality of women and so many other basic virtues are unusual if not impossible.

If we contrast Hindu India with its immediate neighbour Muslim Pakistan, for example, we see how one celebrates different religions and parliamentary representation while the other has been ruled by dictators and persecutes religious minorities.

Both countries were left by the British empire with equal economic potential, but while India is about to become an economic super power, Pakistan is in decay.

Only a bigot would argue that all terrorism is committed by Muslims. But only a fool would deny that Islam is the only religion that directly produces so much international terror, from Russia and Palestine to Britain and Spain and from the United States and Jordan to Indonesia and Egypt.

When sadistic brutes scream out verses from the Koran before cutting the head off a bound and screaming victim, who am I to deny that Islam is a factor? When terrorist leaders tell us time and time again that their Muslim faith inspires them, how dare we not take their word?

Dear human rights commission types, surely this is enough.

It’s easy to rant.. and fun to rip and snort superficially on a topic. Simple answers are fun to use as a club to beat others over the head: it’s a failing of our fallen human natures. Thus, here at FreeMarkSteyn, the Rants & Screeds Department doesn’t get much business– because we respect our audience too much to give them cheap & easy stuff.

With that said, it’s become clear through this controversy to a lot of Canadians– on the left and right and middle– that something is wrong with Canada. We have, quietly busy in our midst, soft totalitarians who are quietly working and hoping for various forms of soft-totalitarianism. Whether Jihad or a UN-mandated free-speech-free utopia, in one sense it doesn’t much matter.

Traitors In Our Midst

Of course, those Canadians who are not recent immigrants from various religious dictatorships are worse. The fact that they’re not advocating our takeover by a Hitler or Stalin may fool us slightly, as do the odd forms of warfare and political conflict we face today from non-state enemies.

Yet, to wish and work for the overthrow of the freedoms of some, then more, then everybody; to seek to muzzle faithful Christians; to create joke-courts which would make “Raving Roland” Freisler* proud (though he’d suggest the addition a handy guillotine to quiet uppity enemies of the state).. well, as one of the good lawyers said in BC this week, we’ve already been there, done that in the past 75 years...

The Audacity of the Democrats

By Rocco DiPippo

There was a pre-Lewinsky time, before moral relativism blurred America's vision, when associating with people like Jeremiah Wright and William Ayers would have automatically excluded someone from attaining the highest office in the land. Back then, anyone with well known connections to such America-averse personalities would have been rejected by a super-majority of the electorate during primary season and almost certainly blocked by the Democratic Party before they could have gotten to within a mile of the White House. But those days -- when patriotic, true liberals like Joe Lieberman were considered typical Democratic Party politicians -- are gone. Now politicians like Lieberman are banished to the Party's periphery and leftists, not liberals, like Denis Kucinich, Bernie Sanders, Jim McDermott, John Kerry, (who served in Vietnam), Jim McGovern, Patrick Leahy, Richard Durbin, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have replaced them.

Until recently in our history, a President Barack Obama would have been an impossibility. But given the political and ideological climate that exists today in America, the ascension of a leftist like Barack Obama into presidential politics makes perfect sense. Beliefs like domestic terrorist William Ayers's and racist, anti-US preacher Jeremiah Wright's are no longer met with utter scorn or a trip to behind the woodshed, but are embraced, promoted and defended by many Americans. Think MoveOn, International ANSWER, think hordes of young neo-communists and their indoctrinating, puppet-master Marx-spouting professors. Think Michael Moore, Cindy Sheehan, Noam Chomsky, Ward Churchill and his acolytes. Think NYU, Columbia, The New School and Harvard. Most importantly, ponder the makeup and direction of the Democratic Party leadership. Like Barack Obama and his radical friends, it is appallingly far Left.

Ideological descendants of Marx and Rousseau now lead the Democratic Party and they have turned it into a disloyal opposition to an increasingly accommodating GOP. They have molded the Party into a force working stridently and unashamedly against a Commander in Chief during wartime. They have made it a den of treachery devoted to American defeat in Iraq. They preside over an institution advised and influenced by moneyed, non-governmental groups and individuals with unquestionably anti-US agendas who help make the Party a pseudo-intellectual sinkhole filled with perverse, tried-and-failed ideas repulsive to the majority of Americans. Those ideas are shaped into agendas which are then forced on the public by an activist leftwing judiciary and by a major media and arts consortium shot through with utter disrespect, indeed contempt, for traditional American values, religions and institutions.

The Democratic Party has devolved into a club for the illegitimately aggrieved, the self-absorbed, the self-hating and the perpetually pissed-off. It is a sanctuary where solipsistic malcontents and their disjointed causes find refuge and support. It has long ceased being an earnest gathering of broad minds where man's timeless problems are examined against the backdrop of the Constitution and solutions to them proposed based on the actual realities of the human condition. It is now the political province of the intellectually deceased, where frightened, lock-step ideologues and other small men and women concoct and promote divisive, destructive, weird and cowardly policies developed within a not-so-quaint, quasi-Marxist stricture of gender, class and race.

So what does all of that have to do with the propulsion of Barack Obama to within a whisker of the Presidency? Everything. It could not have happened without the existence of a substantial, organized, internal anti-US Left and the approval and guidance of the Democratic leadership I describe. Obama is in step with that radical element and with that leadership. His views reflect their views, and he is now a central figure in the deceptive, destructive strategy to restore the Democrats to power, a strategy that has been in play since the US Supreme Court declared Albert Gore the loser of the 2000 presidential contest. "Don't call me a liberal," says Obama. In a precise, lawyerly sort of way he is being honest - he truly isn't a liberal, but he is a leftist.

At a glance, Obama's quick rise in the world of presidential politics is puzzling. His background, including his personal and political associations, is antithetical to the historical stature of the American presidency. It could also be said that given his non-traditional upbringing, his schooling in radical politics and his seeming preference for friends and mentors who view America disdainfully, he is antithetical to the traditional American Experience itself. Obama is young and he has less than one Senate term under his belt. Neither quality is particularly presidential. Questions of patriotism dog him, as do questions about his religious and ethnic heritage. Many of the people who tutored and supported him through his personal and political journeys from the backwaters of Indonesia to the main stage of US presidential politics are contemptuous of the US. Some of them publicly express outright hatred of the country Obama now seeks to lead.

So why is so controversial a candidate even in the running to be president?

Because he reflects his Party's leftist agenda, has unique, prodigious manipulative talents and equally impressive Hollywood attributes. These are  indispensable in closing out the dangerous, deliberate game the Democrats have been playing with America's security and its perceived stature in the world. It is a game that has been going on beneath our noses since the election of 2000. Its object is simple: the acquisition of power regardless of cost to the Nation. It is something the American people must be reminded of, made aware of, before they enter the voting booth in November.

A strategy of contention vs. the risk of irrelevance

The opening event setting the stage for Obama's ascension was the contentious 2000 election. When Bush was declared its winner, Democrats fumed that the election had been stolen by the Republicans. The promotion of that canard within leftwing and media circles and the personal quality of the resentment of Bush it provoked within the Democratic Party is important to mention, since a similar canard that morphed from it and became popularized --  "Bush Stole the Election," --  became the base justification for the future blizzard of untruths used to disparage the President. It also provided justification for the widespread disrespect and abuse President Bush endures to this day, disrespect that would be far more deserved if he had indeed illegally assumed power.

Less than a year after the 2000 election was finalized, September 11, 2001 arrived. In the baleful blink of a jihadist's eye, most of the issues that normally occupy the American polity in peaceful times were swept off the table. Issues that normally help Americans differentiate between the two major political parties and define those party's respective agendas -- health care, taxes, the environment, social programs and civil rights -- took a far-distant back seat to two far more pressing matters: Exacting justice for the 911 atrocities and protecting the homeland from additional attacks.

Since the American electorate historically views Republicans as being more competent and trustworthy than Democrats in matters of war and security, and since all other issues that Democrats could normally use to make political hay with had been blasted off the table by 911, the Party was facing the threat of irrelevance. There was another factor that did not bode well for the future political fortunes of the Democratic Party in the wake of the 911 attacks: George W. Bush had become an extraordinarily popular president.

Whatever patriotism was stoked within the hearts of Democratic Party leaders by that September Day of Infamy was likely tempered by an unsettling reality: If America stayed united behind George W. Bush and the Republicans during the coming military response to 911, the Democratic Party would be out of power for a long time.

As the wreckage of the Towers was being scoured for the remains of the murdered, the Democratic Party faced an extended stay in the political wilderness. It must have been an extraordinarily bitter pill to swallow, especially on the heels of its having lost the presidency by a tattered handful of contested votes. As things stood, Democrat prospects for winning it back anytime soon looked grim. Americans did not switch horses in the middle of a war -- unless they perceived a war to be headed towards defeat. This was especially true after the 911 attacks. The Democratic Party, with its conflict-averse, Vietnam-era mentality would be naturally unattractive to a war-time electorate seeking vengeance for the mass murder of its brothers and sisters. Pragmatically speaking, the only hope the Party had then, in terms of making inroads with post-911 American voters, rested on a single option: overlaying the US military response to 911 with a template  -- the rhetoric, look and feel of the Vietnam debacle of years earlier, portraying those directing and supporting the war and those fighting it on the ground, as corrupt, inept and malevolent.

As the Democrats weighed their narrow, post-911 political options and saw a grim future, at least a few of them might have considered Jimmy Carter's triumph on the heels of Vietnam and Watergate, and felt a flicker of hope.

A Vietnam strategy develops

Soon after 911, as America shifted into a wartime footing, leftists in academia and in the Legal Left began testing the waters of dissent by deconstructing Bush and the Republicans and blaming American foreign policy for the 911 attacks. Several professors at major Universities openly proclaimed their wishes to see America defeated and disgraced. One of them, Professor Nicholas DeGenova of Columbia University, announced to those attending a ‘peace' conference at the school shortly after the 911 attacks that he "wished for a million Mogadishus," a reference to the loss of 18 US serviceman during a mission to capture a warlord in Somalia in 1997.  DeGenova also said, "the only true heroes are those who find ways that help defeat the U.S. military," and referred to patriotism as a form of white supremacism adding that "My rejection of U.S. nationalism is an appeal to liberate our own political imaginations such that we might usher in a radically different world in which we will not remain the prisoners of U.S. global domination." Since DeGenova is an American collecting an excellent salary at a prestigious American university, it is puzzling who he meant by "we."

When the Democratic Party joined the academic Left's undermining of the Administration's military response to 911, a lethargic Republican public relations machine and inarticulate President were no match for the polish and reach of the influential leftwing media assisting the Democrats. Within months of 911 the Party and its media assistants began manufacturing anti-Bush, antiwar propaganda with impunity. Prominent leftwing intellectuals spoke openly of America's culpability in the 911 disaster even as the Towers still smoldered and the Nation wept, sowing seeds of doubt and divisiveness amongst a population that had been traumatized and then unified by the terrorist attacks. The press began chipping, then hammering away at the Administration's war policies and its domestic policies regarding security. When the debate on whether or not to invade Iraq came, there was no doubt which side of the discussion the press -- and most of the Democrats -- would be on.

Predictably, the historically anti-US, European socialist Left closed ranks with the Democrats and the academic Left. It also fell in line with the neo-communist-organized antiwar movement in America that was taking shape. With the first wave of antiwar street protests, the Democratic Party's mission to reacquire power lurched into high gear. That mission would be accomplished at the risk of weakening America's security and at the expense of her standing in the world.

Shortly after the US invaded Iraq, Party leaders and their friends in the media started kidney-punching America, pounding away at the wartime president, deriding his administrators and his policies, harping on and grossly magnifying each setback in Iraq.

On the home front, every Bush policy designed to protect America from further attacks was framed and presented by Democratic Party leaders and leftwing 527 groups as direct assaults on the US Constitution and as being destructive to the Bill of Rights. The press followed the Party's antagonistic lead, flooding the news with disproportionate coverage of subjects like Abu Ghraib, Haditha, US so-called torture and rendition; so-called domestic spying; the so-called rights of terrorists in Guantanamo; the so-called evils of the Patriot Act; the so-called lies of George W. Bush; the so-called warmongering of Dick Cheney and the so-called greed and evil of defense-related corporations like Halliburton.

The effect was to frame isolated incidents of US atrocities and other malfeasances that occur in any war as emblematic of the entire Iraq enterprise. A narrative of an administration hell-bent on imperialistic conquest, spying on Americans and shredding the Constitution concretized within most American and international newsrooms. And who can forget the endemic, Left-generated conflation of the Bush Administration with the Nazis and the invention and promotion of theories that Bush and Cheney planned and directed the attacks of 911 to advance a secret desire of turning America into a fascist state. Those theories were boosted by prominent leftists, including respected author Gore Vidal, who wrote a book promoting such a theory. The collective message of the anti-Bush noise machine was clear and diabolical: The President of the United States was a bigger threat to world peace than men like Osama Bin Laden were. Bush was more evil than Adolf Hitler.

The withering attacks on the Bush Administration took their toll. Bush was slowly becoming a pariah, even within his own political party. His approval ratings, burdened by the vicious attacks on his character and constant attacks on his war policies, sank like a stone.

By the 2004 election, the Democrats' strategy of throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Bush was poised to render results. But a lackluster campaign by a wooden candidate, John Kerry, and serious attacks on Kerry's credibility and patriotism by 250 decorated war veterans caused the Party's presidential effort to fail, but just barely.

In spite of that loss, or perhaps buoyed by the closeness of it, the Democrat assault on America's President and on America's war-time morale intensified as the 2006 congressional elections approached. Efforts to stabilize a post-Saddam Iraq were sputtering and support for Bush and Republican politicians sagged in direct proportion to every real, over-reported and media invented setback there.

It is common knowledge, supported by history, that war is fraught with uncertainties and surprises that cannot always be planned in advance for. It is the side in a conflict that best adapts and adjusts in response to those vagaries that usually wins. The slaughter of 5,000 US soldiers at Omaha beach in a single day during WWII was not trumpeted by the US media to America and to the world as evidence of imminent US defeat against the Nazis, nor did US politicians of that era cry for withdrawal from the larger battle when disasters like Omaha Beach and Corregidor happened. They did not publicize enemy successes during the vicious battles of Guadalcanal nor did they pronounce defeat whenever Americans suffered setbacks while fighting the fanatical Japanese. But throughout every phase of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts nearly every negative event, every disaster or perceived disaster, exploded across the front pages of the major US papers and was broadcast by Democrats from the halls of Congress as evidence of Bush's malevolence, stupidity or incompetence and as evidence of impending American defeat. Michael Yon, the Iraq conflict's Ernie Pyle, best sums up the result of that grinding media assault on the Iraq War and its American leaders:

"Enemy dominance of the media battle space translated quite directly into military setbacks. Terrorists from many countries swarmed into Iraq to be part of the victory they saw happening on the TV screens."

Deliberately or not, the Democratic Party and the leftwing media, with their endless criticisms of the Iraq conflict, and their endless public comparisons of that war to Vietnam, sent a direct message to the rag-tag army of ultra-violent terrorists in Iraq who were detonating car bombs in crowded marketplaces, beheading and mutilating civilians and killing American and Coalition soldiers: "Keep the violence up just a bit longer. We'll take care of wearing down America's will to win from within, just like during Vietnam."

Even violent, under-equipped sociopaths facing the most powerful military on earth know a gift horse when they see one, and react accordingly.

On the other hand, nearly every bit of positive war news was whispered in quiet sentences or totally ignored. Today, with the Iraq venture steadily closing in on success, the amount of news about Iraq has slowed to barely a drip. That is quite telling.

Under the deliberate, massive media barrage of negative news about the war and hampered by a lack of coherent strategy with which to counter it, Republican prospects for the retention of Congressional majorities in 2006 looked shaky at best. Then the Congressman Larry Craig sex scandal broke and the Republican majorities in the House and Senate were lost.

In less than five years, the Democratic Party had gone from being an increasingly irrelevant political minority to controlling both houses of Congress.

A Strategy Emboldened

Buoyed by the 2006 election success of their Vietnam-era strategy, Democrat leaders and other leftists began openly calling Iraq an ‘unjust' war, an "unwinnable" war and relying on the short memories of most Americans to hide the fact that many prominent Democrats had actually voted to authorize it. Jesse Macbeth, Jimmy Massey, Scott Beauchamp and other antiwar frauds who admitted faking tales of atrocities committed by US soldiers were praised by the press and the Democrats as heroic dissenters against the evil Bush war machine, their false tales of butchery and bloodlust spread far and wide. Widespread, positive coverage was given to antiwar, anti-American, pro-terrorist activists like Cindy Sheehan, who was sanctimoniously christened America's "Peace Mom" by leading Democrats and the leftwing media, while true American heroes, patriots like Paul R. Smith and Jason L. Dunham, both Medal of Honor winners, both killed in the act of protecting America from her enemies, received virtual media silence for their heroism and sacrifice and little public acknowledgment from Democrat politicians.

The press and the Democrats did however publicly acknowledge American soldiers when they were killed, when they spun tales of atrocities, when they groused or when they returned home and fell through the cracks. They wanted Americans to be ashamed of their soldiers, to be ashamed of the Commander-in-Chief, to be ashamed of America itself. They needed America on its knees -- disillusioned, angry at its leaders and their policies -- hopeless, sick of hearing about the war and demoralized because then, out of desperation, they would naturally look to Democratic politicians for relief.

The technique of creating discontent and "talking all things Bush down" paid big dividends for the Democrats in 2006. Devoid of credible ideas and solutions, they had nevertheless worked a strategy leading to the re-acquisition of at least some of the political power they had lost during their wilderness years after the Reagan Revolution. The 2006 election confirmed the effectiveness of their "destroy Bush" election strategy. And so the Democratic Party's attacks on Bush and the Republicans increased to a ferocious level, even as Iraq turned a corner towards security and political stability.

When to the Party's dismay the Bush troop surge took hold and the situation in Iraq began improving, the Democrats' defeatist rhetoric reached a desperate, farcical crescendo: "The war is lost," (even though objective measurements indicated that it was being won) crowed many Democrats, including prominent ones like Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, John Murtha, Edward Kennedy, John Kerry and Barack Obama. Prominent Democrat John Murtha publicly tried and convicted US Marines involved in the Haditha incident before those Marines even went to trial. "Bush lied us into war" became the catch-phrase of almost the entire Democratic Party leadership, even though before the war had commenced many of those same Democrats had access to the same information that the Bush Administration used to justify it.

Power at any cost indeed, even at the defeat and humiliation of one's own country.

                                                                  ***

Now the 2008 election is upon us. Whether it is Iraq or Afghanistan, the economy or the overblown dangers of anthropogenic global warming, the Democratic Party and its media shills continue crafting and pounding home messages telling us that our national problems, real and imagined, are caused by Bush and the Republicans, They tell us that due to Bush and his policies, our nation is an evil one, our nation is hated by the world, our nation is fractured into pieces, our nation is murdering innocents, our nation is the world's biggest polluter, our nation is a den of racism, our nation is stingy, our citizens are impoverished, our economy has been destroyed. Collectively, this endless stream of buckshot propaganda adds up to a single, powerful and demoralizing statement: America has come apart at the seams - and George W. Bush and the Republicans are to blame for it.

Though the Democrats and their media shills are responsible for creating that illusion, Bush and the Republicans are to blame for generally ignoring or responding weakly to the Left's relentless assault on America's war-time morale. Instead of using the power of the White House pulpit to broadcast a steady, convincing message on the importance of presenting a unified national front in the face of totalitarian Islam, America is instead often treated to incongruous platitudes like, "Islam is a religion of peace." Instead of a forceful, direct calling-out of the Democratic Party, the State Department and CIA on their numerous subversions of Bush policies, those subversions are usually referred to by the White House as "disagreements."

Because of the Administration's seeming refusal to conduct investigations leading to the indictment of those leaking classified security information to the press, and thereby to the enemy, the Democrat-leftwing press consortium has been given implied consent to inundate America with torrents of articles and highly publicized tell-all books from former government officials, some revealing sensitive war-time information, most of them highly critical of America's Commander-in-Chief -- all published while American soldiers and civilians were, (and are), on the ground in combat areas, directly in harm's way.

With the exception of the Vietnam War, never before in America's history have such things happened while hostilities were ongoing. And what happened during Vietnam was tame in comparison. Worst of all, due to the subversive Democrat-media barrage, and crippled by its public relations ineptness, Bush and the Republicans could never quite convince the American people of a simple reality: that they are all in the fight of their lives against an implacable, dedicated, totalitarian death cult, one seeking nothing less than America's utter destruction, and that the fight demands focus and sacrifice from all Americans. Instead of rousing, convincing, patriotic speeches, the public was usually treated to lame utterances from Bush like, "Its hard work . . . we're working hard . . . we're making progress."

The end result of the inability of Bush and his PR team to own and promote the Big Ideas necessary to have focused America on the prize of victory in Iraq and on a greater victory over the worldwide forces of totalitarian Islam, is best summed up by three, short sentences written on a whiteboard in a US Marines barracks:

                                                         America is not at war.

The Marine Corp is at war.

                                                        America is at the mall.

                                                                      ***

It is no wonder the American electorate has slipped into a foul mood -- little wonder why it seems that its heart is not in the fight against the totalitarian theocrats who threaten it. For seven years Americans have been pounded with messages that their country and its leaders are unjust, warmongering, and evil and hated by all -- it deserves whatever evil it gets.

America now has serious doubts about itself. Its citizens have been pummeled with those terrible messages for so long now, that many of them believe them to be true. They are vulnerable to the Democratic Party's sudden mantra of Hope and Change and Progress. In a nutshell, here are the mechanics of the crude, hate-based initiative the Democratic Party and its media wing have forced on America since 2001:

1) Invent, inflate, and over-report bad war news. Tie all bad news to Bush and/or Republicans. At the same time, ignore or downplay good news as it relates to Bush, the Republicans or the war(s).

2) Create the illusion of widespread, honest dissent to Bush policies by giving plenty of airtime to leftwing groups and individuals historically antagonistic toward the projection of US, and only US, power. Fail to report the true agendas of those groups -- when covering antiwar, anti-Bush protests and events, make sure to meticulously portray antiwar marches as spontaneous gatherings of mainstream, mom and pop Americans.

3) Downplay, ignore and disparage American success wherever you find it.

4) Exalt in, sympathize with and mythologize America's enemies, vilify and deconstruct its protectors.

5) Downplay America's generosity and righteousness. Recast a mission that includes saving a nation from a murdering brute and his rapist, sociopath sons as a brutal occupation in the pursuit of American Empire.

6) Fill the Nation's airwaves, from sea to shining sea, with questionable and sometimes outright false tales of Bush-related misery, butchery, fraud and waste.

7) Foment as much national anxiety and hatred of the Republican leader as money and can buy. George Soros and other moneyed leftists will fund you. Give airtime and print coverage to leftist radicals and Democrats who call Bush a war criminal. Present those radicals and their crazy plans to try President Bush and Vice President Cheney for "war crimes" as worthy of consideration.

8)  Provide coverage to leftwing intellectuals and scientists making anti-Bush statements. Present them as legitimate, non-partisan experts in their fields. Publicize their specious, politicized findings, present those findings as non-partisan, accurate and objective.

9) Present major news coverage of every antiwar protest you can find, whether it draws 100 people or 10,000 people, ignore all pro-US, pro-Iraq War, pro-troop rallies completely or portray their attendees as violence-prone, fringe-lunatic jingoists.

10) Blame a hurricane's aftermath on Bush. Give news coverage to racists and Democrat crackpots who say Bush and Cheney actually caused the hurricane and blew up levees to kill African Americans. Keep that Bush-hate buzz alive at all costs.

11) Give airtime and print coverage to groups and individuals accusing George W. Bush of having engineered and directed the 911 attacks. Remember, it is not the credibility of accusations that count in shaping public opinion now, but the seriousness and sheer volume of accusations that do.

12) To sow further strife, anxiety and confusion, continue stoking the fires of racial tension and class warfare.

13) Once the onslaught of lies, moral relativisms and crazy notions have created a self-sustaining, luciferous, widespread unhappiness and confusion, dangle a fat bait of silence and tranquility -- of Hope, Change and Progress -- crowning your deceptive achievement by hooking the same fish you made hungry.

That is the immoral, destructive strategy used by the Democratic Party, even as our soldier sons and daughters have been fighting and sometimes dying to protect us, in the years since 911 to recapture power it unjustly covets as its Divine right.

Now, a master psychological fisherman, Barack Obama, dangles a bait of salvation. As a highly experienced practitioner of Saul Alinsky's radical arts, he is perfect for the job. Those who know Obama well, like Mike Kruglik, who helped train him in Alinsky's methods would agree:

"He [Obama] was a natural, the undisputed master of agitation. . .  As with the panhandler, he could be aggressive and confrontational. With probing, sometimes personal questions, he would pinpoint the source of pain in their lives, tearing down their egos just enough before dangling a carrot of hope that they could make things better."

It is truly audacious of the Democrats to entice us with their slick-tongued messiah, one who appears out of nowhere and graciously offers to scrape clean and sanitize the same plate of defeat he, his party and their assistants in the media served to America for nearly eight years in the middle of a war. Soon we will see if a majority of the American electorate accepts that offer, or if it rejects it, sending the Democratic Party back to confront the same irrelevance it risked the safety and security of our nation to avoid.

Who In The Hell Is Behind $5 Gas?

John Hinderaker explains:

For several decades, the Democratic Party has pursued policies designed to drive up the cost of petroleum, and therefore gas at the pump. Remarkably, the Democrats don't seem to have taken much of a political hit from the current spike in gas prices. Probably that's because most people don't realize how different the two parties' energy policies have been.

Now, although virtually all of this will not matter to Obama's ardent followers who are not swayed by logic, reason, or truth, and to whom, regardless of his positions, his gaffes, his past, or his associations, he is an idol, it can make a difference in educating others. Please pick and choose from amongst these videos and share them with your loved ones, relatives, friends, neighbors, and others and ask them to do the same, or simply have them come to this site and view them and then pass them on

We can make a difference to arrest and halt the spread of this: .

Nothing you can say or do will convince these people otherwise...

Because I am the one they and I have been waiting for...and I am lovin' it.

Those wild eyed people represent the millions of Americans raised in the government day-care and indoctrination centers we call public schools who did not have, or would not listen to, parents and others who tried to counterweight the garbage they heard at school...who have been raised on 60 second sound bite time spans and know no better.

You have other tens of millions on the dole who will vote for him regardless of position because he promises to keep pilfering the public largess for them.

Still othes of millions will vote for him simply because he is black.

Other millions will vote for him because they know exactly who he is and what he represents and agree with his anti-American positions.

The first three are all what is termed, useful idiots, a term coined by Lenin for the dupes he got to support him.

Against this it is left to us to educate, arouse, and amass the tens of millions of Americans who understand and hold fast to the foundational principles our constitutional republic rests upon...many of them the bitter, rural Americans clinging to their guns and religion that Obama so arrogantly spoke of.

Finally, understand that this is not the first time in history that rock-star, messianic status has been conferred on a populist, charismatic individual in order to hand them the reigns of power. Although there are many critical differences, still it is important when you consider the danger that this candidate poses to American foreign policy, our economy, our social fabric, and to the war we are fighting against fanatical Islamic Jihad terorists, to note the following comparison:

A populsitic, charismatic, self-serving individual has a way of mesmerizing foolish people looking for an idol...then and now.

It is clear to this author that Barack Hussein Obama is the apex of the hate-America, domestic enemy in this country. His election as president would be the greatest coup any enemy has ever scored against this country and could easily lead to the worst, horrific disaster in our nation's history.

FASCISM HAS COME TO CANADA– “In a scathing editorial in the most recent issue of The Catholic Insight (CI), Fr. Alphonse de Valk, the editor-in-chief of the magazine, argues that the ideology of the “divinization” of the state that has historically been called “fascism”, is fast encroaching on the rights and freedoms of religious believers in Canada” …. The kangaroo court judge in this case is a Tory patronage appointee, a divorce lawyer from Lethbridge named Lori Andreachuk, (pictured at left). That's her expertise: divorce law. Not constitutional law; not freedom of speech or freedom of religion. And it shows.

Last November, she convicted Boissoin. Last week she ordered her "remedy".

It is the most revolting order I have ever seen in Canada. Ever.

Creepy antisemitism caught on the MyBarackObama site, and quickly scrubbed

June 8, 2008 04:39 PM by see-dubya

Good Lord. I knew that things were pretty bad on Obama’s “MyBO” social networking site, but I thought they had things under control.

They most certainly do not.

As I’ve been writing this post, they took that site down. But I’ve got a screencap of the whole thing;

No wonder creeps like George Galloway feel so comfortable with Obama.

H/T to LGF, where Charles notes that this isn’t a fluke. His search across the MyBO site for “Jewish Lobby” produced thousands of results.

MORE! LGF is picking up lots of good’uns on the MyBO site. You’re not going to believe this one:

Jemaah Islamiyah for Obama? Um, maybe that’s a spoof…probably a spoof…but Charles notes it’s been up since March 31st.

I’m pretty sure these Anti-Israel 9/11 Truth Creeps For Obama are real, though.27 Comments

LGF reports that the Obama campaign are “now blocking Google’s cache from saving their pages. And they’ve also removed their pages from the Internet Archive and the Coral archives.” This is a sign of the type of open government Obama has promised.

Camp Obama not so good at sanitizing its website [Karl]

Earlier today, I considered — then discarded — the notion of blogging about the “Socialists for Obama” community blog at MyBarackObama spewing paranoid bile about “the Jewish lobby.”  The MyBO crew duly removed the post first noted by Doug Ross.

But the MyBO people took longer to purge the post about “The Israeli Connection to 9/11″:

israeli connection

And as I write this, the blog still has posted “An open letter to our next president Barack Obama”:

boopenletter

Juan gave the same book a rave review at Amazon, along with kind words for a couple of Truther tomes and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

Also up at the moment is a post on how “The Israeli Lobby did a good job at promoting Hillary in Kentucky”:

zionist press

The Zionist press likely did so because Clinton is a “Corporate Zionist” herself:

corp zionist

Granted, it is tough to argue with the “liar” accusation, but it should be pretty easy for the MyBO web crew to read a screen of postings once the original bile has been identified.  Thus, one wonders why Barack Obama is so keen to keep the “Socialists for Obama” community blog on his website.  Or maybe not.

O, Stalinoid Canada

Tomorrow's Washington Times continues their series on Canada's abusive and corrupt human rights commissions. This time, it's to report on the Conservative government's tentative first steps to review the CHRC's operations and its prosecution of "hate speech". An excerpt:

The filing is a change of heart for Mr. Nicholson and the Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. In May, Mr. Nicholson's office filed a 50-page legal submission in support of the commission's attempt to stop a defendant from cross-examining the commission's investigators on their tactics. The submission also praised the work of Canada's human rights commissions and tribunals.

News of the submission led to Mr. Nicholson and Mr. Harper drawing heavy criticism, and many conservative and civil-liberties groups had threatened to boycott the Conservative Party's fundraising efforts despite the possibility of a summer election.

Unless I've missed it, I haven't seen the Conservative motion reported anywhere in Canada, other than in the St. Catharines newspaper, hometown to the MP, Rick Dykstra, who moved the motion.

The motion has not yet been adopted by the Justice Committee, since that committee hasn't had a vote in weeks. But I do think it's newsworthy, as the Times does, that Nicholson has abandoned his earlier posture of stonewalling, and is now calling for a review. I hope other Canadian newspapers pick up on the story.

The Washington Times article is well written, accurate, and comprehensive. What a complete contrast to what appeared in the Toronto Star.

Global AIDS epidemic is a myth admit world experts

AIDS was a politically correct disaease, the first in world history.

Had people with AIDS been quarantined like we did for other communicable diseases, many, many lives would not have lost.

The ugly truth about AIDS is that it is spread largely by risky sexual behaviors, and that gay men are highly promiscuous, to this day, 25 years later, they are still engaging in multiple sexual partners without sexual protection.

They made the whole world participate in their agony, while they continued the practices that killed fellow gays and unsuspecting straight partners(wives).

We have known how to stop AIDS for 25 years. That it is still around today is prima facie evidence of the complicity of the gay community in its continuation.

It is a very ugly truth.

Michael Pfleger returns June 16: “He’s a black Jesus stuck in a white man’s body”

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 9, 2008 04:24 AM

Well, it looks like the Catholic Church in Chicago has lost whatever balls it found when it temporarily suspended Pfoaming-at-the-mouth preacher of hate Michael Pfleger for his racially poisoned sermon a few weeks ago. Because he’s baaaack. Again.

Apparently, though, there are couples dying for him to perform their matrimonial services–and countless more followers who can’t wait for more histrionic white-bashing:

"You are not judges, you are jokers"

The Robson Square Witch Trials, as reported in the Washington Times. Elmasrey did not return their calls. Tarek Fatah did.

"If at all there will be a anti-Muslim backlash, it will be because the Canadian Islamic Congress and Mr. Elmasry contributed significantly to it," Mr. Fatah told the Washington Times.

A practicing Muslim, Mr. Fatah accused the Canadian Islamic Congress of being agent provocateurs for Islamists by trying to provoke such a backlash.

"My feeling is - and I could be wrong - but they're trying to trigger a backlash against Muslims, so that the imams and the Hamas and the Hezbollah people back in the Middle East can say: 'Look, we told you that the West is at war with Islam,'" he said.

I Predict That Hillary Will Bring To The Obama Campaign

... the same sort of enthusiasm and influence that Bill brought to hers;

Upon taking control of Congress in 2007 the Democrats found themselves running simpatico with those terminally elite nations who sniffed with disdain at American individualism while being strangled by the tentacles of their own statism. Emboldened by these openly chummy alliances, and sensing a GOP in the mood to slit its own wrists and die, the Democrats looked across the breakfast table at Hillary Clinton in her sensible clothes and felt a little disappointed. There she sat — a hard worker, smart, always willing to do what it took to win. By and large, she’d been a good helper, delivering the pretty little votes, raising the pretty big dollars, entertaining, organizing, laughing, gazing, and lying when she had to, for the good of the family.
