A short history of LGF for the lurkers:

Evil Force Part I
Once upon a time, there was a blog called LGF where Fact Checking and Reason was paramount and people posted from all over the world.  Most of the posters were brilliant and quite accomplished in their real lives.  Emotion, anger and frustration was welcome, but if a factual statement was made, a poster was expected to back it up with documentation.  Lots of lawyers on at that time, like Jheka.  One poster back then worked for Steve Emerson.  I had the pleasure of meeting him in DC because of LGF.  I started posting in the spring of ‘03, so I was a newbie compared to reaganite, rayra, EW1, Swampy, Jheka and others here.

This blog faced the threat of the islamists with defiance, knowledge, and much humor.  LGFers were meeting each other in the real world all over the USA as well as in Europe and even Israel, IIRC.  Friday Night Drinking Threads were a break from the serious issues.  It was our mission to make each other laugh on those wonderful nights.

An evil force showed up who thought that a solution was to nuke Europe because of what they did to the Jews.  If Israel got attacked, that was the way to go.  This was after nuking all of the ME.  Most of the posters either treated him as a leper, and many engaged his irrationality.  Some, though, fell into his darkness.  Eventually his need for power and control on LGF did him in when he lied to egg on yet another conflict between two well respected posters and he finally got banned.  What took Charles so long, I don’t know because a lot of stress was caused by that evil force.

After that banning all was well again in the LGF family.  Rathergate was exposed, bringing in a flood of people who wanted to post and LGF lost its intimacy, I thought.  Did not matter, because the message of LGF was too important and so many people still needed to be educated.

We started noticing that LGF had advertisements popping up.  Good for Charles!  He had a web design business then, and we were glad that he could possibly afford to do this full time.

Evil Force Part II

After Rathergate, another evil force showed up.  This one was much more aggressive than the first.  This dark cloud not only wanted the ME nuked, but wanted people crossing the border machine gunned, laughed at the Beslan deaths, stated that our Military was incompetent, trashed our President and the entire Administration, etc.  Again, most of the posters did not take this person seriously, many challenged it, yet others started to give in to that Dark Side.  Human nature, I guess. 

Meanwhile, the meet ups continued.  Life long friendships and relationships developed.  After one meet up that ‘Nam Grunt had, pictures and posts about how great the party was were posted.  The vitriole seemed to escalate by the Dark Ones and turned into personal attacks on many of the posters who attended.  Charles did not ever start any threads about these real life get togethers.  We thought it would be fun for him to do so, but not our call.  It is his house.

Finally the Second Evil got so bad in her attacks that many of us long time posters were getting called skanks, Heathers, etc.  reaganite was disparaged as being full of shit about his Military service and assignments to the USSS, even though he posted what EOD Techs do to try to allay her suspicions.  The Dark One then started a blog to continue to disparage him.  He did post several threads for the benefit of LGF over his time posting there, and e-mailed Charles with unclassified information that would help the efforts of LGF.  One was his personal account of walking in President Reagans funeral position as part of his last detail. The Dark One also went after any poster that challenged her evil, defeatist emotion.

Posting became frustrating, because no one could post on any thread without getting attacked unless they agreed with that evil force.  Many e-mailed and implored Charles on the blog to ban her.

The ads on the blog increased.  Posts numbers were jumping.  As the posts increased, so did the number of ads, and income for Charles.

DU and KOS were off the charts for the left, so why not have LGF get some of that blog ad income?  Of course those two blogs are made of nutcases who post all day, so the theory was in all of frustration of why this person was tolerated was that Evil and Emotion was good for LGF.

We disagreed at the lack of ethics as we saw it.

Eleven of us got banned, as well as the Evil Force.

We are all over here now.  Over the year, anyone who posts here and at LGF gets banned.  We only ban idiots here.

This was what LGF was back in the day.  No idiots, no one posting shit just to see their Published Posts, no one whining about the End Times and the Doomed Western Civilization and no one trashing everything good about our world.  We talk about guns and strength again here and stupid shit sometimes.

And cussing is not a bad thing.

Very good.  I think the situation is even more dire now, though, with even some of the worst hinting at walking over the most trivial of matters.

Just a Rathergate baby here, but then, those were truly the salad days AtS.  ( ATS means "across the street"-- acronym for LGF... )

 Regardless of what happened since or what happens in the future, you have to give Charles “The Throbbing Memo.” That was simply brilliant.  A pity it ran downhill, but nothing lasts forever.

Just to finish this debacle, please note that “Jheka” registered at least six accounts at LGF. Several other of the GCP people have done the same thing, and have been using these dishonest accounts to cause trouble at LGF.

Those of you defending these people need to have a reality check. This is really ugly, obsessed behavior.

WTF is he going on about?  Ed is the only person I can think of that’s registered at both sites and posts regularly at both, and maybe Odinist.  Nobody else gives a shit.

He’s lying, yet again.  Many many posters back then had multiple nics for various reasons.  I had Taarna to poke fun of Geepers with, Jheka had the Pirate one (for talk like a pirate day IIRC) and the Blitz one for April Fools day.  This IS NOT A SECRET and never was!  Many got Heather nics to poke fun of the idiots with.

His going on like these are new is a lie, and he damned well knows it - if he had any honesty left that is.

What we are witnessing folks, is a full blown breakdown.  This is making the likes of the Skanky Sunday pale in comparison.

Norfolk Beating Caught on Tape

A violent beating in Norfolk is caught on tape.  The 13 year-old victim and his family believe the attack could have been racially motivated.

The victim in this case is a 13 year-old white boy, Damien O’Rourke.  The group who attacked him is made up of all African American teenagers.  Damien and his family believe the teens may have picked the fight because Damien is white.

“I was going to play football with my friends. The next thing I know when I got there, there was like, seven black kids who said they were going to beat me up and they started beating me up,” says Damien.

Damien and his family say the violent fight was unprovoked.

“They were kicking me and punching me in the face. They weren’t aiming for nothing except my face.”

Damien and his family just moved to the area thinking it’d be a nice place to live.

“We don’t know what we’re going to do now because we can’t even let our kid go outside and play,” says Reesha Price, Damien’s mother.

Reesha says she got the call Saturday afternoon saying Damien was badly beaten just blocks away from their home.  When she reached her 13 year-old son, her heart broke.  She saw a bloodied and swollen face.

“He was dazed. It makes your stomach hurt.  It makes your stomach hurt.  There’s no, I mean I was just thanking God his head wasn’t split open.”

Damien says kids at his new school, including one of the kids involved in the fight, treated him badly for a time because he is white.  Now his family believes their skin color could have been what led to the first punch being thrown.

“I do kind of think it was racist. I think if he was black he wouldn’t have gotten beat up like that,” says Reesha.

We saw Norfolk police interviewing people in the area of the fight and they said their Gang Unit will get in touch with the family Monday morning.  In the meantime, Damien is planning to go to school on Monday.

UPDATE - Police identify three suspects in taped beating

Norfolk Police say they’ve identified three of the people seen beating a 13-year-old in a videotape shown to WAVY.com by the victim’s mother.

According to a spokesperson, Investigators from the Gang Squad have identified 3 of the suspects, and are in the process of identifying the other individuals involved.

They say charges will be filed against all of those involved. They also say that the victim, Damien O’Rourke, knew at least one of the assailants. Police said investigators are also trying to determine what circumstances occurred leading up to the assault.

They also said that, contrary to some statements, the assault does not appear to be racially motivated according to information gathered by investigators that we are unable to release.

So it’s already been determined that it’s not a hate crime.

Amazing.

A painter passing through Minneapolis

When it was announced this past June that Gordon Lightfoot would be performing in Minneapolis at one of my favorite venues on September 22, I ran over to the theater box office and bought first row tickets before I realized I was otherwise committed that evening. I looked to give the tickets to someone who might enjoy the show as much as I would have and found Peter Zeller of the Center of the American Experiment. Peter saw the show this past Saturday and has graciously filed this comprehensive report:

The old ballad master Gordon Lightfoot continues to tour and sell out his gigs, satisfying a full house of 2,000 Saturday night at the State Theatre in downtown Minneapolis. The Canadian folk singer, now 68, recovered from a near-fatal abdominal hemorrhage that left him in a two month long coma five years ago. Age and time have made his emotion-laden lyrics that much more moving and he enjoys a tight bond with his fans.

Lightfoot originally gained recognition as a songwriter in the mid-1960s and his songs have been recorded by greats such as Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and Elvis. Later his unique songwriting and singing style established his trademark folk sound, and some now consider him one of the greatest singer/songwriters ever. He’s been nominated for five Grammies and sold over 10 million albums. His hits include “If You Could Read My Mind” (#5 in 1970), “Sundown” (#1 in 1974), “Carefree Highway” (#10 in 1974), and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” (#2 in 1976).

Saturday night’s performance featured these hits as well as other crowd pleasers including “Beautiful,” "Canadian Railroad Trilogy,” “Cotton Jenny,” “Don Quixote,” “In My Fashion,” and “Rainy Day People.” Lightfoot has remarked that he enjoys being free to concentrate on his shows, and not being under the constant pressure to produce that comes with being signed to a record contract. His loyal band members include lead/rhythm guitarist Terry Clements (since 1969), Rick Haynes on bass (since 1967), drummer Barry Keane (since late/mid-1970s), and “newcomer” Mike Heffernan on keyboards (since 1980).

“The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” the tale of the tragic November 10, 1975 storm related sinking of an ore carrier on Lake Superior that claimed the lives of all 29 crew members, has always claimed a special place in the hearts of most Minnesotans. The producers of “The Simpsons” had wanted to use the song in the “Radio Bart” episode but it never happened after Lightfoot insisted that they get okays from the families of all 29 crew members who had died. Following the 1984 election, the musical political satire group The Capitol Steps recorded a parody titled, “The Wreck of the Walter Fritz Mondale.” Also, one-of-a-kind Minnesota radio personality Tommy Mischke made the national media when he interviewed an expert on the tragedy by singing all his questions to the tune of the song. The unforewarned expert, however, answered each question in an academic manner.

Uncovered emotion, often personal, comes through so clear in the songs of the man that Bob Dylan has referred to as one of his favorite songwriters. There are the historical ballads and songs of love and love lost, but it’s hard not to miss the many themes of heartache and loneliness seen in other songs he performed like “Never Too Close,” “Shadows,” “Clouds of Loneliness,” and “Restless.”

I’m sure, like all of us, he’s mellowed some over the years, but perhaps he has a few more wilder days behind him than the rest of us. He had done a fair amount of drinking (though he’s been sober since the early ‘80s) and a fair amount of messing around. Currently separated from his second wife, he had six children by four women, and his onetime girlfriend Cathy Smith’s claim to infamy is that she’s the one who shot up John Belushi when he died from a drug overdose.

One way he sees himself is as “A Painter Passing Through.” Here’s part of his song by that name:

Never in my life, never will it pass
I am still alone, remembering at last
Once upon a time, once upon a day when
I was in my prime, once along the way.

Front row seats have many benefits, but unfortunately acoustics (in this case) weren't one of them. It was difficult to hear the words to his heart-tingling songs. Even so, I won’t soon forget my close-up view of the old legendary songwriter, in the spotlight at center stage, delivering a heartfelt performance of his life’s work on his well-worn guitar.

What's The Opposite Of Diversity?

University. A long-time reader writes;

I'm a 3rd year polisci/history major at the University of Victoria, and since Thursday, this has been the #1 issue here:

"UVic Students’ Society (UVSS) chairperson Tracy Ho broke a 6-6 deadlock at a Sept. 10 UVSS board meeting by voting that the military should be banned from the SUB.

"The motion was passed to clarify a policy amendment passed 10-1 by the last UVSS board of directors in April.That board amended the society’s policy on military issues to include, “The Society is opposed to the militarization of Canadian Society, and is unsupportive of a Canadian military establishment that violates international law and human rights.” [...]

"The ban voted in on Sept. 10 means that the Canadian Armed Forces will be unable to attend the annual recruiting fair put on by UVic’s Career Services in the SUB every January. The Armed Forces attended last year’s recruiting fair."

Basically, a radical leftist anti-war organization with a membership around 20 decided to table a motion at the UVic student society meeting earlier this month to ban recruiters, and the UVSS board passed it, deciding we students are too "uninformed" to make our own decisions. The nearly 20,000 students at UVic have been painted with the same brush as these dozen or so wackos, and we're not going to take it.

There has been massive outcry in response to the student union board's decision. So far, it has resulted in the formation of a pro-recruiter facebook group numbering 271 in less than 48 hours, reactions from the Army.ca forums, another facebook group at the University of Toronto (if you can believe it) condemning UVic, and a massive stack of letters to the student newspaper. The facebook group founder is going to be speaking to The Zone 91.3fm radio station here in town, several organizers (myself included) will be passing out anti-UVSS flyers on campus, and the local media are being informed. Even students who are against the war have joined up with us because they recognize this for the blatant violation of democracy it is.

I'm just sending this to you to help dismiss the image of UVic students as a bunch of pinkos and hippies. The majority of students here want recruiters on campus, and we're going to fight for our right to have them here at the upcoming student society meeting on monday. There is going to be massive attendance, as well as a major takedown of the radical lefties who have hijacked our democratic process.

I just submitted my application to the air force last week, so I'm not about to let this down.

Both Hillary Clinton and GQ have a lot of explaining to do if the Politico has this story correct According to Ben Smith, Hillary's campaign pressured GQ to kill a piece critical of her by threatening to withhold Bill Clinton's cooperation in the future. The editors of GQ caved into the threat and spiked the article:

Early this summer, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign for president learned that the men’s magazine GQ was working on a story the campaign was sure to hate: an account of infighting in Hillaryland.

So Clinton’s aides pulled a page from the book of Hollywood publicists and offered GQ a stark choice: Kill the piece, or lose access to planned celebrity coverboy Bill Clinton.

Despite internal protests, GQ editor Jim Nelson met the Clinton campaign’s demands, which had been delivered by Bill Clinton’s spokesman, Jay Carson, several sources familiar with the conversations said.

Instead of running the article on Hillary Clinton, the magazine decided to opt for a December puff piece on her husband. George Saunders traveled with Clinton to Africa to write the article after GQ's surrender, and his article will run in the issue where GQ selects its Man of the Year. As Smith reports, Bill Clinton's face on a cover can help sell product -- and GQ had to sell out to get it.

That puts an interesting spin on media relations, especially by a federal elected official. While it's certainly not illegal to demand that a story not be run, and even to threaten to cut off access if it does, it makes the quid pro quo of the Clinton story arguably an in-kind donation. After all, the Clinton campaign knew it was valuable enough to buy off GQ, and the deep-six of Josh Green's article on Hillary had at least an equal value to her campaign. It also calls into question just how far the Clintons will go, once back in the White House, to pressure media outlets into shutting down critical reporting on their activities.

The Politico notes that Hollywood celebrities often pull power plays on the media in the same manner, but there's a large difference. Hollywood celebrities don't make national policy or wield governmental power. The media's job is in part to inform the American public of their performance and to keep them from becoming corrupt and unaccountable. If Hillary the candidate manages to push the media around this easily to silence criticism, imagine what Hillary the President would do to those who report negative aspects of her performance.

Does Hillary believe in a free press? It doesn't appear so, but she believes in one she can buy off cheaply.

UPDATE and BUMP: Actually, I'm in agreement with Carol Herman in that GQ deserves more ire than the Clintons in this case. Mickey Kaus puts it succinctly, as usual (via Hot Air):

Obvious Questions: Could the piece have been as bad for the Clinton camp as the publicity they're now getting? Are they still not quite operating in the internet age? ... Doesn't Bill Clinton want to be on the cover of GQ a month before the Iowa caucuses? You'd think [GQ editor Jim]Nelson would have some leverage of his own.

The Clintons can't roll over the press unless the press lets them. GQ obviously wilts under a mild amount of heat. Who else wants to publish Josh Green's piece? I'll be happy to do it, if Green doesn't take Mickey up on his offer.

The ever-expanding number of blogs has helped to neutralize much of the major media’s attempts to influence culture unilaterally and from the top down. As a result, says James Lileks, “we don’t have an overculture anymore.” He adds that “people are no longer having to stifle their own interests in order to absorb mass culture. In the old days, they used to create their own communities by very low-tech means: fanzines, Star Trek convention clubs, things like that. But now, you can find like-minded individuals all over the place, and half of them seem to be creating content in the exact genre that you like.”

And what of Big Media itself? Glenn Reynolds says, “About five years ago, I did a piece for Tech Central Station [www.tcsdaily.com] in which I wrote that while blogs are starting to report more hard news, big media is getting ‘bloggier.’ That seems to hold up pretty well, and I think we’ll see more of that.”

LGF went from a sleepy blog about music and programming to a power house, after 9-11.

It covered a lot of the “dark underbelly”- the “stuff” the Jackal pack media ignores, or tell you you are a fool for wanting to learn about it at all. Rathergate and the Fauxtography scandals were LGF’s high points, and done well.

Recent changes lead me to believe that blog ads are now driving LGF’s reason for being, and it’s a pity.

I haven't written yet about the congressional battle over extending the State Children's Health Insurance program (SCHIP), and I don't think my partners have either. The issue is an important one in itself and also, quite likely, a precursor of a larger battle that soon will be fought over "HillaryCare" or some variation thereof.

Currently, SCHIP is a targeted program that provides health insurance for children of low income families. Congressional Democrats, though, are trying to expand the program by providing it to children in families with much higher incomes -- incomes well in excess of the approximately $42,000 per year (or twice the poverty level) that President Bush and congressional Repubicans propose.

However, as Paul Winfree and Greg D'Angelo of the Heritage Foundation point out:

Expanding SCHIP to cover children in higher income families is not an efficient or cost-effective way to reduce the ranks of uninsured children. As the safety net is cast further up the income ladder, it will increasingly substitute government programs and taxpayer dollars for private coverage and funding.

This phenomenon is known as the "crowd-out effect." Winfree and D'Angelo are able to estimate the extent and consequences of this effect, using as their starting point an econometric methodology developed by MIT professor Jonathan Gruber, coupled with findings by the Congressional Budget Office regarding the crowd-out that resulted from previous SCHIP expansions.

They find that under the Senate's SCHIP expansion, an estimated 1 million to 1.2 million children would gain SCHIP coverage, but between 467,000 and 611,000 children would lose private coverage. Due to poor targeting and the relative cost of crowd-out, the annual cost to taxpayers of covering an uninsured child under the Senate’s expansion plan would basically double, increasing from $1,418 to between $2,508 and $2,859. Moreover, these new cost figures are almost 2.5 times the average cost of private insurance. The House bill expands SCHIP even more -- an estimated 2.2 million to 2.4 million children would gain coverage. As a result, the annual cost to taxpayers of covering an uninsured child would increase by an even larger factor.

Beyond the inefficiency and lack of cost-effectiveness of the SCHIP expansion lies the question of whether the federal government can afford it. The Dems deal with this matter by funding the expansion through a sharp increase in the federal tobacco tax (61 cents per pack in the Senate bill). As Rep. Jim McCrery notes, the government is thus tapping into a declining revenue stream. Tobacco taxes also fall hardest on the working poor -- the very people that SCHIP was intended (at least until this latest round of proposed expansions) to help.

Even with this tax hike, the CBO finds the Senate's expansion (less aggressive than that of the House) revenue neutral only for the first five years. As Rep. McCrery explains, after five years, the Dems can maintain the appearance of fiscal sustainability only by mandating a drop in cost from $8.4 billion in 2012 to a mere $600 million in 2013. This means, of course, that a future Congress will be forced either to radically increase funding or let millions of American children lose their health coverage. And due to the crowd-out effect, it will probably be impossible for many families who lose their SCHIP money to find affordable private coverage.

Why are the Democrats pushing so hard for a middle class entitlement program that will promote inefficiency and waste, wreck the private market, and become fiscally unsustainable by 2013 if not before? It looks like an effort to lure middle-class families into government-run health care.

Sort of like HillaryCare.

Does anyone else find it outrageous that the UK and Netherlands are planning on subordinating their national laws to the EU in the face of wide public opposition without allowing the public to vote on the matter?

I can't understand why the residents of the UK are tolerating this. I'd love to hear from people with more political and cultural knowledge than I have on it.

We are putting up with it because we have no choice. The three main parties all agree that we are going to stay as a part of the EU, and the one that happens to be in power actually wants the EU to expand its power in the UK, because it stands for the sort of bureaucratic statism that socialists just love.

In addition to this, as it probably is in America, it is more a question of voting in the least offensive bunch of corrupt morons than actually voting for a party that you like the policies of, because most people in UK support better policing, harsher punishments, less immigration and less bureaucrats and none of the main parties advocate any of those.

Labour in particular has been frantically recruiting government employees, because that way they create a constituency that would be diagnosable as insane if they voted anything but Labour, as they depend on Government for their income and have no marketable skills.

Guy Fawkes had a point.

(CNSNews.com) - Organizers of San Francisco’s Folsom Street Fair — sponsored by Miller Brewing Co. — have portrayed Christ and his disciples as half-naked homosexual sadomasochists in the event’s promotional advertisement, and the conservative group Concerned Women for America is complaining about the hypocrisy of it.

“The bread and wine representing Christ’s broken body and lifegiving blood are replaced with sadomasochistic sex toys in this twisted version of Da Vinci’s The Last Supper,” CWA said on its Web site.

“‘Gay’ activists disingenuously call Christians ‘haters’ and ‘homophobes’ for honoring the Bible, but then lash out in this hateful manner toward the very people they accuse,” said said Matt Barber, CWA’s policy director for cultural issues…

CWA is calling on California politicians — House Nancy Pelosi, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sens. Feinstein and Boxer among them — to “publicly condemn this unprovoked attack against Christ and His followers.

“We further challenge the media to cover this affront to Christianity with the same vigor as recent stories about cartoon depictions of Mohammed and other items offensive to the Muslim community,” CWA said.

The Folsom Street Fair describes itself as “the world’s largest leather event.”

“We hope to see the fairgrounds filled with people in their most outrageous leather/rubber/fetish attire enjoying the worlds largest and best loved Leather fair,” the Web site says…

Bringing The Power Of The Internet To Earmark Research

The Sunlight Foundation has launched its new site designed to root out pork-barrel spending and hold lawmakers accountable for their earmarking. Earmark Watch does much more than just list earmarks -- it gives users the power to do their own research and report earmarks. The system also allows users to comment on earmarks in order to get more information into the hands of its visitors.

It provides a handy tool for searching through the database. For instance, I did a search on all earmarks in the House Defense appropriation currently wending its way to the floor to find all Minnesota earmarks. The system reports 11 earmarks, totalling over $26 million, that will be spent in our state. Almost a quarter of that comes from two earmarks to Phygen, which requires $3 million each on plasma sterilizers and ultra-endurance coating. Looking at Open Secrets, Phygen doesn't contribute to any of the earmarkers, or at least has not until now.

The list of earmarks for Minnesota on the House HHS appropriation contained at least one intriguing entry. Keith Ellison, the only Muslim in Congress, earmarked (along with Republican Jim Ramstad) $200,000 for the Jewish Family and Childrens Service in Minnetonka, to help fund a "naturally occurring retirement community demonstration project". I see no reference to the project on the organization's website, but I have sent an e-mail query to find out exactly what they plan to do with the money.

Did NPR Spike Juan Williams' Interview With The President?

"Serious questions. Serious answers. No evading the questions, no bloviating, no pomposity."

The National Black Republican Association has sent an e-mail out claiming that NPR has spiked an interview with George Bush. According to Chairman Francis Rice, the publicly-funded broadcaster has decided that it will not publish Juan Williams' lengthy dialogue with the President. Instead, the NBRA has received the transcript of the interview from the White House and has sent it out in its totality via e-mail.

I believe I've seen a glimpse of these responses elsewhere, but the interview does not appear on NPR's website. I've tried Googling portions of this transcript, and it doesn't seem to have been published anywhere.

It's not clear why NPR would have an issue with the interview. It's possible that they just didn't consider it newsworthy, but that would seem very odd, especially given their high-profile connection to Williams and the remarks Bush makes to Williams on controversial topics such as the Jena 6. Williams pressed Bush on a number of issues regarding race and politics, and Bush gave a series of thoughtful responses.

For instance, consider this exchange on Jena:

You know, I was saddened by the events. I would hope the hearts of children would grow beyond this notion about insulting somebody through hanging a noose -- which is an inherently bigoted response. And I'm not surprised of people's reaction, of the African American community reacting the way they did because this notion of unequal justice harkens back to a previous time in our history that a lot of folks, including me, are working to get beyond.

Williams also asked Bush about the response to Hurricane Katrina:

First of all, you know, our first response at all levels of government was to save people. And we had helicopters flying night and day, pulling people off the roof. And I made a comment down in New Orleans, I said those young kids reaching out of the helicopter didn't ask, are you black or white? They said, you're a fellow American, we're here to save you. Nearly 30,000 people were saved off the roofs. The response at all levels of government was not adequate. And the fundamental question now is, how do we make sure that the federal response is used properly by state and local authorities? We've spent about $114 billion, or we've sent $114 billion in the pipeline. And there's still a lot of unspent money. And there's a lot of housing money that's unspent. And the fundamental question, Juan, is, who's responsible? I felt like the responsibility lay with us to write the check to help recovery. I believe it's up to the local folks to make sure that the plans and the zoning laws are in place so that people actually can get that money and rebuild their lives.

Q Mr. President, thank you for joining us this morning. It's 50 years ago that events at Little Rock Central High School took place, as nine black children tried to enter that high school and federal troops had to be sent to protect them. Where do you think we are today in America in the fight for racial justice for all?

THE PRESIDENT: You know, we've obviously progressed because it is accepted that black children and white children are going to go to school together. I've thought about that. I went to the high school when I was -- since I've been President, and it struck me that an American President had to commit the 101st Airborne to get these kids into school. And it was a very ugly chapter in America. And we've progressed beyond that.

I think part of it has to do with social awareness, part of it has to do with the baby boomers coming of age. You know, a lot of people that are my age -- which happens to be 61 -- grew up rejecting this notion of a segregated society. I grew up in a town, Juan, where there was a white high school and a black high school -- that's Midland, Texas -- and of course, that no longer exists. So the structural change has happened.

I think hearts are changing as well in America, but there is still prejudice. And the role of the government is to open up opportunities for people and give people a chance to succeed. I mean, No Child Left Behind, for example, is a classic case of challenging this notion that certain kids can't learn, so let's measure to determine if they are learning and then correct problems early, before it's too late -- all aiming to give everybody access to the dream.

Q You know, today, the celebration 50 years later, also acknowledges the fact that a Republican predecessor of yours, President Eisenhower, decided to take that strong move of supporting racial integration. Why aren't you going to Little Rock today?

THE PRESIDENT: You know, I'm at the United Nations representing the country, talking about the great heart of America. And when it comes to dealing with issues like HIV/AIDS or malaria, it's my -- look, I hope people understand that I have competing obligations. Certainly my heart is in the right place.

Secondly, I did go to Topeka, Kansas, to celebrate the Brown decision.

Q Last week there was a large march in Jena, Louisiana -- you may have heard about it -- protesting the treatment of six black young people involved in a school fight. Fights broke out after; a noose was hung from a tree. Are events there a reflection of worsening race relations in the country, in your mind?

THE PRESIDENT: You know, I was saddened by the events. I would hope the hearts of children would grow beyond this notion about insulting somebody through hanging a noose -- which is an inherently bigoted response. And I'm not surprised of people's reaction, of the African American community reacting the way they did because this notion of unequal justice harkens back to a previous time in our history that a lot of folks, including me, are working to get beyond.

And so I wasn't surprised, Juan, of seeing the people on the streets. I was pleased that the march was peaceful. And beyond that, it's hard for me to comment because I don't want to get involved in an ongoing trial, but I do want to assure people that our Justice Department and appropriate branches in the Justice Department are monitoring the situation to make sure lives are safe, as well as to make sure that justice is fair.

Q Well, should the government get involved? Should you play a more active role there? Should the Congress, the Judiciary Committee in the House and the Senate get involved?

THE PRESIDENT: Well, I think this is a -- the charges were brought by a local prosecutor, and what the Justice Department ought to be doing is monitoring the civil rights violations, to the extent that there are some. Hopefully, this is going to be resolved in a fair -- in a way that says justice is equitable, that people will be treated fairly.

Q Bill Clinton used to say -- President Clinton -- that he had a Cabinet that looked like America. But, in fact, you've had a more diverse Cabinet, President Bush: Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, Elaine Chao, Alberto Gonzales, Alphonso Jackson, Mel Martinez, Carlos Gutierrez, Norman Mineta. Were they the best people for the job or did you select them to send a signal about the necessity of racial diversity?

THE PRESIDENT: I've always tried to be an inclusive person, without sacrificing excellence. And with these individuals you've named I've been able to achieve sending a message that we're a diverse nation and that -- and at the same time I found people to do the job. I couldn't imagine Condi Rice not being the Secretary of State. She is a -- she's been a key advisor inside the White House and she's doing a fabulous job as Secretary of State. So it's a combination of being interested in sending a message that America is a diverse country and people -- you know, if you look hard enough, you can find people that are capable of doing the job in a fine way. And so I've looked hard and asked them to serve and I'm proud of their service.

Q You've appointed two people to the Supreme Court, both white males. Do you think that there should be greater representation, not only blacks and Hispanic, but women on that high court?

THE PRESIDENT: I do, absolutely; and as you might remember, put forth a woman who I thought would be a great Supreme Court judge. And she never really got out of the blocks. And it looked like it was going to be a -- it would be impossible for her to get out of the committee. So she gracefully withdrew her name. But I do believe so and I hope I have another pick. And obviously would seek excellence and diversity.

Q Mr. President, in black America we have skyrocketing rates of black-on-black murder; disproportionate incarceration rates; 50 percent dropout rates in high schools across the country; 25 percent poverty rate. Sitting here in the White House, how do you explain these problem trends?

THE PRESIDENT: I think there's a lot of conditions that create that. One is schools that have been inadequate and have failed. If you don't get a good education, Juan, your self-esteem drops or you become someone who says this society isn't meant for me. So focusing early on education -- focusing on education and excellence in early education is vital.

Secondly, I believe the breakdown of the family has affected people. The way you solve a lot of the problems is -- at least my solution has been to really empower those who can be most effective at helping people realize there are right and wrong in life, and that is the inner-city churches. I believe the faith -- I'm a strong believer in the faith-based initiative because it is the local pastor or the local church member or the local community organizer who is much more effective about convincing somebody that they need help, or convincing somebody that there's a better way that -- rather than government trying to do that.

You know, I also believe that one of the problems in the African American community is there hasn't been asset accumulation -- in other words, assets have not been passed from one generation to the next. I remember going to a Mississippi automobile plant and a lot of the workers there were African Americans. And I asked them, did they have a 401(k)? And most of the folks raised their hand. I talked to some people afterwards, they said it was the first time they had ever had any assets, anybody in their family had accumulated assets that they could pass from one generation to the next. And I believe that government policy that encourages ownership will help address some of the frustrations inside parts of our country, and therefore proposed personal savings accounts as a part of the Social Security to make sure that the poor person was capable of -- had the ability to realize compounding rate of interest, which wealthier people do, but also had some assets.

So there is a variety of reasons why the statistics you cited are real. And the key is not to lose focus about it, not to forget. And so whether it be educational excellence or ownership or -- ownership of homes or ownership of assets, the administration has pushed hard to empower the individual.

Q Mr. President, the Supreme Court ruled this year that school districts in Louisville and Seattle can't engage in even voluntary plans to achieve school integration. Are you concerned that America's schools are growing more segregated, even as our population is more diverse and we are part of a global economy?

THE PRESIDENT: We don't want to be segregated as a society. We want there to be kids growing up understanding each other as a result of mingling in the school halls, for example. That's why I'm a school choice advocate. And I am public school choice advocate where schools are falling, and I believe in giving students the scholarships to be able to go to whatever school their parents think they ought to go to, very similar to the scholarship program here in Washington, D.C.

Q Mr. President, the Republican candidates for President have decided not to participate in a Hispanic issues debate; several Republicans have also pulled out of a debate later this week scheduled to discuss issues of concern to the black community. Jack Kemp has said that if the party -- what's going on with this party? Do they plan to have their meetings only in suburban country clubs? Newt Gingrich says the party is writing off whole swaths of America. Is this a turn away from minority outreach on the part of Republicans?

THE PRESIDENT: No, I think you'll see the nominee of the party -- whoever he is will head into the African American community with a positive message and, frankly, a good record as a result of compassionate conservatism. I mean, remember, we're the ones who confronted this education system that just shoves kids through the system without questioning. We're the ones who insisted upon disaggregation of results so that we could determine whether or not the African American kid was learning at the same rate as the white kid. And as a result of this intense focus on results, there's an achievement gap that's beginning to narrow.

So we've got a good record. More black people own homes today than ever before. I think that's an accurate statistic. And so -- and black entrepreneurship is on the rise. And so we've got a good record. And people shouldn't shy away from going into the African American community or the Latino community.

Q Well, I think people in the black and Latino community might say, what happened in Katrina, where poor people -- especially poor black people -- abandoned in that situation?

THE PRESIDENT: Yes. First of all, you know, our first response at all levels of government was to save people. And we had helicopters flying night and day, pulling people off the roof. And I made a comment down in New Orleans, I said those young kids reaching out of the helicopter didn't ask, are you black or white? They said, you're a fellow American, we're here to save you. Nearly 30,000 people were saved off the roofs.

The response at all levels of government was not adequate. And the fundamental question now is, how do we make sure that the federal response is used properly by state and local authorities? We've spent about $114 billion, or we've sent $114 billion in the pipeline. And there's still a lot of unspent money. And there's a lot of housing money that's unspent.

And the fundamental question, Juan, is, who's responsible? I felt like the responsibility lay with us to write the check to help recovery. I believe it's up to the local folks to make sure that the plans and the zoning laws are in place so that people actually can get that money and rebuild their lives.

Q Mr. President, illegal immigrants report that they're facing increased pressure from Homeland Security as well as local authorities after the failure of a national immigration reform bill. Is immigration now a civil rights issue, and are you doing anything to try to get that reform back on track?

THE PRESIDENT: As you know, I'm a strong advocate for comprehensive reform. I never felt we could adequately enforce the border unless we had a temporary guest worker program that would take pressure off the border. And, you know, I never -- and I knew we needed to address the issue that there's 11 million people here, more or less, that are undocumented, and we needed to do it in a way that was not amnesty, but also realistic enough not to kick them out of the -- feel like we could kick them out of the country; it's just not going to happen.

I was disappointed when the bill went down. You know, I'm not sure there's an appetite in Congress to take up the issue again. But I'll tell you where the pressure is going to come. It's going to come from employers who can't find people to do the work that they need done -- whether you're picking peaches somewhere or apples somewhere. These growers or hotel workers simply are going to run out of people to do those jobs, particularly as this economy continues to expand. And that pressure is going to be -- starting to move into Congress at some point in time, and the Congress is going to have to address this issue again.

Q Mr. President, Donovan McNabb, the Eagles' quarterback, recently said that black quarterbacks are under more scrutiny that white quarterbacks. Do you think that's true in all American life? As you observe our country, do you see that blacks are under more intense scrutiny, subject to greater criticisms?

THE PRESIDENT: It's an interesting question. I heard him say that, and you know, it's a -- if he was under scrutiny yesterday, he was scrutinized positive because he had a great game; I mean, this guy can play. You know, it's hard for me to tell, Juan. I'm sure there are cases where somebody feels like the criticism, the harsh criticism comes because expectations aren't being met or because -- let me just say that -- like, for example, Condi Rice. I don't -- you know, she gets criticized. I don't think she would tell you that she's been criticized more than any other Secretary of State because of her race. Maybe she would. I don't think so. I've never heard her complain about it. But I'm sure there are cases where people -- I remember the day where people said there's never going to be a team with a black quarterback, and all of a sudden, people like McNabb are showing what a ridiculous statement that was.

And so I would hope that's not the case. And I'm sure that a person like Donovan McNabb, who's an honest guy, is just sharing what he thinks, which is okay.

Q Mr. President, just to shift for a second as we conclude, the Iranian president, Ahmadinejad, is coming to the U.N., but he's also going to be at Columbia University.

THE PRESIDENT: Yes.

Q Do you think that Columbia is right to welcome him and give him the opportunity to speak to its students?

THE PRESIDENT: You know, I hope -- I mean, this is a place of high learning, and if the president thinks it's a good idea to have the leader from Iran come and talk to the students as an educational experience, I guess it's okay with me.

I'm a little -- you know, the problem is Ahmadinejad uses these platforms to advance his agenda, which is, I suspect in this case, is he doesn't want America to really know his true intention. I'll be curious to hear how he describes his views of the Holocaust. I'll be curious to hear how he answers the question -- you know, that our [sic] intention is to destroy Israel.

Ours is a great country. I mean, if you really think about it, he's the head of a state sponsor of terror. And yet, an institution in our country gives him a chance to express his point of view, which really speaks to the freedoms of the country. I'm not so sure I'd offer the same invitation, but nevertheless it speaks volumes about really the greatness of America. We're confident enough to let a person come and express his views. I just hope he tells everybody the truth.

Q Mr. President, there's a new book, "Evangelical President," quotes you as saying, "Hillary Clinton will defeat Barack Obama."

THE PRESIDENT: Yes.

Q Is that what you think?

THE PRESIDENT: You know, I probably shouldn't have opined publicly about it since I'm not that great a political prognosticator to begin with. I believe she's going to be a formidable person in the primaries because she's got a national reach. And I'm not sure I can call the elections since I've never participated in a Democratic primary in my life. I do think we can defeat either candidate in the general election in November of 2008.

Q A final thing, Mr. President. You've said that you don't want to comment about any American knowledge of Israel's attack on Syria. This week, do you have anything more that you can offer us, the American people, on this subject?

THE PRESIDENT: I really don't, Juan. Thank you.

Q Well, Mr. President, thank you for giving us this time.

THE PRESIDENT: Yes, sir.

But then, after years and years of being exploited by your royal masters and having them blame US (U.S), and the centuries of having petty little tin-pot Imams dicate who lives and who dies for things like flying kites or showing a bit of ankle, you decided to blame us for your woes, and you killed 3,000 innocent Americans for the crime of going to work in the morning to feed their families. Suddenly, thanks entirely to twenty bloody Muslim hitmen, all of America woke up for a bit and got a good look at a religion that preaches that this life sucks canal water through a dirty hose, so your only hope to have ANY kind of fun at all is to blow up your own children in the hopes that it might take out a few Americans.

Now, if my pastor started spouting anything this insane, we'd boot him out of the church and find another one, and if my holy book preached it, I'd dump it in a urinal and move on. But not you! You guys just love to be enslaved. All the while you nanner on about the Infidels persecuting you, your own leaders are lopping your hands off. We in America have done all the homework we need to do to understand Islam, and I think I can sum it up thusly:

You are a bunch of raving nutbags. Really. Charles Manson himself would think you had gone round the bend. You passed the Full Tilt Goofytown station a while back, and you are hurtling towards the end of the line, and a quick dip into oblivion.

I live in America. We walked on the moon (symbol of your religion, in case the irony eludes you) and we have saved the world from insane dictators and corrupt philosophy three times now, four counting the near future when we are going to have to thin your herd of wailing morons and make your cities green glass. Before 911, we were content to be ignorant. (Many of my people, sadly, still are.) But we are watching you, and biding our time. How many people, for instance, know that James Hansen, a man billed as a lonely "NASA whistleblower" standing up to the mighty U.S. government, was really funded by Soros' Open Society Institute , which gave him "legal and media advice"?

That's right, Hansen was packaged for the media by Soros' flagship "philanthropy," by as much as $720,000, most likely under the OSI's "politicization of science" program.

That may have meant that Hansen had media flacks help him get on the evening news to push his agenda and lawyers pressuring officials to let him spout his supposedly "censored" spiel for weeks in the name of advancing the global warming agenda.

Hansen even succeeded, with public pressure from his nightly news performances, in forcing NASA to change its media policies to his advantage. Had Hansen's OSI-funding been known, the public might have viewed the whole production differently. The outcome could have been different.

UN Demands $42,000,000,000 A Year For AIDS

U.N. Urges Quadrupling of Global AIDS Spending to Meet 2010 Treatment Goal

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 25 — The United Nations’ AIDS agency on Tuesday called for the world to quadruple its spending on the disease in order to reach the U.N. goal of providing universal access to effective treatment by 2010.

Agency officials said current spending on AIDS, totaling about $10 billion a year mainly from international donors and the governments of affected nations, would leave two out of three adults who need antiretroviral drugs without them. Efforts to prevent new infections also would fall far below target levels.

“We simply are not spending enough or doing enough,” Michel Sidibe, deputy executive director for UNAIDS, said in a conference call with reporters.

The United Nations in 2006 set a goal of providing universal access to treatment, care, support and prevention efforts by 2010. Many nations have endorsed that goal, but even the rapidly growing rate of global AIDS spending is insufficient to meet it, according to a 36-page report due to be issued Wednesday.

The report says that spending $42 billion a year by 2010 would allow massive new resources to be deployed, including 427,500 medical personnel and 1.5 million teachers. Bolstered programs would be able to distribute 10 billion condoms and provide 2.5 million circumcisions…

The increased spending, officials said, also would halve the number of new infections, though the report does not make clear how this goal would be reached.

Prevention programs have stalled in much of sub-Saharan Africa, the region with the bulk of the world’s estimated 40 million HIV infections. The U.N. report recommends using about $150 million a year to improve the availability of circumcision, which recent research has shown reduces the rate of HIV infections by about 60 percent. But the overwhelming majority of the scaled-up prevention spending envisioned by the report would be devoted to strategies that have shown, at best, only modest success in controlling the epidemic in the hardest-hit areas.

Global spending on AIDS has grown by a factor of 30 over the past decade, driven mainly by international donors such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and President Bush’s $15 billion anti-AIDS program, which he has proposed doubling…

Maybe they can put up some of the billions they skimmed starving the Iraqis in their “Oil For Food” scam.

Just kidding of course. The United Nations only ever uses other people’s money. (Most American taxpayers.)

I knew there were problems there but I rarely go there anymore and had no idea about this BS. I do know you to be a gentleman who simply does not do things that would call for banning, so it seemed something very unsavory was going on. I am disappointed. I guess he’s not the first person to let his ego swallow his honor.

Mac, I think Charles at LGF is a classic example of “a conservative is a Liberal who has been mugged…”

LGF started as a blog about music and programming- but 9-11 got his attention ( much like the old story about the mule you had to hit over the head with a 2 X 4 ) focused on the danger militant Islam posed to the West– and he took the bit in his teeth and ran with it for a while.

Somewhere, along the line, blog ads and traffic counts became more important than content, or the members there. I belonged for years, but rarely made comments- there was something off-putting about it– a little cliquish, a little cultist, a little “I don’t really belong here among these folks”– but it was a good source of stories The Jackal Pack Press doesn’t want you to know about, or think about. God forbid you notice a pack of seventh-century savages trying to impose Sharia Law on your women, you racist, you…

The changes there in the last year ( purging older, more seasoned members, “streamlining” the blog. i.e., increasing traffic counts ) led me to suspect Charles was seeing dollars signs in his eyes more than truth.

And it’s a pity… I had once considered making LGF my home away from home- now, for whatever or what little my influence at Free Republic and Free Dominion and the many other forums & blogs I frequent goes…

I’ll never mention it, refer to it, or care about it, again.

One element (but not the only one) of last night's Democratic talkathon that deserves attention is the candidates' unwillingness to challenge the phenomenon of "sanctuary cities" such as Minneapolis and New Haven where local authorities refuse to enforce immigration law. This is one point that supports Bill Kristol's assessment of last night's debate as marking the possible vulnerability of the Democratic nominee in the fall. Today's Yale Daily News reports on New Haven's road show taking the city's municipal identification program for illegal aliens into the 'hood. The consensus of the Democratic candidates' in support of this phenomenon is striking.

Another element of the talkathon that marks the candidates' vulnerability in the general election is the candidates' conformity on the desirability of public schools educating eight-year-olds on homosexual relationships. At one point last night -- was it during the discussion of Social Security? -- one of the candidates referred to the unreality of the talkathon, but bankruptcy seemed to me the more appropriate metaphor. Senator Gravel found a way to salute himelf for his personal and business bankruptcies:

“Well, first off, if you want to make a judgment of who can be the greediest people in the world when they get to public office, you can just look at the people up here,” Gravel said in a nod to his fellow candidates.

“Now, you say the condo business,” he continued. “I will tell you, Donald Trump has been bankrupt 100 times. So I went bankrupt once in business. And the other – who did I bankrupt? I stuck the credit card companies with $90,000 worth of bills, and they deserved it – “

“They deserved it,” Gravel repeated, “and I used the money to finance the empowerment of the American people with a national initiative.”

Byron York salutes Gravel:

Gravel’s answer was unprecedented in the history of these debates, and, if nothing else, it seemed guaranteed to win him at least a share of the insolvent vote, even among those who have stuck credit card companies for debts far more prosaic than empowering the American people with national initiatives.

But York misses Gravel's magnanimity. He went bankrupt for us! It seemed to me an emblematic moment.

SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that Chinese officials and members of the United States Congress have held a secret meeting without White House participation about the future of Washington’s climate protection policies. Beijing officials are trying to determine what they should expect in the post-Bush era.

A shift in American climate protection policies in the post-Bush era could force China to implement emissions limits.

The deputy chief of the Chinese National Development Reform Commission (NDRC), Xie Zhenhue, met on Wednesday morning with a bipartisan group of Republican and Democratic members of Congress to discuss future climate protection policy developments in the United States, SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned.

Officials held the meeting on the eve of a two-day conference on climate change organized by US President George W. Bush that will bring together the world’s biggest carbon dioxide emitters. Critics expect little to happen at the meeting because of Bush’s waning influence and the fact that the US has pushed for “aspirational” targets rather than mandatory emissions limits.

High-ranking sources close to the participants of the meeting between the Chinese delgation and Congress said the Chinese sought to find out how determined Congress is to push through rigorous climate protection laws in the future. During the discussion, members of Congress made clear that they would soon like to vote on legislation that would set binding emissions limits. However, the members of Congress said they didn’t provide the Chinese with a firm timeline for when this might happen…

Participants in the meeting said later that the Chinese grew evasive when the issue of China’s own contribution to climate protection was raised. The Chinese reportedly said, however, that they were concerned it might no longer be possible for them to delay action in the “post-Bush era.” They had set up the meeting to find out if the US position on climate protection would actually change under a new president.

The members of Congress reportedly informed the Chinese emissaries that legislators soon planned to respond to the American public’s broad support by pushing through climate protection laws.

It still remains unclear whether the White House was informed of the meeting. Nevertheless, it demonstrates the waning importance of the Bush administration in determining future climate protection policy in the country…

Unbelievable!

Investors Business Daily looks at the S-CHIP expansion and recognizes the political dangers for Republicans opposing it. Any vote against expanding health insurance coverage to children will prompt critics to paint the GOP as the party of Fagins, taking medical attention away from poor sick kids. However, in this case, the kids aren't poor, although that's where the funding will originate: The tobacco tax represents a couple of problems to this program. First, as almost everyone recognizes, tobacco taxes are regressive.And the people who quit will most likely come from middle- and upper-income brackets, according to the Cato Institute. This tax will therefore become even more regressive.

Why is Mr. George Soros’s famously well-heeled Open Society Institute getting donations from from agencies of the US federal government, as well as the United Palestinian Appeal — which is a relief charity?

These are the only years that are readily accessible. But one suspects these contributions have been going on for quite a while.

So how many taxpayers do you think are aware that they are helping to directly support Mr. Soros’s noble efforts? And to the tune of $16,390,296 in just three years?

And what about the people who give money to the Palestinian Appeal? Isn’t it a reasonable expectation that the money would be going to the relief of the poor Palestinians, rather than to a super deluxe political organization?

Also bear in mind that the Open Society Institute is just the flagship for Mr. Soros’s numerous philanthropic enterprises. Who knows how much money he is getting from the US government?

Still, I am sure there is an innocent, even noble, explanation for all of this.

Sure there is.

I missed this last week. Mr. Burnett had an op-ed column in the Somerset Daily American on 9/11. He also did a second radio interview with Pittsburgh talker Fred Honsberger. These heartfelt appeals are well worth the time. If you want to feel the loving and heroic spirit of Tom Burnett Jr., just listen to his father.

It is heartening also to hear the caller with the Indian accent expressing his fury that America is allowing this desecration to go forward, but he makes a mis-statement about the 44 glass blocks that will be emplaced along the flight path. In addition to the 40 inscribed with the names of the murdered passengers and crew, there ARE to be four more, matching the number of terrorists, but they are NOT going to be inscribed with the names of the terrorists, as the caller seemed to think.

After deliberating on this for a while, I’ve decided to start a blogburst regarding the Flight 93 Memorial in order to keep the calculations that verified its orientation to Mecca from going down the memory hole.

In addition, I think bringing heightened awareness to the mosque features of the memorial and other facts are important because they’re moving to start construction of this monstrosity at the crash site.

But this is an amazing victory. In Vancouver, infidels can't smoke but Muslims can.

It's true; Muslim hookah-smokers have been exempted from a new anti-smoking ordinance in Vancouver. It seems that Muslims really, really need to smoke. A new motto for the Vancouver city council: Not just mad; stark, raving mad!

Live Blog: Solutions Day Launch

Newt Gingrich will begin speaking at 7 pm CT to officially launch Solutions Day. Rob Bluey and I will live-blog the speech from the media center. The actual ballroom where this speech will take place has filled to capacity. The original room had a capacity for 800 people, and they had to overflow into an adjoining wing. Estimates of the attendance now exceed 1,000.

6:59 ET - Bipartisanship has officially been seen! Dennis Kucinich's campaign has a booth here, as do Thompson, Rudy, McCain, Huckabee, Romney, and Paul.

7:00 - We can certainly hear the bass in their overture ....

7:04 - The first speaker is Michael Crowley, the Texas Railroad commissioner. He's introducing the concept of Solutions Day. We're getting the audio but not the video in the Media Center, which means we could use a solution here, too.

7:06 - The invocation was delivered by Deacon Joseph Ruberte. That was followed the Mayor of Atlanta, a Democrat who "believes Gingrich is right ... The best ideas will come from across the country, from many different voices, from people who want to be real solutions providers."

7:11 - Saxby Chambliss also joins from video, again underscoring the nonpartisan nature of Solutions Day. "We have gotten way too partisan with our politics." At least this event puts its money where its mouth is. We have enough representatives from both parties to make the claim. Saxby says he's applying this idea to agricultural policy, but that's rather scary -- because ag subsidies has been one of the few areas where bipartisanship makes the problem worse, not better.

7:15 - Hey, Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue made it! That's the real Governor of Georgia, this time ...

7:16 - Perdue says that two-year-olds want to solve everything themselves. Mature individuals come together as communities to produce solutions. Interesting analogy ....

7:21 - Newt's on stage now. "As a general rule, levees should not break, bridges should not fall," gets a lot of applause, but "English should be the official language of America" gets an ovation.

7:23 - Newt's talking about the amazing decline of Detroit -- and says it's because of bureaucracies that don't deliver and governments are incompetent. He uses the FedEx analogy to show how private enterprise delivers (literally) by tracking 23 million packages each day. A FedEx truck has more computing power than an Apollo vehicle. Now, the federal government can't even track people crossing our borders. That's obviously touched a nerve here, too.

7:28 - Newt has the audience hooked. He's sounding out some traditional conservative themes on border security, trial lawyers, and economic power.

7:30 - American Solutions has 135 websites, attempting to harness grassroots power and knowledge. He compares this to Rudy Giuliani's efforts to use evidence-based systems to make objective judgments on public policy. We need more objective measurements, more evidence-based policy judgments, and less partisanship.

7:32 - "Red vs Blue issues" should be transformed to "Red White & Blue" issues. Gingrich says that AmSol has six polls, and they're about to announce some of the data. Stay tuned ....

7:34 - Kellyanne Conway introduces the data presentation by quoting Ronald Reagan that "change always happens at the dinner table." They want to harness the distributed network of American citizens to find solutions from the ground up. Their polling avoided "horse-race" polling.

7:36 - A majority (65%) says the federal government needs major transformational change. They are tired of gridlock, and a large majority prefer the mechanisms of private enterprise.

7:37 - 92% support long-term solutions to big problems like Social Security, border control and immigration, and the like.

7:40 - A large majority support legal immigration. 72% believe that the nation does not enforce its immigration laws, and 88% support deporting felonious illegals. 83%, though, support offering intensive English-language instruction to those who need it.

7:41 - More than 67% believe in defeating America's enemies, and similar percentages believe that the gridlock in Washington makes it harder to do that.

7:42 - A large majority believes in some Social Security privatization.

7:43 - 72% believe that entrepenuers will solve economic and environmental problems, not government. That's bad news for certain erstwhile presidential candidates-cum-filmmakers.

7:44 - The announcement that a majority oppose the banishment of God from public discourse gets a standing ovation. 90% say religious values are personally important and 79% say it's important for the nation.

7:47 - Newt: "you can act with confidence that 70-80% of the people of this nation agree with your values... Only when government becomes stunningly incompetent does this nation become narrowly divided." (rough quote)

7:49 - Newt didn't like Ahmadinejad's appearance at Columbia, either. We should be defending against the Iranian attacks against the US. When an enemy arises to liberty, we have a duty to defeat that enemy.

7:51 - Modern technology makes it possible for the American citizenry to demand change from its governing class.

7:53 - They're introducing the Solutions Lab, which is a cross between a Wiki, a social network, and a workshop area. It's quite advanced, using some of the ideas we first saw from Joe Trippi in the Dean campaign, but in a non-partisan sense.

7:55 - At the end of the presentation, I heard someone behind me murmur, "Sweet!" Rob and I went into the main hall, because the video never did get fixed in the Media Center.

7:57 - We want to "liberate the creativity of 300 million Americans." One key area is education. The failure of math/science education presents more of a threat to our long-term national security than any conceivable conventional war.

7:58 - He's now introducing former Colorado Governer Roy Romer, a Democrat who also ran the LA school district. Talk about a thankless job! This is part of the "ED in 08" project, which Newt has endorsed as a part of American Solutions.

8:00 "The world is very, very fastly passing us by." Eesh. Not a great way to introduce educational reform.

8:02 - Romer says we need hard data. We need to know if we're keeping up with the competition. We're also having 1.2 million kids drop out of high school a year -- an astoundingly high number. Even those who graduate have little preparation; a third or more need remedial education in core areas once they get to college.

8:03 - Our expectations are too low for our kids. I've heard this almost all my life. I had a good friend from Brazil, Paulo, who had started algebra in the fifth grade there.

8:05 - We need performance based pay for teachers. Romer, as a Democrat, says he knows that some of his suggestions will rub his party the wrong way, and some will rub us the wrong way. I'm assuming this suggestion is one of the former.

8:08 - Romer was very well received by the crowd here. He gave a bit of a fiery stump speech, and it was appreciated by the audience.

8:10 - Newt has a map up that shows how many field workshops have already been created -- and it's pretty remarkable.

8:11 - Someone tried to stop the entire show by requesting permission to ask a question. Newt suggested he stop by the book-signing table after the presentation.

8:14 - Gingrich tells the story of Valley Forge, a story he includes in many of his speeches. You could hear a pin drop as he related the desperate nature of the Revolution at that point, and how the password for the attack, Victory or Death, represented cruel reality to Washington's forces. With their backs against the wall, they prevailed -- and citizens rallied to their cause by the thousands. If we could do that then, why not now?

8:17 - "Politics is not about cynicism ... shallow, cheap tricks; politics is a process in which we come together and help govern this great nation. If we can't do that, then we can't lead the world." An excellent valediction for his launch. He also invited his grandchildren and their friends to the stage, and said, "This is what it's all about."

8:22 - Wow -- it finished early? When was the last time a politician left the stage early?

I think this was an effective launch. Newt and Romer spoked very effectively, even though both used different styles. I'm back in the Media Center, where the two journalists who covered this noted that Gingrich relied on Republican issues -- border security, immigration, entitlement reform, and so on. However, I think they missed the point. Their polling shows that while these issues may get identified with Republicans inside the beltway, a large majority of people believe that these are issues that need priority solutions. The key is to find solutions that can either bridge or bypass the partisan bickering.

I'm glad I came out here today. It's an ambitious, audacious project, and if Newt can make it work, he will have a huge constituency for significant policy change. That, in the end, may be far more satisfying for Gingrich than a presidential campaign.

Clarence Thomas: I Was Lynched For Abortion

Matt Drudge has a leak that had to come from CBS about their upcoming interview with Clarence Thomas. Airing on Sunday, the Steve Kroft segment coincides with the publication of Thomas' memoirs, and Thomas doesn't pull punches. In the book he talks about the "lynching" he received during his confirmation hearing, and he says it damaged everyone and set the stage for the impeachment of Bill Clinton (via Bluey's Blog):

In his first television interview, in which he discusses his childhood, his race, his rise to Supreme Court Justice and his job on the nation's highest court, Clarence Thomas says the real issue at his controversial confirmation hearings 16 years ago was abortion. Saying the issue was "the elephant in the room," Thomas also tells Steve Kroft that the hearings he called at the time a "high tech lynching" harmed the country. The interview will be broadcast on 60 MINUTES, Sunday Sept. 30 (7:30-9:00 PM/ET, 7:00-9:00 PM /PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Thomas, whose Supreme Court positions on abortion issues have been conservative, says the confirmation hearings in which he was accused of sexual harassment by a former employee -- allegations he continues to deny -- were really about abortion. "That was the elephant in the room... That was the issue. That is the issue that people are apparently so upset about," he tells Kroft. "[That is the issue] that you determine the composition of your Supreme Court and your entire federal judiciary, it seems now," says Thomas.

He says the hearings harmed the accuser, Anita Hill, himself, and ultimately the country by setting a precedent manifested in other highly charged, media-infused events such as the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton. "The process harmed her. It harmed me and we see sort of the precedent of this kind of thing begin to harm even people like President Clinton," Thomas believes. "Things are out of control. That's not good for the country. It's not good for the court," he continues, "What are we going to look like years from now if we can't get people confirmed because everybody gets to attack them. They get to draw and quarter them," he says.

One cannot deny the connection, and it exists on two levels. On the surface, the focus on sexual harrassment in the office pushed by Democrats led to legislation that criminalized caddish behavior. Corporate managers and employees suffered through millions of hours of lectures on power differentials between employment levels and how even flirting between executives and staff should be considered potentially abusive. The significance of this in connection to Monica Lewinsky should not be underestimated.

On a deeper level, it helped amplify a dynamic that had started during the Robert Bork confirmation hearing. Before that, judicial confirmations had largely been non-partisan and non-controversial. After Bork, and especially after Thomas, they became bloody brawls, and both parties made the federal judiciary a Christians vs the Lions forum. That's not just a consequence of the Thomas "lynching", but the result of decades of judicial activism, which has given the Supreme Court far too much of a legislative function.

I look forward to reading the Thomas book. He has remained very quiet in the sixteen years since he joined the Supreme Court, even while others wrote his story. His side of the argument should prove an intriguing read.

Backhoe, I lost respect for Charles when he never thanked me for the Jackson I put in his tip jar when he was “struggling to make ends meet”. He never got another dime outta me.

I had the same thing happen with me.There is much controversy over Free Republic’s fundraisers ( and little over Free Dominion’s ) but whatever else may be said, the owners have always thanked me, publically, for the pittances I contributed. It doesn’t take much to keep me happy.

When last I wrote about Miller Beer, the company was cluelessly sponsoring illegal alien protests and spinning furiously. Doesn’t look like they learned to stay away from radical politics. Miller went ahead and sponsored the “Folsom Street Fair” in San Francisco…billed as the “world’s largest leather event.”

Here’s the Catholic-denigrating promotional poster for the Miller-backed fair via CNSNews.com, depicting the Last Supper as a gathering of S&M enthusiasts:

Take a closer look. The bread and wine at the supper table are replaced with sex toys. Swell.

In response to complaints from Christian groups, Miller has asked for its logo to be removed. And the Folsom organizers are now disingenuously arguing that they neeeever meant to offend:

There was no intention to be particularly pro-religion or anti-religion with this poster; the image is intended only to be reminiscent of the ‘Last Supper’ painting. We hope that people will enjoy the artistry for what it is - nothing more or less. Many people choose to speculate on deeper meanings.

The NYSun reports that while Miller requested that the poster be changed, it’s still sponsoring the event:

As of yesterday, the Miller Light and Miller Genuine Draft logos, are still on the poster on the fair’s Web site. It also lists the beers as “presenting sponsors” of the event, along with two “hardcore” pornography sites, Nakedsword.com and TitanMen.com.

The question isn’t whether the Folsom organizers should be allowed to promote their bacchanalia however they want. Go right ahead with your bullwhips, dildos, and chains. Knock yourselves out. Really.

The question is one of corporate responsibility. The question is whether a mainstream retailer ought to be lending its name year after year to a fringe group bent on alienating a majority of Americans who happen to be people of faith.

Miller’s answer:

“We are and will continue to be supportive [of Folsom Street Fair and the LGBT community],” said Julian Green, director of media relations of Miller Brewing Company, Wednesday afternoon.

Miller has not requested a refund of any sponsorship money, Green said.

Miller: The beer of open borders and leather-bound Christian-bashers.

My guess is that Charles is backtracking traffic from LGFwatch (whom I expect are clucking over his meltdown) and found some reference to us. In his paranoid state - shazam - we’re the same. Seems to have been the same mistake some folks at LGFWatch are making. AND that Charles is eager to promote amongst his leftovers.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Friday that every child born in the United States should get a $5,000 "baby bond" from the government to help pay for future costs of college or buying a home.

Clinton, her party's front-runner in the 2008 race, made the suggestion during a forum hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus.

"I like the idea of giving every baby born in America a $5,000 account that will grow over time, so that when that young person turns 18 if they have finished high school they will be able to access it to go to college or maybe they will be able to make that downpayment on their first home," she said.

This is one of the more laughably ironic rants from Mr. Clinton, since his last feigned outrage at Chris Wallace on Fox News almost exactly a year ago.

And speaking of phony outrage, can you count the mendacities that stream from the great man’s mouth?

How was Max Cleland’s military service ”smeared”? What did the Swiftboat Veterans ever say about Mr. Kerry that was false?

Of course the New York Times refused to run any of the completely factual ads from the Swiftboat Vets. Whereas they gave the libelous and fact-free ad from MoveOn.org their special secret half-off rate for America-haters.

(And where was Mr. Clinton when Mr. Kerry was comparing our soldiers in Vietnam to the army of Jhengis Khan? Dodging the draft and denouncing our troops from England?)

Do we really want this reprobate back in the White House?

The Second Coming of George McGovern ( Yes, Hillarrheah! again... )

George McGovern, who was crushed by Richard Nixon in a landslide in 1972, has gone down in history as one of our most feckless Presidential candidates. McGovern ran on a far-left platform that included a proposal that at the time was deemed risible--the "demogrant." The demogrant program was simple: the federal government would write a check for $1,000 to every American. In 1972, that idea was so widely ridiculed as over-the-top pandering, as well as economically pointless--even Hubert Humphrey savaged it--that McGovern quietly abandoned the idea.

But the demogrant has returned! Today, Hillary Clinton unveiled her own demogrant proposal: every newborn American baby will get a birthday present from the federal government in the form of a $5,000 check. Buying votes, I guess, is something that never goes out of style.

It occurred to Scott that Hillary's proposal is basically a demogrant, adjusted for inflation. Out of curiosity, he went here and did the math. The result was striking. McGovern's $1,000 in 1972 was worth, in 2006 dollars, $4808.90. Add a few bucks for 2007, and Hillary's baby present is a dead ringer for the demogrant proposal that was laughed off the stage in 1972!

It will be interesting to see whether the votes of today's voters are any easier to buy than they were 35 years ago.

PAUL adds: If Hillary will make her plan retroactive to 1972, she can have my vote.

SCOTT adds: McGovern's demogrant proposal provided the McGovern campaign's version of a guaranteed annual income plan, while Ms. Hillary's demogrant idea is a one time per child dispensation in the guise of a "baby bond." She apparently first sketched it out in her 2006 speech to the Democratic Leadership Council unveiling the DLC's American Dream Initiative. In that speech she proposed "providing a baby bond to each of the 4 million children born in America every year, a $500 savings bond at birth and again at age 10." Today she ups the ante considerably a la George McGovern in connection with her own presidential campaign.

Clinton: Let's Add A $20 Billion Entitlement (Update & Bump - Context?)

Fresh off of pushing for an expansion of S-CHIP into the middle class and adding tens of billions of dollars on insurance subsidies, Hillary Clinton decided to create another entitlement program for her cradle-to-grave nanny state vision. In her address to the Congressional Black Caucus, Hillary said she'd like to spend $20 billion each year on checks to newborn infants:

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday that every child born in the United States should get a $5,000 "baby bond" from the government to help pay for future costs of college or buying a home.

Clinton, her party's front-runner in the 2008 race, made the suggestion during a forum hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus.

The New York senator did not offer any estimate of the total cost of such a program or how she would pay for it. Approximately 4 million babies are born each year in the United States.

The US has had over 4 million births per year since 2000. The calculation is easy. In 2004, with 4,121,000 births, that would mean $20,605,000,000 dollars ... for just one year.

Where does Hillary plan to get that money? It's easy to talk about writing checks, but the federal budget already runs in the red, especially on entitlements. If we talk about spending even more money that we don't have, why stop at $5,000? John McCain wondered aloud in his blogger conference call whether $100,000 wouldn't sound more compassionate, as long as we didn't talk about how we plan to pay for the program.

This represents pandering politics at its worst. Want to get votes for an election? Promise to buy people off with free money! It takes the worst instincts of Norman Hsu to suggest yet another entitlement Ponzi scheme to get elected to office. The company Hillary keeps has started to rub off on her. UPDATE & BUMP, 3:40 PM: Teresa in the comments claims that Clinton's remarks were taken out of context. "Clinton was responding to a program suggested by Time Magazine in which the gov't would set up this program, but kids could only withdraw the money IF they served in the military or some other national service organization first."

Unfortunately, to take advantage of the 18 years of compounded interest Hillary thinks will pay for a college education or a new home, the government has to buy the bonds at birth -- which means the money gets outlaid right from the start, and we're paying $20 billion a year for this entitlement. Either that, or the government has to calculate the compounded interest for 18 years at the point of that decision and write a check -- which makes this an unfunded mandate, a liability that won't even get accounting until the lump sums start getting paid. How Liberals Lie; One Example

There is an incredibly lame left-wing site called "Media Matters," which is funded, I believe, by George Soros. It serves a far-left agenda, and most recently has launched an attack on Rush Limbaugh for ostensibly describing all soldiers who don't agree with our Iraq policy as "phony soldiers." This "Media Matters" chestnut has been cited by Democrats in the House and Senate and was swallowed whole by in-the-tank-for-the-left MSNBC, but, not surprisingly given "Media Matters'" track record, it is entirely false. Here is Rush, rebutting the liberal smear:
