Posted on 01/28/2003 12:59:51 AM PST by Bella_Bru

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

obdurate\OB-du-rit; OB-dyu-rit\, adjective:

1. Hardened in feelings, especially against moral or mollifying influences; unyielding; hard-hearted; stubbornly wicked.
2. Hard; harsh; rugged; rough; intractable.

Etymology: Obdurate is from Latin obduratus, past participle of obduro, obdurare, to be hard against, from ob-, intensive prefix + durus, hard.

Synonyms: Hard; firm; unbending; inflexible; unyielding; stubborn; obstinate; impenitent; callous; unfeeling; insensible; unsusceptible.

Usage: Obdurate, Callous, Hardened. Callous denotes a deadening of the sensibilities; as, "a callous conscience." Hardened implies a general and settled disregard for the claims of interest, duty, and sympathy; as, "hardened in vice." Obdurate implies an active resistance of the heart and will against the pleadings of compassion and humanity.

How do bi-focal contacts work? I can't figure how you can have two types of lens draped across your (lovely in your case) eyes.

These problems will not be solved with a nationalized health care system that dictates coverage and rations care. (Applause.)

Slap! Take That Hillary!...

Instead, we must work toward a system in which all Americans have a good insurance policy, choose their own doctors, and seniors and low-income Americans receive the help they need. (Applause.) Instead of bureaucrats and trial lawyers and HMOs, we must put doctors and nurses and patients back in charge of American medicine. (Applause.)

Slap! Take That Edwards...

i have no clue how they work, in fact i am not sure if they even do. it is not bifurcated like glasses would be. i am giving these the old college try and if my long distance vision doesn't improve, i will bag it. i could not read a license plate more than one car length in front of me. he did test me for the legal driving vision and i passed that. but i don't see WELL at a distance. see great to read though.

It was especially nice, after Whacking the Hillary!ous mole on the social medicne, that he basically dumped the foreign policy problems squarely in Billzebubs lap....

I cut out in the middle of class(Poli Sci no less..), to catch it....

Dig This....

On the Korean Peninsula, an oppressive regime rules a people living in fear and starvation. Throughout the 1990s, the United States relied on a negotiated framework to keep North Korea from gaining nuclear weapons. We now know that that regime was deceiving the world, and developing those weapons all along.

The United Nations concluded in 1999 that Saddam Hussein had biological weapons sufficient to produce over 25,000 liters of anthrax -- enough doses to kill several million people. He hasn't accounted for that material. He's given no evidence that he has destroyed it.

From three Iraqi defectors we know that Iraq, in the late 1990s, had several mobile biological weapons labs. These are designed to produce germ warfare agents, and can be moved from place to a place to evade inspectors. Saddam Hussein has not disclosed these facilities. He's given no evidence that he has destroyed them.

The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed in the 1990s that Saddam Hussein had an advanced nuclear weapons development program, had a design for a nuclear weapon and was working on five different methods of enriching uranium for a bomb.
