My conservative daughter who is lead singer for Sixpence None the Richer (help!!!)

I have visited this over the last 5 years on a daily basis and look to it as my main source of information, these days. My daughter is Leigh Nash lead singer for an incredibly successful, cutting-edge band that crossed over from Christian music to mainstream music. She is very conservative and the band has turned down some Democratic functions. They last played at the Gov. Rick Perry's (Texas) inaguration along with Robert Earl Keen and Clay Walker. Their music is very deep and spirtual based upon the works of C.S. Lewis, Thomas Merton, and occasionally a Socialist such as Pedro Neruda (forgive them please, for their naivate as they are all under 30). However, my daugher has many opportunities and is quite willing to express the conservative view point as she has been interviewed by David Letterman - where she changed the subject to a discussion of C.S. Lewis and the derivation of the name of the band. A simply incredible moment that I will never forget. The band has an huge fan base of people of various ilks, etc.; however, they also are targeted as are other "Christian bands" and even more so due to their high profile as having had a number one hit (Kiss Me)and a new album (44 out of 39 reviews on amazon.com are 5 stars)with unworldly lyrics that are so timely. From time to time, I would like to solicit your suggestions on certain topics with an effort to make the comments concise so that they can work for Leigh in her opportunities for sound bites, etc. The band was on Jay Leno a couple of months ago and will be on David Letterman this March.

I'll take you up on that! I'm probably going anyway, and this will establish your bona fides with me personally, even if maybe nobody else

Great!

Accountability is in play here. So KA will go to the show and get comps tix from the lead singer's Dad.

Kelly, please remember to ping don-o off that concert. If the formerfatboy is legit, and does comp you, AND also get backstage passes, and meeting the band, AND you talk with his so called daughter, then I will recant, apologize and send JR One Hundred Dollars American.

Wht's the dateof the show?

I live in Gainesville, FL, where we have a lot of band activity.

Weren't Paul Revere and the Raiders from Gainseville?

I think you might have opened up a Panora's Box by mentioning that your daughter is lead singer in that band. What will happen is that you will be sent tons of songs by folks here on this forum in the hopes that your daughter's band will perform them. Personally I think taking advantage of your appearance here is rude. BTW, I have written two funny songs written that your daughter's band want to consider: Drugstore Cowboy and The Suing of Dan McGrew.

Oh, and I also wrote a dirty version of Big Bad John that would be too risque for your daughter's band but maybe you know one of the producers about the upcoming biopic of John Holmes where they could use it.

So remember, folks, don't annoy formershyfatboy with your song lyrics.

I'm A Drugstore Cowboy,
And Mighty Mean
I Wear Cowboy Boots
And Designer Jeans

I go where Men are Tough
And None are Meek,
I buy my Gear
At the Cowboy Boutique

etc. etc. etc.

I read all of the replies to formershyfatboy and you seemed to be the most ill informed, ill tempered of the lot.

First of all fsfb is legit. I have known him for 11+ years and he is Leigh Nash's father. You are mistaken. The La's did not put Sixpence on the map. Actually, that cover song was their second hit. The first hit was "Kiss Me" and contrary to your Brit husband's poor memory,"Kiss Me" was not written by a UK band. The song was written by Matt Slocum, of Sixpence, who is a respected musician and song writer in the industry. And, Leigh began her career at the young age of 15. This was with the blessing of her Christian parents who know how special she is. Try to find some time to listen to the latest CD, "Divine Discontent".

Why are you so angry? I think your "moniker", "I love my husband" says it all. Do you have the bumper sticker too? My theory is people who have to advertise that they "love their husband" have some real issues going on. Sorry.

This thread is flipped. I'm not sure it ought have gone that way, but neither am I sure you oughtn't have expected it.

For the record, I've never heard of Leigh Nash or Sixpence None the Richer. As such, and with no problems with songs about Christ or heroin, other than that it be good music, I've heard and mostly enjoyed them all, perhaps it's time for a reply to the original question posed: what suggestions to assist her to assert her conservatism and "make the comments concise so that they can work for Leigh in her opportunities for sound bites, etc."

I'm amused by the reference to "Pedro Neruda," as Pablo's Momma would probably take offense. He's a great poet, and, yes, a bloody commie. Fear not, for many great artists are entirely capable in words and utter failures in politics. Shall we call Ronald Reagan the leading exception? I do know that to condemn an artist for his/her politics is no condemnation of the art. I'd rather good politics, but it does not always follow good politics, and vice versa. We must be able to discern and appreciate the difference between the two.

My first question is whether the desired message is "Christian" or "conservative." The two cross, but ought never, ever coincide. If you're looking for advice on God, I'll pass. I'll admit that with God, I'm a failure. To his image I've made an ugly example, and to his word I'm only a negative example (I can't claim all ten Commandments, but I won't deny I'm a failure with one or two...).

If we're talking politics, then Nicollo has a word. My misspelled screen name-sake is a good starting point. Niccolo Machiavelli taught us that first principles must be upheld. Present success, Niccolo said, follows adherence to ancient success. That is, what has worked in the past also works today. This is Conservatism at its fundamental value, Yogi Berra's "if it ain't broke, don't change it."

If Machiavelli don't resonate (send your daughter first to "Machiavelli in Hell" by Sebastian di Grazia, the to the master himself with "The Prince," and "Discourses"), then try Edmond Burke's "Reflections on the French Revolution." Burke upheld Machiavelli's triumph that what worked in the past mustn't be abandoned for change's sake. This is a fundamental document and a must read.

Then, send her off to the American founding. There is no greater statement of human nature and organization than in the Declaration of Independence. From there, the Federalist Papers, the Constitution itself, Payne, and others, say it all. De Tocqueville's "Democracy in America" is an enduring statement of the meaning of our nation. Read it. One must also land upon Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural to know what is right and bold and amazing in America.

For a contemporary statement please see G.W. Bush's inaugural address. It is a powerful, magnificent statement of the American expiriment, which his speech tonight upheld.

If that fails, or if it's too much for a rock star to digest, when the band next plays Washington, DC, old Nicollo will give them a tour of the city that will teach reverance and love for this nation like they've never heard. You ought join. I've converted communists (literally, a student of Gabrial Garcia Marquez I relearned life, and I've taught many a stupid European the meaning of America in front of the U.S. Capitol).

I'd be glad to expand on any of the above.

My daughter is 13 and she is perfect. I've taught her my political philosophy, and she gets it. Today, her civics teacher asked the class why Senators must be older than Congressmen and why they have a greater individual responsibility. She was the only one to raise a hand. Her reply was exact: "they have a greater responsibility." Her teacher asked her to clarify. "There are two per State." "Damn, baby, you're right on!" I told her.

My baby is gorgeous and dangerous. I don't know that she'll be a rock star, but I do know that she'll ever be capable to express her politics to Jay Leno in consise, precise, and damning form.

Good luck!

We were not forgiven as Christians so that we would continue to sin, in this case, you telling people to “not get their panties in a bunch” and “screw you.” We are forgiven so that we won’t sin anymore, but love God to our fullest AND also through loving Him, love our neighbors/friends and treating them with kindness. Don’t use God’s forgiveness as a license to be rude.

I didn’t know they were a Christian band, especially singing songs like “kiss me” and “There she goes again”
