ROTK Movie Spoilers - don't read if you don't wanna know
Message:

Hi all -

What follows are spoilers both for the film and the story, so don’t read on if you don’t want to know.

I have a friend who works in publishing who’s seen an advance text for TROTK photo guide (sadly, all the photos themselves are embargoed). But it contains  a rudimentary plot summary, which gives away some tantalising tidbits.

Okay, a few spoilers follow (minor, admittedly!).

1. Instead of a special arrow summoning Rohan, this is achieved when Pippin is sent by Gandalf to light the tower’s beacon; this is seen from afar by Aragorn.

2. Arwen’s role becomes slightly odd; she falls ‘ill’ (reasons are not given) but this is presumably the ‘dying of a broken heart’ that elves are prone to. Apparently only Sauron’s fall can reverse this fatal affliction, as she waits in Rivendell to see what Aragorn’s fate will be. (Well, I guess it keeps her in the picture!)

3. Elrond does indeed order Narsil reforged, and takes the sword to Aragorn personally, telling him how it can help him summon the Dead Army.

4. The Dead Army (as some have predicted correctly) does not seem to be involved in defeating the Corsairs – instead Aragorn takes them directly to Minas Tirith where they overrun the invaders and save the city. A logical simplification.

5. Eowyn/Dernhelm seems to run exactly as in the book, with the only difference being that Merry knows who s/he is all along, but keeps quiet!

6. It is Pippin not Gandalf who pushes Faramir off the pyre; Gandalf attempts to save Denethor but is too late.

All in all, the storyline seems to cleave extremely closely to the book, with perhaps the least chopping around of all the three films. So three cheers for that!

Hey, I like that touch. JRRT would have, too.

Re: Arwen falling ill.

This makes sense in context--she's in a powerful conflict.

Only ~two weeks til the DVD comes out!

Yeah, had a peek at this last night Hair and decided it might be too spoilerific, but now I see it here....what the heck....

Sounds great! I like these changes, and I really like "All in all, the storyline seems to cleave extremely closely to the book, with perhaps the least chopping around of all the three films."

WOO HOO!
