Lord of the Rings:
Return of the King!
Pictures, spy reports and spoilers thread (ongoing)

Countdown to December!

Larger version of above image here

Beyond this point there be spoilers!

Like spoilers? – Keep reading!

Don't want spoilers? – Click HERE and don't look back!

Don't say we didn't warn you! Spoilers are what this thread is all about. So bring your rumors (substantiated or not!), spoilers, spy reports, and bones of contention about them here as the snippets of RoTK news, photos and interviews come rolling in.

I wouldn't even recommend pinging people to this thread unless you know they want to see them. There are a lot of purists out there that hate to have anything given away before the movie comes out. I, however, am not one of those.

I will start a "RoTK spoilers ping list" separate from the other Tolkien ping lists… so let me know if you want to be on the spoiler alert list!" If we use this thread for that kind of stuff, we won't shock people who don't want to see it. (though I bet they look anyway!)

Report 'em if you got 'em!

One tip….. Don't embed images from TORN (TheOneRing.Net) on this thread. If possible, load the image to another server, or just post a link to the TORN page. TORN's servers are powered by fleas I think, and are horrendously slow, particularly when they have something that is particularly good!

Yes it is, a fun ride. lol Well, did the question of the Sam shirt picture ever get answered? If not, when I was watching the EE over the weekend I noticed it might have come from the scene of a lament for Gandalf, when he recites his poem for the fireworks.

Nothing definitive was decided about the shirt, and yes, could be from that scene!

Hey, wonder if that was Aragorn against the Mouth of Sauron, rather than Sauron himself!

Snippet from this article about Billy Boyd at TORN:

The Glasgow-based actor hasn't had much downtime lately and in May, he and the rest of the LOTR cast will head back to New Zealand to film pick-up shots for the trilogy's last installment, The Return of the King.

Boyd has seen part of a rough cut of Return and says the new film is by far the best.

"I don't think people have any idea - it's incredible," says Boyd, who still keeps in touch with his co-stars, including Sean Astin, Orlando Bloom and John Rhys-Davies.

"We've started with the best source material and then the script they wrote is probably the best screenplay I've ever read."

"I was nearly in tears just reading the screenplay. It was so emotional.

On top of that, people already know the character and have been on journeys with all these guys. This is sort of the end of all those stories. It's just got so much going for it before (Jackson) adds the special touches."

Boyd was disappointed that Jackson was snubbed in the best director category at this year's Academy Awards and says it would be a "travesty" if he is overlooked next year.

"What he has done, no director has ever done," Boyd says emphatically.

I guess the news here is that the rough cut is missing enough that the entire cast is going down to NZ for pickups this spring! Egads!

Why are we being tortured with small pathetic articles that don't say anyhting?

I heard (from TOR.N) that Daniel Reeve, A calligrapher for LOTR, had to teach Elijah how to write right, so myabe PJ will put the book writing part in.
With Frodo writing it, or he would have just wrote it him self.
Well anyway heres the link, http://www.theonering.net/perl/newsview/2/1047944378

Elf Archer, it is really funny that you posted about that small article about the caligraphy (ALL, see post above) Because here is a pic that goes along with it....

But it's the only news we got! - What a dry spell!

Spoiler alert!

Larger picture here... Frodo and the Red Book?

Very weird because I read that article weeks ago, and just posted it.

Frodo's turning into a bedhead just like bilbo.

Really 264 days?
That's just terrible.

McKellen Asks Jackson for Hobbit Adaptation

And Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is given a major literary nod.

Sir Ian is reluctant to give up the robes and pointy blue hat. In fact, he's pushing for a serial version of The Hobbit to be made once the trilogy is finished. Jackson and the other LOTR writers have cited the long, meandering storyline of The Hobbit as a supreme challenge for a film, which is why McKellen thinks television is an appropriate medium. "I want to play Gandalf again, in The Hobbit. I've asked Peter Jackson if he'll produce the prequel as a huge, yearlong television series. All those different strands to the story seem perfect for TV, and we'd do every scene of it. It could be marvelous."

Minor news:
ROTK Reshoots, and King Kong Casting
Tehanu @ 3:17 am EST
Chris writes: New Zealand TV Guide had an article on the reshoots for ROTK. According to them they have it on good authority that it will be at the start of May and Viggo Mortneson let it slip in a recent interview that Sean Bean was coming back to do flashback scenes for the upcoming third film.

King Kong News:

Jess heard on the radio in NZ that "Peter Jackson is looking for tall, hairy folk. I guess that they are tall means he can't cast himself! LOL!!!"

More Minor news!

Where ROTK Follows the Book.
Tehanu @ 8:36 pm EST
Jess sends in this quote from the Australian Empire magazine:
'Destined to be even more incident-packed than The Two Towers, The Return of the King will see Frodo and Sam battle the giant CGI spider Shelob and Aragorn travel the Paths of the Dead in an attempt to forge an army capable of vanquishing Sauron's hordes. And as Andy Serkis reveals, the third film will provide audiences with a chance to see how Smeagol became Gollum.

"You see me on-screen transformed into Gollum once he kills his best mate Deagol," enthuses the actor. "You see this whole descent into madness."'

A spoiler perhaps worth a ping! (also see the other minor reports recently above, if you haven't seen them.

Spoiler alert!

Makoare Talks ROTK/The Hobbit
Xoanon @ 12:17 pm EST

Amy writes:

Today at the Armageddon Expo in Auckland Lawrence Makoare jumped up on stage for a bit of an impromptu chat during the Weta/Sideshow discussion panel.

Not sure if you already knew, but he mentioned that he and Miranda Otto were returning in May to reshoot the entire Witch King sequence, as apparently PJ decided his armor looked altogether too similar to Sauron's. [news to me that this actor is also playing the witch-king (he is the guy who played Lurtz ~Hair)] Lawrence didn't mention the inclusion of Merry here, but HOPEFULLY this was just an oversight on his part...eek!

He also revealed he has a very strong hunch that PJ will make The Hobbit, and the guy from Weta expressed extreme glee at the prospect of designing a dragon.

Have purchased "Art of the Two Towers" despite bad reviews. It is certainly not as good as "Art of Fellowship of the Ring" but it is still pretty good--especially if you have an interest in costuming. Many sketches of costumes.
