what kind of computer should I buy?

I need a new computer and hear conflicting things about different brands. Can anyone recommend one or tell me why not to buy a particular brand?

I also want to know if an intel celeron? is the same as a pentium 4

Build your own AMD Athlon machine. They rock and are cheap.

I did this, plus I have a Dell laptop and 2 cheap Emachines for the kids.

The Athlon Tbird runs like greased lightning. It takes a couple of hours to build one, and you have a great feeling of accomplishment about what is inside the box.

If you're just doing internet & email and limited other stuff, those cheap E-machines fit the bill fine.

Doesn't WalMart.com sell "e-machines" for merely $498 now?

*model #W1500
*desktop p.c. with a 15 inch monitor screen
*AMD processor, 1.6 speed (which seems really fast for this kind of price);
*49 Gigabyte Hard Drive
*Apparently NO DVDs are available but you can make CD ROM's
*128 megabytes memory
*56 K modem
*Windows XP operating system; Mcafee antivirus
*Guarantees: 15 days with receipt for return or exchange; there's also a manufacturer's warranty which lasts for a year or more.

Or should one buy merely from Best Buy or CompUSA or Amazon.com? It's the $498 price that caught my eye though...

A specification of 300 MHZ with MMX is a really old, slow machine, circa 1997, so you will not have any trouble meeting that minimum requirement with any chip (Celeron, Pentium 3, Pentium 4, Athlon).

Any modern AMD Athlon XP chip or any modern Intel chip will do fine for your Nokia application.

How much money do you have to spend on this project?

In order to answer your question, I would 1st need to know what you want to do with your computer. Play games and surf the net? Print stylish color graphics or just run office apps?

I use a Celeron 1.3 gig CPU and use my machine primarily as a digital audio workstation and I have ZERO problems. For basic computering without leaning heavily toward multimedia For the $$$ you can't beat an Athlon system. Just be sure not to buy a sound blaster sound card to stick in it and you will love your system.

If you don't know enough about computers to already know what you want...you need a Mac.

Just got my hands on a New Dell 8250 and it is so nice to the old beast i had. No complaints yet....

I wish I had known that they support the gun grabbers, I would have not gotten it from them. I liked the new SDRAM 1066 bus speed, very fast with 512 Megs in ram, it loads and runs fast.

As little as possible. I wanted to stay around under 500. I've got everything like monitor, keyboard and stuff like that.

Agreed.  I don't work for these guys, but suggest you take a look at this from Best Buy.  It should work fine for you.

After asking at COMPUSA about an addon to "Blood 2", I was told by a salesman, "We don't sell games with guns or violence."
Shocked, I then said, "OK. I'll be back. I went to the game racks and pulled out three games and walked back to the salesman saying, "This game lets you remove a head with a .44 magnum (Resident Evil), and this game lets you staple someone's head to a wall (Aliens Versus Predator), and THIS game lets you open up with concussion grenades to take out small crowds. Now, you were saying?"
I don't go there anymore.

Dell is anti-gun. Don't buy a Dell. I recommend Alienware, Pacific Northwest, and ABS.

Here's my letter to Michael Dell:

February 28, 2002 Michael Dell
Chief Executive Officer
Dell Computer Corporation
One Dell Way
Round Rock, Texas 78682

Dear Mr. Dell:

I am writing to you about the recent issue between Dell and Jack Weigand of Weigand Combat Handguns. I have been a loyal Dell user for many years, and have recommended your firm to many colleagues and clients.

I am also a Life Member of the NRA and a shooter. And I support the Second Amendment of the Constitution.

I am writing to express my outrage over Dell’s treatment of Mr. Weigand—and by extension, all law-abiding gun owners. I have followed the story closely and I know the sequence of events. I know Dell has stated that the word, “Combat” in his firm’s name caused his order to be cancelled.

It is not Dell’s job to determine who is a criminal—or potential criminal—and who is “legitimate”. Mr. Weigand is—by all accounts—a law-abiding citizen, a person of integrity, and a businessman whose business serves those of us who cherish the right to keep and bear arms. Suppose I opened a business named “Jihad Child Care.” (I’m Jewish!) Would Dell deny me the ability to purchase one of your computers?

The bottom line is: Dell has lost me a customer—and I will no longer recommend your products to those who seek my assistance in choosing a PC. And I will do everything in my power to spread the story of your shameful treatment of Mr. Weigand to the many gun owners I know.

Sincerely,

Noris Life Member, NRA
Member, Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership
Member, Citizen’s Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
Member, Gun Owners of California
Member, California Rifle and Pistol Association
