McAwful and the toons control the purse strings at the DNC? My only other explanation is the dems are way stooooopid.

Honey, it's the money. The Clintons control the big donors. The dems are major in the hole for algore's campaign. Whoever goes forward as the pres candidate for their party will need tons of cash. tons. The Clintons control the money therefore the Clintons control the Party. Simple as that.

How do they control the money? The dems want to win above all else and they know the 'beaste is their very best shot - they know the Clinton machine is ruthless, efficient, experienced - they know it can win. So they throw their money to whomever the Clintons ask them to in the hopes that in '08, they will be rewarded w/another Clinton in the White House. Along with that will come all kinds of "favors" back to these donors. Plus, the donors can pat themselves on the back for having enabled the leftist wacko agenda to be served up for all of us to eat once again.
