Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Of course I seem to remember you gettin' all elfy on us during the last Elfbash...You dished out a couple of good hits on Gondor as I recall. But that's why I like being a guy, we can whomp on each other pretty good and still be friends afterwards.
You ever see The Quiet Man? I love the fight John Wayne has with his Brother-in-Law and then they stagger to Wayne's house best friends after nearly killing each other.

All in all, not a bad philosophy:
Peter: I won't grow up.
Boys: I won't grow up.
Peter: I don't want to wear a tie.
Boys: I don't want to wear a tie.
Peter: And a serious expression,
Boys: And a serious expression,
Peter: In the middle of July.
Boys: In the middle of July.
Peter: And if it means I must prepare To shoulder burdens with a worried air,
All: I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up!
Peter: Not me!
John: Not I!
All: Not me!
Peter: So there!

JM Barrie's brother was the mother's favorite. So when the brother drowned, the mother sank into melancholia forever. JM tried getting attention from her by doing things like dressing in his dead brothers clothes, etc. Mom would be all happy on seeing him, but as soon as she realized it was just JM, and not the brother come back to life, she would be terribly disappointed and say something like "Oh, it's just you, how sad." The whole thing stressed out JM Barrie so much that he never grew up, not even physically.
So it seems really creepy to me that he wrote a children's book in which the characters would never grow up...didn't they live in "Never Never Land?"
Learned this from my daughter who learned it in college, there is some name for the affliction. We could hardly believe it, but a quick net search confirmed it.

But that's why I like being a guy, we can whomp on each other pretty good and still be friends afterwards. I don't recall ever saying that I liked you...;-)
Sheesh! We were out to dinner with my wife's sister and her husband last week. My wife was telling us about how Jr. is being bugged by some kids on the bus. Typical middle school boy stuff, but Jr. is not very good at the smart@$$ comebacks (I keep trying to coach him, but he won't listen to me).
So my wife says "I think I'll just stop by those boys' house and have a talk with their mother..."
Yikes! She got an earful from the three of us! That is NOT the way to handled middle-school boys and their fights. Sure enough, next day, all is well...
I don't remember seeing The Quiet Man, but John Wayne has a similar relationship with Lee Marvin in Donovan's Reef (one of my other favorites)

What a terribly tragic story!
Makes me wish I was around back then to hug him and tell him he was just fine!

Boy, I can relate to that. In middle school, my sister and I were teased mercilessly. We were called the Snot Sisters.
I was a really big nerd, coke bottle glasses, nerdy clothes, the whole bit (no pocket protector though). My sister had big braces.
We struggled for years (through many tears) and finally we decided one summer that we had had enough. We got contact lenses, begged our parents to update our wardrobe a bit and got nice haircuts. It took some time, but after a while the name calling stopped.
I acheived my ultimate "coolness" in high school where I was known for my ability to get straight A's, despite my affiliation with the "headbanger" crowd. I had friends in every circle - book nerds, jocks, "popular" girls, band "geeks", punk rockers, not to mention, faculty and staff.
Let Jr know that his day will come and that I don't even see, let alone speak, to those jerks that teased me anymore. They made absolutely ZERO difference in the way my life has turned out.

I was a like you... Hung out with the rockers and the punk rockers, but was also in the band, was in track, and took classes like Physics and Calculus.
Have you seen the pictures of me backstage at Judas Priest? ;~D
SEAN ASTIN'S MOVIE HEREIt's really cute! I could read the credits properly because I had to watch it on low speed here at work, but I saw that the story was by Sean & Dom and I thought I saw Elijah Wood under 1st Asst. Director. Couldn't read it well for any other familiar name. And of course, Jackson's cameo at the end lol.

I recognize the little lady short person as one of the size doubles, and the middle guy is with Weta or something, I will look to recognize him the next time I watch the features on the DVD.

I knew you smoked! I could smell it on the cookies!
I remember the first batch of cookies I got from you last year...I thought "Ha! Hair smokes!"
Didn't take away from my enjoyment of the cookies though! No, not at all.
