Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Rosie, you get some common, pretty well-known tunes together that even the newbies ought to be able to play with practice. Maybe find them online? Then everyone who plays an instrument can look up and learn their piece!
Corin, I would love to hear you play along on the piano! Won't someone have a guitar?
To: Overtaxed
Hi Rosie! How did the audition/practice go?Pretty well, I think! I didn't know most of their songs and I'm kicking myself for not bringing some sort of recording device, but I was able to at least doodle in the proper key to do some fills and chords. I'm not sure where it'll go from there, but I think they'll invite me to another practice soon.

I played saxophone in school, but gave it up about half-way through high school. Tried to pick it back up in college for stage band, but didn't.
I mostly sing in the choir. With 150 people in the choir and some pretty incredible singers, I don't worry that I'm WAAAAAAY down on the soloist list.
But I'd like to play the piano much more often, and much more better than I do.
To: 2Jedismom
Corin, I would love to hear you play along on the piano! So would Mrs. Allen (God rest her soul), my first piano teacher and Professor Faber, my college piano professor. I got little sympathy from him for not having practiced. His family fled the Netherlands during WWII. He used to practice playing the pipe organ in cathedrals. It was so cold he'd wear gloves with the fingers cut out.
I haven't played "publicly" since my last recital...

Lunchtime!!!
I've prepared two pots of hearty beef and vegetable stew to drive the chill from my dear Hole dwellers' bones. 6 loaves of freshly baked French bread are steaming on the sideboard with plenty of butter in those little bowls next to them!
For the main dish, I've got 5 roasted hens, a huge pot roast and 3 boneless pork loin roasts as well. Plenty for all! Mushrooms, sauteed in red wine are in the covered crockpot on the table. Corn on the cob, fresh garden salad (choice of dressings) and mashed potatoes with gravy for side dishes.
And for dessert, 3 apple pies, 2 blueberry pies, 2 strawberry shortcakes, 2 plans of chocolate fudge and 4 pans of brownies (2 with walnuts, 2 without). Ice cream is available as well! ENJOY!!!

Then everyone who plays an instrument can look up and learn their piece! I'll look into that tonight. My list may be a bit biased, though...there are lots of tunes I know and love, but I don't know how common they are in the "real world". I would say "Swallowtail Jig" for sure, though, as a good first piece. And I'll find some good slow airs, too.

but I think they'll invite me to another practice soon. They should! How are they going to make a proper decision just from doodling? They need to hear something that you know already.

I've seen that before. Would it go well with my orange lights and green icicle lights?
To: ksen
LOL!! That is cute. Much cuter than the "vomiting pumpkin" I once saw.

How are they going to make a proper decision just from doodling? Welll...yeah, it was a little bit frustrating. I'm pretty good at straight tune playing, but not so good at backup or improvising, so it was immediately jumping into an area that I'm not so hot at, with the additional problem of not knowing the material. I should have brought a recorder! How dumb was that??
Still, I think I did pretty well.

I can always count on you to keep me from the headache of packing up leftovers that no one wants later on. :)
