The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Oh....seems like being out of the loop is the order of the day. I've already been handed a form to fill out but I don't have the codes I need to fill in. Then some invoices were returned needing more codes that I don't have. So I'm basically clueless today - more so than usual. :)

Morning, everyone!
Sorry so late in checking in, have been fighting with my stupid PC at work. We have machines of every stripe here- SGI, Linux, Mac, PC- and the only ones that won't play nice with others on the network are the blooming PCs! Grrrrrrrr!!!!! The only OS not onboard for cross-platform compatibility is...the PC! Makes my blood boil having to jump through so many blasted hoops just to make something work on the nasty machine.
Anyhoo, it's a beautiful day here otherwise and I hope all is well with you and yours.

Don't get me wrong, I love computers. I love them as a creative outlet. I write, listen to music, design quilts, draw or edit pictures, make movies- I love them. The problem is that I expect them to work. Which is why I hate Windoze machines. Give me a UNIX box or a Mac any day.

Give me a UNIX box So....what do you think about Linux OS's? I've been thinking about switching and I'm wondering what I would be letting myself in for. :)

Hullo everyone!
Hair, I do hope you are feeling a bit better this morning. I wish I could offer you more than virtual chicken soup, but alas, you are across the nation from me! :)
2J - Andes Mints as a stop smoking tool, huh? Sounds promising! Maybe I'll try it. Any excuse to eat chocolate will do!
Corin - Thin Mints are grand! I'm also a big fan of mint chocolate chip ice cream, yet I am the only one in my family that digs it so I rarely buy a half gallon of the stuff. I'd be the only one eating it and that's NOT a good way to lose weight! LOL!!
g'nad - Yeah, I know about the Girl Scouts and their hidden agendas. It stinks that the leftists have hijacked such a wonderful group! :(
OK folks, breakfast is ready. I've sliced up another fresh fruit salad for the dieting Hole Dwellers, along with some Special K cereal and 2% milk for those of us that just don't fill up on fruit! There's a pot of fresh chicken soup with plenty of veggies, noodles and big chunks of chicken on the stove. It's mostly for Hair, so don't get greedy until she's had her fill please. :)
For the rest, fried eggs and grits, along with plenty of bacon strips and sausage patties. I've made a bit of sausage gravy to go with the buttermilk biscuits. Hash browns are on the hot plate and the juices are in the icebox where they always are! And, of course, coffee is ready - VERY strong today, be forewarned!!!
I've got to go to the dentist again today to get a couple of small soft spots (wanna-be cavaties someday) sealed with those new white fillings. Not too happy about it since I like to brag about not having any fillings. Hmmmm....if they're white, who can really tell? LOL!!

Honestly, Linix is a headache. Unless you really know your Unix variants you're in for a nightmare. Interestingly, Mac is making a stealth run at the Unix market. The new OS X is bsd Unix with the yummy Mac gui over the top. You can talk to the computer via command line -or- click through the gui. Compiling Unix apps for the Mac is such a breeze that my branch in ARL is seriously considering replacing the PCs and probably our SGIs with Mac boxes. We have several we're putting through the paces, and let me tell you our SysAdmins and die-hard Unix geeks are droooooooooling over them.

Well....so much for that idea. I have a couple of spare HD's in my PC and I thought I might try running Linux on one of them. I am not buying a Mac. :)
