The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Obviously PJ is waiting until RoTK to introduce the reforged Narsil. I don't know why because it was Narsil that opened the door for Aragorn with Eomer, so I would have thought that it would have been important to have Narsil in TTT.

I believe PJ may be using the introduction of Narsil as a way to bring Arwen back into the storyline if he has her deliver it to Aragorn.

I'm not sure, but I think that Arwen sends Anduril to him in RoTK. I don't know if she will accompany the sword though.

Meddlesome elf that she is! ;)

...She's probably sensed Eowyn sniffing around her man and will have to show up and make it obvious that he is taken.

Let me know please!

Have a safe trip. I'll probably see it while you are away because my free pass expires December 31st. But that doesn't mean I won't see it again and again and again and again. :)

I noticed that. It's fun for me. I worked with mostly men for years and years, consequently many of my best friends are men. But, sometimes girl talk is irksome to them. I have to keep that in mind. Although, about this time last year, they were all hearing of how pleasant to look upon Aragorn and Legolas were.

My 17 year old daughter was fond of the look of Haldir. She hasn't seen the film yet. (She's in the midst of one of those teen spells where I know nothing and all I say is repulsive.) This should end within a day or 2 - usually does. Anyway, I didn't tell her about Haldir's death. She questioned me about the movie at 6 AM Wednesday. I declined to comment because I didn't want to ruin the show for her.

But, you notice, she talks nice to me when there's something she wants. It's that Smeagol/Gollum phase she's going through.

In the SE, Narsil is brought up. Elrond tells Aragron that the skill of the elves can reforge Narsil. Aragorn tells him no because he doesn't want the responsiblity of being king.

Now, in interviews, PJ said that Aragorn doesn't carry it around because the first time the audience would have seen it would have been at the Prancing Pony when Sam, Merry, and Pippin burst through the door and Aragorn draws his sword. PJ said that he believed it would have been an unintentional laugh for the audience. How silly for this ranger to draw a broken sword. Yes, the Tolkienites would have understood, but those who have never read the books would not have. And PJ has to make the movie for them too.

Hope this explanation helps.

---"I wonder when they'll call the men in the white coats to take me away once and for all."

I've been kind of thinking along those lines since my move.
I think the new people in the new place definitely had a different idea of who and what they were hiring on here. hehehehehe. There have been no complaints, but they keep talking about what a quiet place this was before. And how there never was much going on. And the weird thing is... that's how I was describe the place now. Kind of like a tomb. Nobody talks much or goof around. And nobody has any unique little obsessions to flaunt and entertain us with - except me of course.

I know, but if you met some of her boyfriends you wouldn't be so shocked. She dated one guy when we first moved up here that I swear looked like R2D2.

Well done Corin! - Good letter! I agree. A reviewer should know better. Even on MSNBC just now, they had a little blonde on, (Bless her heart, she needs to have her roots done!) and she said, "It isn't my cup of tea, but fans of this stuff are lining up in droves, and turned it over to the anchor-chick who is a fan.

That reasoning makes sense from the film standpoint. I figured that Narsil was one of those things that there wasn't time to fit in the film - except of course the briefest of references. It is however, a great vehicle for establishing the identity and birthright of Aragorn.

Unfortunately, I also think that a lot of people who wouldn't read the books are also a little lacking in the concept of what a birthright is. Not everyone of course, don't want to be that general. But, in our culture, birthright isn't exactly a commonplace item of discussion.

(I'm sorry Mom, uh, and kids, I couldn't get your Christmas shopping done this year, and there will be no cookies and cakes. But, I'll be making a donation to the needy in your name. Have you seen the TTT yet though? Wanna go?)

I am thinking of trying that tactic too, if my shopping this morning doesn't work out.
